Well, funny enough, before I realized that there was a Sonic announcement today, I was planning on writing up a bit about the 3D Classic version for a review. I've been playing it here and there over the past week and it's been quite interesting. Yes, I've played the game many times and know it very well, but it's been quite a while since I've done so and my memories on it aren't quite as fresh as I believed them to be. What's been quite startling is the lack of speed in the very first game and its strong focus on platforming.

It's definitely no precision platformer a la Super Mario Bros., but it's not really about speeding through the levels like a bat out of hell either. Of course, the sense of speed really picked up in 2 and 3, but it's funny when I hear people took about Sonic being a game about being fast when in fact the original is not. It's this false perception, I believe, that has skewed all of his forays into 3D and made most of his latest adventures the disappointments they were. By and large, I don't think everyone knows what they're really nostalgic for with Sonic.

In any event, I have enjoyed the original game for what it is. The gameplay itself was certainly interesting in its heyday, nowadays it's still serviceable, just nothing too special. I do still enjoy the worlds quite a bit as they are brimming with character, and of course, I'll always have a soft spot for the tunes. Still not sure what else to say about it that hasn't been said in my other 3D Classics reviews, but I'll have something out there for you guys soon.

Today's thread, in keeping with the Sonic theme, is about the new announcement. Feel free to hop on over, check out the embedded trailer, and comment on your thoughts about the developers of the Wii U and 3DS versions of the upcoming title(s).

yeah you're right about Sonic.  That's what I enjoyed about them too, since I like platformers.  That's kind of been missing since they went 3D, good platforming.

I played the first Sonic a while back and was shocked at how slow it was. I could play Sonic 2 all day long though. It improves upon the original in so many ways.

I'm probably one of the worst people to ask what do about Sonic. Sonic Adventure 2 is one of my favorite Sonics right behind Sonic 2 and Sonic and Knuckles. At the same time, the 3D Sonics have become super repetitive with their themes and characters.

I honestly like the first Sonic a lot and do in fact think the new 3D ones should focus on speed. That's what I liked about the Adventure games (not his damn friends).

None of this is nostalgia-based, really. I never owned any Sega consoles, and owned SA 2:Battle after it had been out for a while. I played the first Sonic online not two years ago for the first time as well as its sequels.

As for the new design, I like what I saw on Vice's Assistant's blog.

Funny that you and I did Sonic related things without even realizing there was an announcement. I just downloaded the Generations demo on Steam before reading VA's blog.

I think boom looks really good, Another reason for me to get a Wii U.

I need donations to the Save the Moths Foundation. Any takers?

I haven't seen the trailer, but i've seen the designs. Except for Knuckles (it's like ham chested Chris Redfield all over again), I think Sonic, Tails and Amy look fine.

The thing about Sonic is that I think the franchise is alive (as someone who loves Colors and can't wait to play Generations and Lost World), but it's been in a limbo of opinions, with no one having a decisive opinion on his state, with some saying he's alive and kicking and others thinking that he's dead.

Sonic is a very touchy subject man.

I played and really enjoyed Sonic Colors but I've fallen behind since then. I want to play Generations and Lost World but I don't have them Frown This looks cool though.

As for the whole speed thing, I thought they went overboard with Sonic Rush (and presumably its sequels). The levels were all built over bottomless pits and I'd go flying off into the abyss all the time. Not fun. I do have a soft spot for Sonic's speedy levels in Sonic Adventure 2 though. They were like crazy roller coasters.

Love the old Sonic games, the 3D games not so much. The game looks good but I don't know if it is something that I want to play on my 3DS right now.

I guess my main rememberence of the pasty Sonic titles was that enough though he wasn't as fast as one would say, the levels gave you an ability to not only go fast with very few obsticles to block you, but once your done "blazing thru" you can go back and explore more like a decent platformer.

It had a good flow instead of possible roadblocks of future titles fell over. That's what stuck to me as being faster when compared to Mario titles.
