It seems yesterday was my day to fuck around, where today is all about lying in bed and getting in srs bizness mode to finish coding ads for my professor, a task which really should not have taken me this long were it not for lack of sleep, drowsy medication, and the crazy things my mind does when bodily issues like that are combined.
I think what I'm doing could make a decent drinking game for TV viewers, though.
The rules are simple. You and your friends try to code characters based on these instructions:
Alpha versus Beta males & females
Voice Over – What sex is the announcer of the advertisement? An announcer defined as an off-camera narrator.
-
M – Male
-
F – Female
-
N – No Announcer
-
B – Both Male and Female Announcers
Operationalize Alpha
• subject is active
• subject has personal agency
• subject is capable
• subject is dominant over environment and other characters
• secondary characters show deference to Alpha
Operationalize Beta
• subject is passive
• subject does not have personal agency
• subject is inept
• subject is submissive to other characters and environmental factors
• subject shows deference to other character or entity in ad
OTHER
Operationalize Domestic
• subject is shown as a caregiver independently or in conjunction with another character
• subject is shown within the home environment as opposed to workplace or other outside home environment
• subject may be domestic outside the home if they are shown as part of a family/caregiving unit (e.g. taking kids to the park)
• subject is not to be considered domestic if they are related to a domestic character (e.g. husband) but not shown in a participatory role
Decide what amount of drinks you want to take for every time you see/hear the following:
No announcers
Both male and female announcers
Male announcer
Female announcer
Alpha-Domestic Male
Beta-Domestic Male
Alpha-Domestic Female
Beta-Domestic Female
Alpha Non Domestic Male
Beta Non-Domestic Male
Alpha Non-Domestic Female
Beta Non-Domestic Female
Record your results on a spreadsheet for 292 randomly chosen commercials and see if you can keep up with the multitude of characters stuffed into mere seconds of some ads when you're shit-faced!
Or just start realizing you have 75 more of these to go and start drinking. I guess that's the easier game to play. So far I'm winning.
I should have just slept instead of worked at the station a bit yesterday, fighting my tired eyes, but you know me and my motto:
"I don't quit when I'm tired, I quit when I'm done." Now use your imagination to picture that message on top of an image of some guy drinking, cause I have certain sites blocked on my Chrome browser for Lent, and Pope Francis knows Internet Explorer can't copy image URLs for shit.
