Released: 1994

System: Super NES

Developer: Natsume

Publisher: Taito

In 1987 Tatio released The Ninja Warriors in the arcades. This Super NES release of the game is not considered a port, but a remake. The game stars three ninja androids who must stop a tyrant named Banglar. There are nine levels in this side-scrolling beat 'em up. Each level is unique in its setting, and the graphics are gorgeous and detailed. Each android is unique in his speed and attacks: Ninja is the strongest but slowest; Kunoichi is the most well-rounded of the three; and Kamaitachi is the fastest. Each one uses a different weapon as well; Ninja uses nunchaku, Kunoichi uses a katana sword and shuriken; and Kamaitachi uses long blades that are attached to his arms. The gameplay is simple, yet very fun; you feel so powerful as you pummel the bad guys using these tough androids. Solid gameplay, awesome graphics, and rockin' music all help to make this a fantastic ninja game. The one downer is the fact that it is a single player game only.

A ninja named Ninja? That seems pretty lazy. Oh well. I guess it's no worse than Guy from Final Fight.

Yeah, for some reason they didn't give him a Japanese name like the other two, but the dude is awesome, so who cares?

Was this what the Power Rangers beat-em-ups were based on? Cause from the video, it seems very, very familiar ...

Y'know, the SFX sounds the exact same from the Power Rangers game (which I love), so you migh be onto something there. However, that game and this one were released the same year, and they were developed by two different developers, so most likely they just happened to used the same SFX. Pretty awesome nontetheless.

Even the music sounds similar and the graphics also look like they just swapped PR and this game's sprites.

I think those companies must have used a lot of the same tools. How do you feel about the SNES/Genesis PR games, anyway? I'd count PR as technically being nijas .. ish (especially when they were ninjas that one season. lol)

I've only played Rower Rangers and Power Rangers the Movie for the SNES. They're both solid games, but I prefer the first one. I've never played the Genesis ones, but maybe one day I will.

Same here, although I find the first one short and the movie one difficult.

That looks like fun! Odd that it's single-player though, seems like it'd be a no-brainer to have a 2P mode.

Seriously, this game would be so incredible with two players! There had to be a good reason they didn't do it, because, like you said, it's a no-brainer.

I never played the SNES game, but I remember Ninja Warriors in the arcade.  I didn't play it much, because it was pretty hard.  But it was one of Taito's extra wide arcade cabinets because the action took place on three screens put right next to each other.  Another Taito game series did this, too, in the arcade.  And that was the 2-D shooter Darius.

The cool thing about Ninja Warriors (and Darius and other Taito games) is the music was done by Taito's in-house band: Zuntata.  They are awesome!  When you get a chance, go to YouTube and search for the Ninja Warriors arcade song "Daddy Mulk."  It's one of Zuntata's most famous works.  Zuntata and Taito are awesome!

And yes, one of the playable characters is a female ninja android.

That's so cool! How many companies can brag that they have their own in-house band? I want to see a remake of this game for 3DS, and Zuntata needs to make their comeback!

Sorry I missed this one yesterday.  I'm sure I've seen the original Ninja Warriors before.  But I've never heard of the Super NES game.  Looks like fun!

It's awesome! Kicking enemy butt with a ninja android is totally rad! Seriously, I'd say it's one of the best beat 'em ups I've ever played on the SNES.
