Yep, BaD is over but I'm still writing. Not up to 28 post yet. Am I crazy? Maybe. I am one thing though, tired due to the medicine to help my neck injury. So I'll make this one quick and easy about a game I'm playing recently, Renegade Ops.
Renegade Ops is a pretty straight forward top down arcade twin-stick-ish shooter. Its very good to look at and the game play is fast and frenetic. However that wasn't what caught my eye and made want to try this game went it went on sale in a PSN flash sale. Here's the opening to the game, see if you can spot why I like it.
If you haven't figured out, its because the commander in the clip is voiced by Tom Clarke Hill, who also voiced Sergeant Cortez from Time Splitters. Yes, that is my reason. I'm so desperate for Time Splitters 4, that I'll buy any game that reminds me of it. Thankfully there's a game worth playing in it, albeit with flaws. The game is really hard. I was seriously stuck on the first level for at least a week. Only through the game's handy leveling up system, that will level up even if you lose a mission, did I ever get past that level. Speaking of the game's leveling up system is a bit of a pain in the ass. It has a weird tree system of unlocks that you can equip as well as a set amount to use. Meaning, you have to priorities what you need for a mission. It makes things definitely more strategic but couldn't we have some of those equips just as automatic add-ons as we level up? I don't understand why I have to equip a more health instead of just getting it automatically as a level up. However, the two biggest problems with the game are the graphics and physics. The graphics are really beautiful, especially for a game that's nearly 3 years old...but your car isn't beautiful or very easy to see. It blends into the background at times, making it hard to spot. The physics of the game are not very fun either. Its super easy to hit something and flip your car over. Worse, you have no recovery time when that happens meaning enemies will take the advantage of your flipped state until the game automatically flips over. Coupled that with the squirrelly controls of the car, and you got some cheap deaths ahead.
Still, Renegade Ops still delivers some good old fashion fun. Its not anything special but it is a breath of fresh air worth trying once. Plus if you close your eyes during the cut scenes, its like your playing Time Splitters 4. Sigh... almost.
