Media a Day - I'm going to try and consume some type of media every day and talk about my experiences on here, with the one other rule being that I have to play or reminisce about one video game every day, using backlogger's fortune cookie thing, suggestions, memories that pop into my head, etc. I may choose to podcast this stuff in the future, we'll see (sorry, Matt; I'm curious why you're so averse to podcasts). Oh and Nicelob1989 had an awesome idea of posting an inspiring message every day in March. Mine for today is

"Carpe Diem." Sieze the Day. I need to do it more often, myself, that's for sure. This laying in bed all day thing is not what I want to be doing, though I don't mind being a night owl to a point; it's just not what I need to do in my life right now, though. I tried turning things around, but you see ...

... yesterday was a busy and disappointing day to say the least. Got a call at 7:15pm that the computer's playlist at the station marked all songs as red and went into manual mode, or I mean, Wide Orbit Automation went into manual mode. After coming up to the station, trying a few things myself, a handful of 4 minute phone calls between myself and my boss, and about 36 minutes on the phone with a Wide Orbit representative, not including the time it took me to reach said rep, apparently there is some issue with both our hard drives connected to the control room PC.

There is a 250GB drive meant to run the OS, which the guy (who was very nice and patient)  from WO told me was probably the one with the issue, based on all of what he heard, and suggested we order an emergency drive from them on Monday. I told my boss all this, and she said the last WO rep who came down thought it was an issue with our 1 terabyte HD, the one used to store our audio assets. That's the one we're on a list for already to have them come down and replace.

So we are currently running everything off CDs, and off air between 2am and 10am, which is when the student DJs are not scheduled. I guess on the bright side, people have been liking the music from the CDs better than what the playlists usually spit out, or at least one person called to say so. It's all the same music in the computer, but there is a pretty big difference between what gets played more often compared to when I upload music to Wide Orbit and Natural Music 5 and let those programs do the work.

This is all coming at a time when we're planning a lot of cool changes to the station, too; for instance, one DJ wants to do something like 102.1 The Edge's Adventure Club, where there's a set time where the indiest of indie stuff gets played and I just suggested to another DJ for him to do a super-heavy metal hour, cause we have so much great stuff that might not fit with everything else we play, but that I want to get out there.

Friggin' life, man.

Long Story Short, I was awake until 11am this morning, partly because I also had to get my work out and 150g of protein taken care of while this was going on and offered the DJ who got off at 2am a ride, cause his truck broke down. Would you believe that, at 10 calories per gram of protein, Taco Bell's XXL Steak Nachos were the healthiest option at 498 calories and 47g protein compared to Cane's Caniac meal (which I also had) at 1206cal/49g (about 24cal per protein g I think) and Whataburger's Chophouse Cheddar Burger (looked at but did not eat) at 1160cal/60g protein (17cal/protein g)? Believe it. I had milk to supplement the other 104g I was needing I think, I may have ate something else as well and forgot. Just had 75g worth of eggs and what was left of my milk just now.

Anyway, obviously getting all of my food and exercise in at night has not been conducive to changing my sleep pattern around. Tonight I still need 75 more g protein and I want to watch Rush before the Sun comes up, maybe get to Don Jon tomorrow before I have to return those to Red Box at 9am. I don't know why, but I can not enjoy any kind of serious movie during the daytime near as much at night. Well actually, I do know why, but I'm trying to finish this blog so I can eat.

At least I was somewhat productive today and coded a few more ads for my professor's research. I'll probably get started on my own research over Spring Break, which for me starts this upcoming Friday. I'll be going back to Dallas, as family will be in town to visit. I'm thinking of maybe doing something for my birthday then, when there's family around, but we'll see. It'll help to get some things I want gifted, considering I already bought my $292 round trip ticket to LA in May for the Meet the Media class and the $300 deposit for said class is due on Tuesday. Planning on rewriting my budget tomorrow and just noticed the university is paying me less than it was. My $1000/mo stipend has become $849. This should be fun.

Finally, I should probably get to something relevant to the theme of MaD, so I'll say that after playing Song Pop and Movie Pop on Facebook for the first time in possibly over a year, backloggery's Fortune Cookie told me to play

This was planned as a Nintendo 64DD game, but I don't think that it ever officially released in the States outside of a Gamecube disc with it and the original Ocarina of Time on it that I got by pre-ordering Wind Waker however many years ago.

The first time I played it, I remember thinking they made the dungeons too much more difficult because the layout of the Deku Tree confused me so much I gave up in frustration ...

... apparently, I was not the brightest kid, because while there are more enemies; Goma's babies and eggs are scattered throughout the dungeon in this version, adding to the number of enemies in the original; and the puzzle are somewhat more complex I think; I don't know for sure, cause it's been so long, but I want to say there are more steps involved in solving the puzzles or more pieces in the puzzles, if you will; it was not difficult to get to Dodongo's Cavern before I finally quit the game and went to sleep somewhere around noon-ish, I believe. I know I said 11am before, but I think that was simply when I started getting tired.

Another thing I noticed is how friggin' fast it changes from day to night in Hyrule Field. I could swear they sped it up from the original, but I could be wrong. I think my playing is a lot faster than it was when I first played the original somewhere towards the end or even a bit after the N64's lifespan, cause I know where everything is pretty much ... and now I really want Navi and that stupid owl to shut the fuck up.

Oh yeah, aside from Link to the Past, which I only experienced at my older brother's friend's house, Ocarina of Time is the first Zelda game I ever really played and I didn't own it until probably 2000 or so, I want to say. I actually always thought LttP looked boring and wasn't much warmer towards OoT when I rented it based on the hype it was getting. At that time, I had a hard time tolerating the relatively slow starts of even action RPGs. And no, I was never diagnosed with or thought to have any form of ADD, in fact I was constantly complimented by adults for how patient I was in real life situations. Maybe all that being patient made me too antsy for RPGs when it was time for entertainment, who knows?

Anyway, that's my impressions of Master Quest so far. What did you guys think of anything I said and what game or other media-related thing should I blog about next?

And in case you need it, here's some de-motivation for you.

What? Watching the Avatar cartoon series got me really interested in Daoism. Gotta take the ying with the yang, man. Laughing

I take it the band name was inspired by Dungeons & Dragons?

And that is one great song.

Demons and Wizards is actually a side project from Hansi Kursch of Blind Guardian and Jon Schaffer from Iced Earth. That particular album is based off the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Two of my favorite bands and one of my favorite novel series ever lol. Laughing

I never have gotten around to Dark Tower ... or any Stephen King novel for that matter, only the films and television shows.

Demons and Wizards is also the name of the 4th album by  English band Uriah Heep from 1972.

We have that song at the station for Classic Hits.

Never knew what album it came from.

Going well so far, but so far has not been the challenging part. It's all uphill until the end of the semester now, but if I use my time better than I did last semester, I should be ok.

The Master Quest in Ocarina of Time reminded me of the 2nd quest in the first NES Zelda game.  Same overworld map, just harder dungeons.

Speaking of consuming media, I saw The Wind Rises yesterday.  Yay!

Nice! I hope they recognize him at the Oscars. I'm doing my ballot right now and marked that for what I guessed they'd give Animated Picture to. I hope I'm right.

Did you catch the video game reference in The Wind Rises. I'm not saying what it is until someone gets it. It jumped right out at me, and I looked it up later to make sure I saw what I saw.

I played the mirrored version of the Master Quest after I beat the regular version of Ocarina of Time on 3DS. I didn't find the puzzles that difficult, but there were a bunch of times where I spent minutes trying to figure out in my head how to go about certain ones.

Yeah, I was 12 or 13 when I first tried it, so it's not as bad now.

Today wasn't much better, but that's for today's blog. lol Sorry you had a bad one too.

And until recently, I didn't play much of Master Quest either, so we're about on the same page.

The media a day idea is interesting, combining Backloggery's Fortune Cookie feature. You should podcast it as well.

I like those theme playlists. Get some folks to listen to something that is out of their bubble of music.

I'm digging the positive images you guys are posting.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised that in class the DJ brought up the idea related to 102.1 The Edge's excellent (imo) Adventure Club, because I was thinking of the exact same thing myself already.

I'll podcast something maybe this Friday or later, just waaaay too busy right now.

And thanks, spread the love! lol

My ambition does not pan out as you will soon see, if you wish. There is no obligation to read all my blogs. There are a lot of them. lol
