Happy hump day mo chairde!

We’re half way to happiness; we just gotta keep the head down and drive on.

I haven’t much gaming to blog about as my Blu-Ray of Game of Thrones Season 3 did indeed arrive yesterday afternoon. Happy fucking days! The wife and I watched the first couple of episodes last night, and as with the first two seasons, the extras are amazing. I’m not sure if any other tv releases have this feature but GoT has special vignettes narrated by the actors in character adding extra historical context to the events. A popup occurs on the side of the screen letting you know when one is available for selection. Each vignette is of really high quality with some great artwork which I can’t recommend enough. For someone who has read the books and has a huge emotional investment in this fictional world’s history, it’s fantastic that the effort was put in by the creators to bring this to life.

 GoT

Sure I give you my heart........... wait a sec......... what?

In additional to re-watching season 3, I’ve been listening to the podcast “A Podcast of Ice and Fire” which, of course, discusses the GRR Martin novels and covers the tv show too. The hosts are pretty funny but go into some real depth in their discussions. The premise of the podcast is to basically summarize a chapter at the start of each episode and then proceed to extract every meaning possible from that chapter. It’s probably the nerdiest thing I do but I enjoy it nonetheless.

Other than GoT, I decided to reread (again!) my favourite comic book series of all time: Scott Pilgrim. I first read this about four years back when I was 22. Everything about the comic felt so relevant to me at the time that I will forever be smitten. I finished the first volume Monday night and plan on reading the remaining five volumes before watching the movie again. It’s one of those works that I want more of but also don’t in case the next release isn’t as good. The story does conclude in volume six so I am happy with it as it stands. I also really enjoy the movie (even its differences) so overall the creator Bryan Lee O’Malley gets top marks from me. One thing of note though is I honestly haven’t found a character driven comic book series since that grabs me. Any recommendations would be most certainly appreciated. I’ve bought a lot of Daredevil & Batman stuff but it’s not the same for me. I’ve been thinking about Naruto but I have to be certain because therein lies a huge backlog.

Video game humor. You gotta love it!

Anyway, that’s all for today my lovelies. Stay positive!

I liked the Scott Pilgrim movie as an action movie, but thought it was just ok as a comedy, and I understood the references. I'm weird though, Shaun of the Dead is my least favorite of the Cornetto trilogy.

Maybe my research project should be a content analysis of nudity vs. violence in GoT ...

I really like the movie but am so enamored with the comics I'm not exactly unbiased. The sense of humor suited me perfectly at the time but I can see why you would "meh" it

I might like the comics better.

Ironically I fell in love with Scott Pilgrim through the retro beat em up ubisoft released on Xbox live. That game was rich in referencial humor and somehow still had the inklings of deep character development despite it's simplistic straight forward style. The boss fights were beast and I liked how there was even a "leveling up system" based on what you ate and those hidden encounters. (Fighting Knives's father was a real highlight for me!) If I had more time and an actual team I'd probably make a game like SP with my own characters!

I enjoyed the game. First PSN game I got actually. From the sounds of it though I didn't play enough to unlock everything

Just for curiosity, what was your reaction when you got to the ending of Rains of Castamare?

I need to continue Scott Pilgrim. Loved the first two issues.

I read the books so knew what was coming obviously but I thought they depicted it well. Super fucking gruesome though. I don't want go into too much detail here for fear of spoiling for others. We should start a song of ice and fire forum post though if enough people read it

I think I'll check out A Podcast of Ice and Fire, but I might listen to a couple of them because I'm only on the second book, but I did binge watch all three seasons last summer.

I'm hesitant to recommend it to you if you haven't read all the books. They don't hold back so full spoilers without warning. I'd say hold off for now unless you don't care

Looks like I will be avoiding this podcast for a while. Thanks for the headsup.

Loved the Scott Pilgrim movie. I got the game but haven't played it yet, and I haven't read the comics.

Of the three, the comics are my favourite and different enough that it'd be worth your while to read. The movie skipped over a lot of plot points from the comics to fit into one film

I started reading A Song of Fire and Ice when one of the employees at my favorite independant bookstore recommended A Game of Thrones to me shortly after it hit paperback, so I've had to wait for each one to be published to read it. I have to say that I've kind of lost interest now, especially when Jason read the most recent one and told me I wouldn't like it. Kind of a bummer, because I really enjoyed the first three. The fourth one started losing me, though.

I definitely agree the fourth and fifth lose some of the momentum but a lot of great events still occur. I read that the fourth and fifth were originally going to be one book but GRR Martin didn't like how much detail he had to leave out so split it (among other reasons). That would explain the number of chapters which don't really progress the overall story arc. I'm hoping the sixth book comes on in the next few years but unlikely. My other worry is that he somewhat rushes the last two novels (even if unintentionally) so that the HBO series doesn't have to play catch up. I'd probably suggest reading a synopsis of the last two book releases if you never plan on reading. It may just be enough to pull you back on board for the next one.

I'm about halfway through A Feast for Crows, I've got to hunker down and finish it so I can catch up.

Of all five, I thought A Feast of Crows was the weakest. It took me the longest to read by far

In one word: Never. I don't think any HBO shows have ever been on Netflix have they?
