This news is a little old but it's too good to pass up, so please bear with me if you already heard about it. Square Enix has been surprised by the success of Bravely Default both in Japan and abroad and apparently is rethinking its mass appeal development strategy, which means we might be getting more JRPGs from them that are focused on being great JRPGs. What a novel concept! Check out this USgamer article for more details about an interview with Square Enix's president. This sounds good and I hope they carry through with it.

Now that I'm going back to University to study this stuff, I'm interested in whether it's these companies listening too much or too little to market etc. research.

I read that article as well. I think Square has been doing things their own way last gen and thus crashed and burned to the ground while losing local and global support of their FF franchise. If anything, I dont mind getting more JRPGs like Atlus on 3DS and Vita honestly. I hope they do change.

Considering they are the ones who lit the fire with FFVII that made converts of people who never dreamed of playing JRPG's and started a trend that carried on for nearly a decade, one would think they would have known this a long damn time ago. Atlus has known and has made good on taking advantage of Sqeenix's goof.

I think if they would've called it Final Fantasy, it would've sold even better, since it is essentially a FF game anyway.

I'm hoping that they do follow through on this. For the most part I have loved BD however I still have to finish the final dungeon with a final boss that has 5 forms.

I think I need something short as a pallette cleanser before taking on another long RPG. That being said I'm buying Conception II and probably FF X HD soon.

This is the best gaming news i've heard all year. Hopefully we get some new IP's out of it aswell.

They started down this bad path right after The World Ends With You released and decided they needed to appeal to everyone everywhere. Then two years later we get the ultimate result of that line of thinking: Final Fantasy XIII and the increasing evidence of how the planned sister-games in the same universe were going to flop. Making games that they think are actually good is probably the best move. I can't imagine they will lose more ground with that approach than they already are by trying to appeal to everybody at an enormous expense.
