Late to the party - Tales of Xillia

I'm one of those people who always seems to be one of the last people to get around to playing a game. In this case, I'm not horribly late to the party, as ToX released in the US last August, but late enough that it's no longer a new game.

I'm close to the end of the main story at this point, but like all Tales games, there's a ton of stuff to do and titles to earn. For those not in the know, Titles can be earned by fulfilling various requirements during the game, for example: pulling off a character's special move a certain number of times, recording a certain number of items in your "Item Book" or monsters in your Monster Book", beating certain monsters or bosses, or any number of other things. Titles are worth a certain number of points, the easier ones are worth less than the hard ones, and can be spent in the New Game+ screen for bonuses in your new game - keep your shop levels, carry over items, money, equipment, experience multipliers, etc., so it really is worth trying to get as many titles as possible if you plan on playing through a second time. ToX has two protagonists and you have to choose one or the other's story to play, so there's my incentive to play though a second time, so that I can see the other character's story line.

I like most things about the game, but there are a few things that I have issues with. The first is a lack of a either a manual or a good tutorial to properly and easily explain the battle system and the characters' special moves. I went through most of the game before I figured out how to make Jude, the male lead, do his snap pivot move. And I had to search several websites to find out how. The same goes for most of the battle system. I am pretty much just button mashing and hoping for the best, and have only managed to pull off three chained attacks in 60+ hours of play time. One was during the tutorial, and the other two were complete happy accidents.

The other thing that bothers me are the costumes for some of the female players. Luckily, I had an optional costume for the female lead, but some of the npc characters make me wonder how they keep their clothes on during battle. Google the character named Presa and you'll see what I mean. Much as I like JRPGs, I have to say that a lot of the female costumes do bother me. I hae nothing against showing a little skin, but when most of the women portrayed are in serious danger of falling out of their clothes, it does get a little old.

I'm on the fence about trying to platinum this game. I still can't figure out how to do two of the characters' special moves and I'm wondering if it's worth bothering with on this playthrough. It would have been nice, but I think I'm ready to go beat the snot out of the final boss and his minion at this point.

I haven't ever started Xillia yet. I'm close to the end of Graces F. I may start it next but then again I've got a whole bunch of shorter games I could start or finish. *sigh*

Take a break, Peter. Play something horter and then come back to Xillia. It may keep you sane.

I have many of the same caveats with the series. I loved what I played of Tales Of Vesperia for example but the combat system introduced something "new" every 10 minutes. Before long I was kind of lost when it came to pulling off some of the more difficult techniques.

Seems like a common eccentricy in Tales games to have somewhat cryptic battle systems.

I'm glad it's not just me that had a problem with the combat system adding a new "hold down this button while pressing that button and moving the left stick to the right" every 10 minutes. I had to restart after 50 hours of play due to not remembering any of the good moves. LOL

Nope,you're not alone,Peter. lol.

Luckily, we can get away with button mashing some of the simpler moves and still manage to defeat the big bads of the games, lol.

Xillia might be more merciful in that regard. In Vesperia weren't there a few bosses you had to defeat by using what you learned in the tutorial,Tami? I distinctely remember wailing away at a poor sod for over an hour because it took me that long to randomly do what the tutorial asked me to do. lol.

I have Xillia but I haven't even opened the box yet.  Which characters do you think I'd like?

Personally, I liked them all, but I'm guessing you'd like Elize and her stuffed animal Teepo a lot. I think you'll like Leia, too. And Milla has multi-colored hair (but not pink, unfortunately).

It is deffinately one of the most complex combat systems they have put together. I have only put about 8 hours into it. But it seemed just when I was getting used to the combat system, they would drop another mini tutorial for another comat technique. I love the Tales games, but I'm ashamed to admit I have a terrible track record when it comes to finishing them, lol.

I've managed to finish the main story of Symphonia, Legendia, and Xillia, and got almost to the end of the main story of Graces f, and gave up early in Vesperia. And I've never even started the Abyss and Destiny.

I'm too broke to not be late to the party. Note that I entered the recently passed generation right when it recently passed.

That's how I usually roll too, Joe. I didn't get a PS1 until after the PS2 had come out. I don't know when or if I will be joining this gen, and if I do, it will probably be a handheld.

I'll get to Tales of Vesperia sometime.

I couldn't get into Vesperia when I tried the first time, but that was the case with Symphonia when I first played it, too, and now it's one of my favorite games of all time. Syphonia, that is. I've never gone back to Vesperia.

I have Symphonia. I want to play that too.

I plan to get on some Tales games this year.

Yes, you should Symphonia remains my favorite, and I'm pretty excited about Tales of Symphonia Chronicles coming out next week. I still have $40 on my Amazon giftcard from Christmas...

Snap pivot is just hard to get the timing right on, or at least it was for me.  I almost never used it.  Also, you're probably right where I put the game down after doing a bunch of side stuff.  I need to just bite the bullet and finish the damn game!

Once I knew what to do, which is never properly explained in the tutorial, it became pretty easy. The two I can't figure out are Elize's Teepo Switching and Leia's Elongating Staff.

I fnished Jude's Story last night and beat the Golden Knight Mage. I am ridiculously over-leveled at this point, but I like it when it doesn't take me an hour and too many deaths to beat the bosses.

Haven't played a new Tales game since the 3DS port of Abyss, wish I could play Xillia.

No PS3? That's too bad. Xillia and Graces are both good Tales entries.
