Nebraska, Inside Lewyn Davis, and Blue Jasmine were all just ok for my tastes. About what I expect from indie drama/comedies, though admittedly the latter two movies are by not-so-indie directors, Coen Bros. and Woody Allen.

Now if Nebraska had focused on the wife of the idiot who thought he won a million dollars, it would have been a great film. She was hilarious. That is the opposite of the opinion I'm sure almost all critics would have, as making it a movie about her would make it less quiet and pensive, and more raunchy and raucous. Y'know, more entertaining.

12 Years A Slave was great as expected, and pissed me the hell off for the entire movie, just cause fuck slavers.

Frozen was just awesome. Love that movie. Definitely deserves to be the now highest-grossing animated Disney film.

Gonna watch Anchorman 2 and a few others soon.

My professor and I got into a debate over minimum wage yesterday, despite that I don't know what would happen if a raise was implemented or have a strong opinion one way or the other. We did argue endlessly about ridiculous hypotheticals, though. That was interesting. And frustrating. But interesting.

Watched Citizen Kane for the third time Monday, as it's my professor's favorite movie and he wants a paper on it. My opinion still stands: it's an absolutely essential movie that evolved the filmmaking process substantially, even if it was unsuccessful upon releae, but I'm more interested in Hearst as a businessman than I am in his private life, so I couldn't care less about much of the movie's story.

I'm just about caught up with work in the station, but I'm going home this weekend to enjoy some North Texas free concert goodness and watch the Saturday Final Four game (which is why the free concert goodness is in North Texas) with my family ... on my parents' TV, cause I'm not paying $318 to watch it on Jerry's.

Then it's just doing some more coursework and such, which has been so much easier this semester than last somehow. With that and the fact I go to L.A. in just about a month's time, 2014 is shaping up to be my year.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

yeah, the story of Citizen Kane is aight, but it's the technical aspects that make it so awesome.  I don't know how many times I've seen it, but enough.  I don't know about the Coens lately.  Their style has changed.  They're still good, but not as interesting to me.  I remember the glory days of BArton Fink and stuff.  I love The Man Who Wasn't There though.

Barton Fink was another just alright one to me, honestly. Caught that on Netflix not too long ago. I dunno, I'm not as into the Coens as other people as much as I thought ... yesterday, when I told a girl in my class I liked the Coen Bros. I guess it's just something you say in conversation. My favorite movie of theirs is actually Burn After Reading. That one's hilarious. I wathced that with no idea what it was or who the Coen Bros. were.

Never really heard of The Man Who Wasn't There.

And yeah, Citizen Kane is one of those movies where I'm sure you can find something new every time; although I honestly haven't, and I've been looking ... maybe I'm just that savvy that I caught it all the first time?; but that's not necessarily why I watch movies. I wacth movies for story, characters, and sometimes visual effects, but when I say visual effects, someone better has a laser-monkey. I guess a better word is spectacle.

That's pretty much why I'm cool with How Green Was My Valley winning the Oscar over Citizen Kane, even if I don't agree with the politics that led to that decision. Now there's a classic movie I need to watch again.

i think the thing about Barton Fink is the time period it came out.  There were no indie weird movies back then.  We take them for granted now.

actually, have you seen The Cat's Meow?  It's another HEasrt movie where HEarst murders someone.  Kirsten Dunst is his lover in that one, and it features Charlie Chaplin (who he was trying to kill).

I haven't, but that sounds interesting. My professor recommended I read Citizen Hearst, and I am trying to track down that book.

I love Frozen, I still need to grab it for my blu ray collection. When it comes to minimum wage I read where australia has theres around 14$ yet it doesnt effect the cost of things over there. Im thinking about moving there dammit!

Im actually going back to school this summer/fall. I hate school but I need to do better for myself. I hope you have in L.A.!

Yeah, but then everything is more expensive in Australia too, and I understand the argument for why minimum wage being higher might have to do with that. Then again, I can also see how more spending money could stimulate the economy. I need to read more about it, so far all I have are competing Forbes and Druddge Report articles. And all of the debates I've heard on Fox News and elsewhere, but those TV channels to me are just for fun, not anything I'd consider educational on any topic aside from basic headlines, really. Not that Forbes and Drudge are much better. but still.

Good luck in school! I will say this, it depends on what you want to do whether a degree will be worth it or not. I graduated with a radio/tv degree Magna Cum Laude, but I was behind the workforce from those with Cs who had internships under their belts, due to the nature of the field. Research before you go, cause Bachelor's don't get you what they used to. In fact, part of the reason I'm going for a Master's degree is because a lot of people think of it as the new Bachelor's, because so many people have Bachelor's now that it doesn't separate you as much as it used to from other potential employees.

I've only seen Citizen Kane once a few years ago and liked it a lot.

Most people do ... well, except my Freshman Film History Intro class and to a lesser extent, myself.

Me: A bit on the overhyped side, but I understand the hype and respect it, even if I don't necessarily love it.

Them: Basically expressed the same feelings towards the movie that Peter Griffin did on the rental copy he taped over. They (and to be honest, I as well) were not happy with the ending. Or the long road to the ending, really. lol

Aside from Frozen, I also have 12 Years A Slave and Inside Lewyn Davis on my watchlist. So many movies, so few resources to see them.

Yeah, it's easy in the U.S., since we make much of the entertainment that releases here and globally. Red Box and Netflix etc. also make it cheap. I have to say, there are many things I would change about the U.S., but the relatively easy access to pretty much all forms of entertainment is not one of them.

Yeah, Frozen is great. I wish the beginning wasn't so sad but I guess it's necessary to set up the rest of the movie. I saw Anchorman 2 this week and really enjoyed it. It's not as good as the first one but it's fun. The best part, though, is the big fight scene. Oh my goodness Laughing

Ha! I guess they did something similar to that Ocho fight in the first movie? lol

And I liked the depressing Frozen opening, though there were some ... problems with it. At least it wasn't as sad as Up!'s opening? lol

The opening of Up was so depressing! Cry

Usually I'm not a fan of recent Disney flicks but I liked Frozen. This is the first movie my younger cousins were right about.

I have yet to see Anchorman 2, which is kind of odd considering how much I loved the first one.

Same here. I liked Wreck-It Ralph a lot, though.

The only thing I hate about the movie "nebraska" right is whenever I travel outside of the state (say the new england area) and people ask me where i'm from, they then ask me if I've seen the movie Nebraska and how I thought of it.

This must be how people feel when they get asked how it's like in Bangkok after hearing that 80's song.

I have to admit after hearing your thoughts on the movie I want to check it out. Give me pensive over raunchy anyday!

I like pensive movies that are billed to me as such, but I don't want my comedies too quiet. By too quiet, I mean they don't make me laugh out loud enough.
