why are indie games so big these days? i dont get it, i thought we moved past the snes era, so why all games gotta look like that? doesnt make sense. we have awesome graphics in games like battlefield yet games look like fucking minecraft. its stupid.

realistically, gameplay has improved so much, now we can see real people and fight and drive realistically so we gotta look like shit? braid looks shit. limbo looks shit. and they are shit games. so fucking boring. worst game i played the other day was this game called journey. fucking terrible. all you do is walk and shit. p[eopel keep saying its like the best game ever, but its fucking boring.

shit needs to happen in my games. we need a good story like uncharted or resident evil, not this pretentious fake art shit. games arent art, theyre like movies: fun. so let me have fun. is it that hard?

all you indie fags: get a new job, you suck

I don't know if you're being serious or not, because your blog seems almost too cartoonish to be real.  But it might surprise you to know different people have different ideas of fun... and that's ok.

We're pretty nice and open minded around here.  If you're going to troll, I suggest you do it on another site.

I think for some people, it's because it reminds them of the type of games they grew up with, or they prefer the simpler gameplay, or they like the aesthetic.  I don't play a lot of those games, but I do play other indies like Amnesia and Doublefine games.  I'm not really interested in games like Gone Home, but if people like it good for them.

The way i figure it, gaming is so big now that there's something for everyone.  And not all indie games have that SNES look... some are 3D games like DayZ or Banished on the PC.  People just like different things.

Some of us just do not want the realistic gameplay and characters and such.  I enjoy indies, but I do also enjoy the big budget AAA games.  I have also found that I need indies to cleanse my palate between those AAA games.  Otherwise I burn out and revert to replaying all of the games I loved as a child for the 50th time.

I'm still on teenspot occasionally. Most people who are on there are old regulars who are around 20-ish. Mainly just play trivia and shit.

And damn... that april fools joke didn't last long. Oh well, I got to call Cary a girl and tell him he couldn't work at Sega because of it...

Also, fuck me, this was when i was like 14. Man, that's like a nostalgia trip...

Let me give you my feedback on your thoughts.

"thought we moved past the snes era, so why all games gotta look like that? doesnt make sense. we have awesome graphics in games like battlefield yet games look like fucking minecraft. its stupid"

First, you are generalizing that every single indie game resembles the look of 16-bit videogames or look like Minecraft when there's indie games like Limbo, Braid or Dust: An Elysian Tail that while in 2D, they don't use pixelated graphics (Dust for example has hand drawn backgrounds and animations). Sure, some games like Super Meat Boy, Cave Story or Fez do have graphics that resemble 16-bit videogames, but those are stylistic choices and if the creators feel like they fit the game, why not? Besides, the technology in pixels has advanced considerably that now pixel art can look better than in the 16-bit era. As for Minecraft, not every indie 3D game looks like that. Ever heard of Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Psychonauts? Those two are indie, but don't look like Minecraft in any way. Besides, not every game has to look like Battlefield and there's also the fact that since most of these indie developers are you know, independent, they don't have the support of a big company like EA, so they have to make what they can with the budget they have.

"realistically, gameplay has improved so much, now we can see real people and fight and drive realistically so we gotta look like shit? braid looks shit. limbo looks shit. and they are shit games. so fucking boring. worst game i played the other day was this game called journey. fucking terrible. all you do is walk and shit. p[eopel keep saying its like the best game ever, but its fucking boring"

Do you know about subjectivity? What for other is bad for the other is good? Look, first, not every indie developer has the budget to do realistic things and not every single game has to be realistic, and that's okay. They bring variety for those who are tired or want to rest from triple A games or want to experience games in a different way. Another thing is that those games you find "boring" and "shit" work the other way around for others who may find the game "great" or "incredible". Like I mentioned before, it's all about subjectivity.

"shit needs to happen in my games. we need a good story like uncharted or resident evil, not this pretentious fake art shit. games arent art, theyre like movies: fun. so let me have fun. is it that hard?"

Again, subjectivity. What for some is "fake art shit", for others is the contrary and you know, like this kinds of things and some find indie games "gasp" fun (which is also something subjective). Without getting into the argument that "games are art", I would like to mention that cinema have always been considered an art form, not just recently but extending back to even the 1900s. Just saying.

"all you indie fags: get a new job, you suck"

Because insulting people that like indie games will make people look at you with respect....

Look, I don't mind if you don't like indie games, people dislike stuff that others like, and that's fine, but you are coming off as some one who might as well be saying "the thing you like and I don't suck and you should feel bad, period". Besides, I think you are judging indie games from just a few examples and that every single one is "fake art shit", when there's games like this. It seems you have a narrow definition of indie, because it doesn't mean "art" but it comes from independent, which when it comes to games, it's a game made without the help of a big company or isn't affiliated to said big company.

Just to finish this off and repeat it again, it's fine that you don't like indie games. What is not fine is insulting people for things they like.

Firstly Alex, I agree with you. You know I love Indie games. However, using games like Dust wouldn't have turned fake me around. I would have used something like Miasmata or Serious Sam 3 (who are still indie btw) to show that indie can mean more, and generally is just a way to get away from greedy publishers.

Secondly, read this article I wrote a while back: http://plus10damage.com/blog/2013/4/1/retroabanetotheindepende

I still stand by most of this

Don't even care that this is old. Indie Game = I can't figure out 3d Sketch up.... which is free...... it includes its own tutorial on how to do 3d design it took my dad Age:54 3 days to learn, it took him 2 days to make a full 3d scale model of our house, he's a boiler mechanic.
So just because indie game developers are lazy libertarians who don't wanna work I'm supposed to say "Naw graphics mean nothing in 2015 its all about 2d scrollers!" Fuck that raise your standards, their was a time when graphics, game mechanics, good story, and characters that stay with you where not only okay to ask for, but expected, that time was called the 90's.
I understand most indie games have 90's graphics, but understand those games where great in their time, because they where the pinnacle of their possible graphics combined with all the other core features a "GAMER" (not some nurse playing candy crush on her phone, or some loathsome half-adult who plays Minecraft) looks for.
Addictinggames.com is full of flash games, not something you play and talk to others about, games you play when your bored in a computer lab, these are not GAMES their the anecdotes of games at best, their that pong game at the loading screen of a REAL GAME.The fact that anyone would pay ANYTHING for these games is ludicrous. All it does is cause game companies to get lazy and contract out their work to other lazy so called artist, that are really just whiny liberals who will claim that ANYTHING is art so long as it comes from Hea----Fart. Fuck that Leonardo Da Vinci was an artist, Kazushige Nojima was an artist.
These so called "Devs" of indie games are nothing but wastes of air that have nothing and I mean nothing to contribute to this industry, and by the way the very premise that portal was even a acceptable puzzle game proves the direction that these companies are going, less active listening to the players and more money for their fat ass lazy pockets, Good Day!
(P.S. Sorry if you though portal was a "Good" puzzle game, i don't mean to offend the mentally retarded.)
