Wow, amazing and sad story all in one. The SNES is the best system of all time. It has more of the "best games of all time" than any other system. Definitely outclassed Sega and the Genesis (which was a vailant effort for sure). It's my favorite system, and I will never part with it (well, maybe over my dead body).

Apoligies for the late entry. I didn't work last night, so I stayed home. Now on with the GLaD!
The Super Nintendo. Nintendo's answer to the Genesis. At a time where Sega was taking a portion of profits out of their bottom line, they decided to do something about it. They knew that the NES was being outclassed by the more powerful system, and that the time had come to make a successor that could handle more powerful games.
The system came out in 1990, and came prepackaged with another blockbuster game, Super Mario World. You could tell that the Mario team really put their hearts into this one. Everything was bigger, better, and graphically superior to anything else at the time. Thanks to it, the system became just the hit that they needed to keep the crown. I still remember the "console wars" at the time, which were reflected in the most influential media at the time, print magazines. The term "fanboy" became used for the first time to describe someone who preferred one system over another and who usually trashed anyone who didn't feel the same. I always thought that it was pretty stupid myself.
I had a hard time convincing my mom to buy one. She didn't understand why I needed another one. But I get it. Being low income and poor, something like that isn't something you can really afford. I eventually got one when I was a teenager. I still remember playing SMW to death. I had save files with everything completed, fastest completion to Bowser, and a normal game with nothing but secret exits to end game. My favorite Game Genie code was the one where you have a moon jump.
Other games that really influenced me were Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country 2, Final Fantasy III, Kirby Super Star, Lufia 2, Mega Man X, Pocky & Rocky, Secret of Mana, Super Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island and Zelda 3. I can go on and on about how amazing all those games were, but the point is that some of those are the best games of all time. Many of them saw rereleases on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, and rightfully so, because today they are classics.
Sadly, I don't have my collection of games anymore. I think I had like 50 of them, enough to fill a sock drawer. I stupidly gave them away in the divorce, along with my system and cords. I did it because despite all the stuff she did, I wanted to part on good terms. And I wanted to get rid of most of the stuff from my youth and start over. She asked, and I said alright, which was a mistake I see now. I found out later that she sold the whole collection for $600. All I could think of was, "What a bitch."
I still have a few, though. The Mega Man X games, which were my favorites. I also bought Mario All-Stars + World, and some repro games on ebay. I also found a SNES mini. I don't really care to collect it all again, though. It's in the past. If I want to play something, there's always emulation.
