What Do You Do For a Living?

After finding out that Homelessrook was retired, I thought it would be neat to find out what everyone else does for a living. I don't know why, but I always find this kind of stuff fascinating. Us gamers come from all different walks of life, so careers seem to be all across the board whenever I ask a group.

As you may have come to learn from some of the things I do here, I'm actually a software guy. Sometimes referred to as a programmer or a software engineer. Or at least, that's what I used to do when I first started this career. At this point I'm more of a software architect. Rather than just writing code, my day to day responsibilities include writing specifications for how software systems are to be implemented and what technologies will be used to accomplish the task.

I also do some supervision of other junior level programmers to ensure they stay on task and to answer/discuss any technical questions/ideas they may have. Most of the time I really love what I do, but it can be a real grind when it wants to be. It's incredibly fulfilling to program stuff for PixlBit because the feedback for what I do is instantaneous. I get to see it working in motion and used by all of you lovely people!

That's enough about me - what do you guys do? Do you love your job or hate it? Going back to school to do something different? Let me know!

I'm a park ranger. I'm seasonal now, six months on, six months off and I love it. I was year-round for four years and I didn't love it. As a matter of fact, I was starting to hate it (supervisor issues and we'll leave it at that), hence the move back to seasonal. I once again love my job. In the off season, I work whatever I can find.

Very cool - I had a feeling based on your user name. I imagine it must be nice getting to spend days outside, at least when it's nice out. If you don't mind me asking, what are some of the things you do day to day?

No two days are ever the same, which one reason why I love it. Most days usually start withh cleaning toilets and the picnic area, I do most of the maintenance on our equipment, everything from weedwhackers and chainsaws to our Kawasaki Mule, I do some very minor carpentry and plumbing, grounds work, trail maintenance, supervise  volunteers, develop and give nature programs, some law enforcement, and I'm second in command, so on my boss's days off, I'm in charge. Not real fond of those days, myself.

I started my career in the active duty Army! I was infantry for over 10 years... These days, I'm in the National Guard and going to school. The reason I had to get out was because I wanted a different career path than being just a grunt. I did my time, and want to enjoy civilian life for a little bit. It's actually pretty boring lol.

I'm currently a Freelance Production Assistant/Warehouse Guy for Invodo, a company that creates video content for the web (if you watched a video from Autozone, Toys R Us etc. on their website explaining one of their products, chances are we might have made it).

I'm trying to find other jobs since it's been slow, I actually applied for a freelance job for Discovery Channel in Dallas yesterday when one of my higher-ups posted it to Facebook, but being that the shoot was today, and I had to make a StaffMeUp profile last night to apply, looks like I didn't get it (and on top of that had trouble with an invoice I forgot to send Invodo, then had to send thrice... arrrgh!).

Looks like today is jobs Wednesday, what with me already planning on mentioning my job in my blog today before seeing this, smartcelt telling everyone what he does, and you posting this; I have the same approach to my job as you do, I love it, and everyone I work with, but it can become a grind (thought atm, my problem is it's going way too slow, I need more hours).

I have considered going back and getting my Master's, possibly an MBA, but I'm waiting to see how this job goes first.

I'm a Building Code Official at Penn State University.

By Building Codes, I mean that I inspect all blueprints and future projects coming to the University to make sure that they meet the required guidelines for population safety. I usually specialize in Accessibility, but I'm looking to spread my wings a bit and move into the Mechanical (Heating/Cooling Systems) side at some point.

I also permit and keep track of everything that happens within all 4,000 buildings owned by PSU as well.

To be honest though.. I truly hate my job. I'm highly underpaid for what I do and I can't stand to sit at a desk all day.

You need to get a "He who controls the spice controls the universe" mug for  your desk then.

I work at a machine company. We machine parts accourding to drawiings provided by our customers.. We deal with carbon, stainless steel, brass, copper and many other metals. We also provide flanges and fittings. Galvanized stuff..You know some stuff you need when you are connecting plumbing, dryers and washers and stuff like 90 degree angles and stuff lol. My position was shipping but moved on up as supervisor or sorts. Making sure everything is running as smooth as it can be.

I'm a programmer by trade, but I haven't done that in a while, haha. I became a Systems Analyst at my current company (a telecom) and have been mostly doing maintenance on our databases and creating database-driven tools (where the programming comes in occassionally).

I love my job. I have a lot of freedom and the people I work for are great, so I don't see me going anywhere any time soon, but I would like to get into some more web development. It's been forever since I coded something for the web.

I'm an IT Consultant. Until recently I was the Supervisor of Network Systems for City of Kitchener in Ontario. For the last 9 years I've been mostly self employed working on Identity Management, Service Desk solutions and SharePoint. I basically take on whatever there is. Right now I'm looking for work.

I'm disabled, so I don't leave the house much... that's why I can blog so much and spend most of the day on my projects.  Sometimes I'll take on a music production job for an ad or a cartoon or an artist of some sort, but that's rare.  Mostly I try to keep at peace and take things slow.

I'm a Technical Project Manager for a mechanical press manufacturer. I oversee projects for different retrofit jobs and other installations. It can be boring at times but at least it gives me time to get on here.

Graphic Designer. I do mainly Print and T Shirt stuff but every so often I get to make logos (the fun stuff). I call it the fun desk job because sometimes I do my work outside, and I get to listen to music/podcasts all day while making something new that clients are excited about.

I'm a System/Business Analyst...or a Software Consultant. Mostly sit at home since we are allowed to work from home! Sometimes travel to clients sites when we have to to and I sometimes go into the office which is only an hour from me. But I do a lot of documentation and defect analysis and other random things for the project I am currently on.

I'm a Freelance Art Director - my specialty being photo manipulation and Photographic Art Direction. I love what I do, especially those "anything is possible, take the ball and run with it" kind of gigs where you can really experiment with some awesome-looking imagery and concepts!

I work customer service at a place that sells wholesale items to mostly hospital gift shops.  I don't like my job, but I do like most of the people I work with.  Before this job, I worked at a church.  I liked that job, but didn't like the people I worked with there.

In college I wrote game reviews for The Dallas Morning News, but now I just write for GamerDad.com.  --Cary

I"m a radiographer, commonly known as an X-Ray tech. I started off in hospitals and clinics. But for the past 16 years I have done mobile X-Ray. I go around to nursing homes and assisted living centers. The exams are done with the patient lying in bed or sitting in a wheelchair. It all depends on the body part in question. I do love my job, because I get to be out in fresh air. I spend the vast majority of my day driving. About 3 of the 8 hours is spent actually doing X-Ray exams. Sometimes it is simply a test of endurance. But i enjoy being around elderly folks. Hell,I'm nearly one myself!

I manage a couple of group homes for people with mental and physical disabilities.  I love my job and that's what matters the most.  I actually got my degree as a Math Major.  After a couple years I went back for My Masters to teach high school Math.  I aced my teaching tests and finished everything but student teach.  Student teaching is full time and doesn't pay which meant I would have to work full time weekends to make it.  I just quit on the decision my current job makes me happy and I know a make a difference every day.  It also helps that every single day is different and I've been in this field now for almost 15 years.  It's wonderful.

I ve been an art teacher for five years now, I did work as a free lance illustrator and was even a fashion designer for a while! What I soon realised though is that I have a rather social side and art jobs in general are quite lonesome affairs, theres a reason why Van Gough hacked off some of his ear!
