BaD #05: What can I say, I love me some Halo!

Back in 2011 I did a brief blog about winter stages for winter seasons. I thought I’d revisit it here to help me flesh out my “Winter Games” choices for 2014 given that sadly I’ve yet to play any newer games that gave me the same feel of playing in the winter snow, though some recent commenters have suggested some titles I should try out. But for now I’ll just start off with a mix of something old and something new with my first choice. It really shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone given my love for halo (One COD friend goes as far as to say I am “Gaylo for Halo”) but this time around we get to enjoy and old classic with a fresh new coat of paint on it.

I'm sure we are all aware of this level in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. It's the level where you head to Halo's control center. As you progress to that level you happen to find yourself traveling in a winter area of the ring. I'm not sure why but whenever I play that area, I get the exact feeling of what I get when I happen to be trekking in the wilderness as a kid: Exploring uncharted territory, unknown of any dangers that might be lurking up ahead. The view and the atmosphere as the snow surrounds the tower that leads to Halo's control center. It' just feels like being out there, if not on an alien construct but at least in the cold.

But instead of playing this in its original format with Original Xbox graphics, this level now can now be played in high definition! Running around in the snow (or riding the scorpion tank) feels all the more colder given the new visuals this game sports. I know this playthrough video may not be able to fully immerse you into the feel of winter, but with a good mix of the current cold temperatures currently outside helps to bring this Winter Games choice in from the cold.

The second best level to play in the snow would be the level where you have to destroy power generators, which has you flying around in a banshee in the snow. Too bad I can’t find video of that scene though =(

One more day and that’ll make a full week of my “beard off” pictures. Here’s to tomorrow where hopefully I’ll have the time to put up a Day One and Day seven picture comparison up.

Wise BaD message of the day: Don’t eat the yellow snow. I don’t care what your friends tell you, it’s not a lemonade flavored snowcone!

I think my favorite snow level  is Phendrana Drifts from Metroid Prime, but the level you posted looks good. Definitely reminds me of Hoth, but with tanks and different snow speeder models.

One thing that's always bothered me somewhat about FPS though, is the lack of music. Phendrana Drifts is a favorite largely due to music. I dunno.

I must get back into Metroid Prime. I have it on my GC but perhaps I should go for the Wii trilogy.

Too bad I didn't have time to add another Halo snow level that has music playing as you persue the missions. that might fit the FPS music wise. another time perhaps.

Not my favorite level of Halo, but definitly one of the most memorable. Just using the tank for the first time makes you feel invinsible. The level looks great on HD too.

It is a bit of a slog but I usually like the level where I try to keep as many marines alive before the out cropping.

As for the tank. I think episode 3 of Red vs Blue fits my thoughts about this tank.

I'll have to get this game.  I hadn't played Halo in years.  Between my son & I, we have all the Halo games except Halo Anniversary and that newest game, whatever it is.

Now seems like a good time to try. Why not revisit the classics with the remake original. It'll get you read for Halo 4 when you finally get to it.

I picked up this HD remake, but I don't think that I even played it past the first level.  At the very least I should have played up to and through my favourite level of the game, The Silent Cartographer.

It's the least you could do with a new halo game. Also the co=op can be fun depending on the circustances.

I've never played Halo and I'm not very good at FPSs in general, but the game looks nice.

Might want to give it a try. even on the easy settings it's pretty tame for those not familair with them. If anything the story is good.

My buddy and I played co-op starting with the beach landing on Silent Cartographer and all the way through Assault on the Control Room every darn weekend for the three years Halo was out before Halo 2. Every inch of those levels are etched in my brain.

You must've rocked in getting those hard achievements in that level. It took me blunt force repetition to get one marine thru the beach storming on heroic setting alive.

I'm sure we did it on Heroic, maybe even Legendary, but most of the time we were on Normal just so we could dash lightning speed through it and create mega havok.

We picked up a copy of Halo Anniversary last year but still haven't played it. I've actually never played the original. Guess I'm missing something, huh?

So you've played the recent Halos but not the orginal?

We need to fix that before I take your Halo card away! =P

No, not my Halo card! O_O
