So from what I've heard the Robocop remake sucked. It was pretty apparant it would when you heard the movie wouldn't be as wonderfully gory as the original. But, enough negativity, let's do something positive. Like my all time favorite remakes of video games. Which, unlike the film industry, can actually be pretty damn good. I'm more avoiding the fresh coat of paint ones though, so I can get real remakes though. Ones that take the basis of the original and revamp them for something more modern. Basically, they don't just look different like Halo Anniversary, they play and feel different too.
5. Mega Man: Powered Up
My favorite Mega Man game, it took the original and never stopped asking the question "How can we make this more fun?" From letting you play as bosses (complete with Mega Man as the boss for their stage" to an interesting level editor, Powered Up is a top notch remake from a time when Capcom was still awesome.
4. Tomb Raider Anniversary
Taking the original Tomb Raider and giving it those smooth controls found in Legend obviously would require for quite a different approach. Luckily, Crystal Dynamics really stepped up, with great puzzles and platforming, creating an experience far more engaging than last year's reboot. Also its Croft Manor is one of the best things ever.
3. Counter Strike Source
CS went just enough above and beyond to be one of the best remakes ever. Rather than just taking new maps and tweaking them so they can improve any flaws the original had. The result is a game I spent more time with than every other online FPS combined.
2. Metroid: Zero Mission
The original Metroid was great for its time, but also a product of its time. Part of this comes from the limitations of the NES while the other part is from how Super Metroid was better in every way. But Zero Mission brought the original to a new generation by doing what a remake should: take the basics from the game and tweak them so they make a more fun and modern playing experience. The fast pace and fun of Zero Mission makes it my favorite entry in the series.
1. Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver
Before this, my favorite entry in the Pokemon series was a tie between Crystal and Platinum. On one hand, the 2nd generation had an entire region to explore after you beat the Elite 4 and at the time, probably the most diverse roster of catchable Pokemon before you beat the game. But on the other hand, 4th generation improved the interface so much and perfected the mechanics with the physical/special split and nerfing stall teams, which were absurdly overpowered before.
Then comes the 2nd gen remakes. Not only does it have everything good about Gold, Silver, and Crystal, but it takes those perfect mechanics and fits them in perfectly. But that's not all, it perfects the interface in a way the series has stupidly abandoned since. And it also lets you have any Pokemon you want follow behind you everywhere. And it's the only Pokemon that introduced new minigames I legitimately enjoyed. Yeah, this is a perfect remake.
