I need to watch some of these movies. Outside of a few random Shogun shows I would watch as a kid and a brief binge on Robotech as a teen, I have avoided anime. The Miyazaki stuff always looks pretty amazing, though. I have to rely on blogs like this to let me know there is anything going on in that scene, though, so thanks!

So yesterdays blog was pretty meh. Simply because I was suffering from what is known as the dreadful headache. However, things are a-ok today and I'm back to insightful (or about as insightful as I can be) blogging!
But what is the topic you ask? Well that's a very good question...And I can provide you the answer. I want to give a bit of love to anime and Hayao Miyazaki's swan song of The Wind Rises. I have grown into an anime fan from around when I was first introduced via Dragonball Z. However, I had no idea there were an anime movies until one day I happened to catch Akira on TV. And if you haven't watched Akira then certainly you are missing out on the breakthrough anime film that many fans of anime have said was what brought them into the genre.
One of my favorite anime studios has been studio Ghibli and as such Hayao Miyazaki has also gotten admiration in my film studies. Now even though Miyazaki is amazing my favorite film is not one he was apart of. Studio Ghibli's Grave of the Fireflies stands out as my favorite of their efforts. Now that doesn't mean Miyazaki is no slouch. He's made so many memorable films it's hard for me to pick just one favorite. From My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, to more recent efforts of Ponyo or The Secret World of Arrietty.
I gotta hand it to the man. He's achieved a feat not many have. He's become a relevant legend outside of Japan. Disney was so impressed by his works they localized his films for American audiences. That is saying something. His films have so many themes and characters that I could hardly take the time to list it all. It would be a very lengthy term paper of a blog if I did.
I really appreciate anime. It's an art form. the mangas that come out are epic in scale. Think of Akira Toriyama for a moment. The man made Dragonball and Dragonball Z. For those not in the know Dragonball & Z eclipsed over 200 episodes....the manga had volumes and volumes. Or even to this dayyou can still go out and buy Pokemon manga. Or Detective Conan/ Case Closed which has spanned over 500 episodes has a manga still running.
However, when The Wind Rises comes to limited theaters late February it will end a stunning 50 year or so career of Hayao Miyazaki. His son Goro has shown himself willing to take the reigns of his father in animation with directoral efforts on Tales of Earthsea and Up on Poppy Hill. But if you really need to know the impact of The Wind Rises...the trailer alone makes an impression
