To be honest I have not played a traditional one in quite some time. I don't think I have ever beat one. I am trying to think way back and nothing is coming to mind. But regardless I love this genre.

The sense of progression is rewarding. Going back and opening up inaccessible areas of discovered levels is adventurous to me. This genre has tight controls and usually amazing level design. Fluid levels which is reminiscent of Dark Souls. I don't really like games with central hubs but rather living breathing worlds to explore. In a traditional sense I think of these games to have platforming, action and simple rpg elements to them. I like to think of Dark Souls as a hardcore metrovania.

That being said then I have beaten one metrovania game. The fluidity of the world is something I haven't experienced since the classic 2D Metroids or the DS entries of Castlevania. Everything thing is linked and it all seems natural and just oh so good. There is a lot of backtracking involved and I don't think Dark Souls is an exception. I don't know how other people play Dark Souls but I did a whole lot of get stuck well lets go explore somewhere else and come back later.

I cannot really think of any games like it. One reason why I love Dark Souls so much. Other Metrovania games, well I can't think of any that I have played other than dipping my toes in Metroid and Castlevania games. Super Metroid is a top game on my list of games to play this year. If I can find a copy of Castlevania SOTN then I will play that. I might just buy it off XBLA soon just so I can play it.

That is all I got today. Something short. Just one of my favorite genres that even though I don't have too much experience with it, I am always looking for that type of game. It just fascinates me. Oooooo collecting items. My favorite. Until next time thanks for reading guys. Have a good one.

Dark Souls is my favourite game ever! Seriously, I've finished it like 8 times. MARCH 11!!!

Also, have you heard of a game called La Maluna? It's my favourite 2D metroidvania game. It's like Dark Souls if Dark Souls was a 2D game with heaps of cool puzzles.

DARK SOULS is up there. If not my favorite game one of them ever. I have only beaten it once but I love chipping away at it. The game means a lot for me personally and it helped me through a rough time in my life.

I have never heard of La Maluna...I'll check it out. I am always looking for some recommendations.

Same here! Did you read the article I posted on my blog? Because yeah, this came at a difficult time in my life and just absorbed me!

Yea I did happen to read it. I thought it was completely relatable to me. I was glad to see that someone else was effected by the game as much as I was. It is amazing how games in general and that one in particular can be so influential and helpful.

Now I want to keep playing Dawn of Sorrow. I actually sometimes get tired of backtracking, but I do like these games.

Backtracking can suck sometimes but if the world is really engaging then I don't mind at all.

I can get pretty frustrated at games like this at times, but when it works, I love them. The last great one I played was Monster Tale on DS. It kept the flow going the whole time and I never felt stuck. Too bad it has the most forgettable title for a game ever made -- I had to look up the name (again) to be able to write this comment.

Wow that is a really genaric game name. That is the major issue with this genre is that lull that you get during the game. These games thrive on flow. It also has to keep you engaged. I think this is one of the genres that is hardest to play, drop and try to comeback to.

I've loved games like this for a long time.  My favorite is probably Super Metroid.  The most recent ones I've played are Batman Arkham Origins:Blackgates (Vita) and Guacamelee.  I thought both were excellent games.  Dark Souls was also a great game and I'm looking forward to the second one.

FYI-Jeremey Parish (formerly of 1up) keeps a couple lists of metroidvania-type games.  I doubt he would mind me linking to them here:

Thanks for the lists. It is so hard trying to find games that are in this genre other than Metroid and Castlevania games. I heard Gucacamelee is an excellent game. Does Batman play like the console versions?

It takes alot of the elements of the console versions, but it is more similar to old-school metroidvania. The map is 3D, but the action plays out as a 2D side-scroller. (You can be walking from east to west and then enter a vent in the background, and the map will rotate and you'll be crawling through it to the north.)

There are still all the gadgets from the console games and the fighting still uses the familiar timing based button mashing.  When you find the gadgets you can go back to earlier places you have been to open up new areas, similar to suit upgrades in metroid.

If you have a Vita (I think it's on the 3DS also) and like metroidvania games I'd say it's worth a shot, especially if you also like the console Batman games.  I had alot of fun with it.
