I thought I'd take an intermission and do something a bit different than the BrokeLeg Blog.
One of my favorite things about gamers and their blogs is the List Blog. Doesn't ever really matter what the list is about, they're almost always interesting to read, and they always give insight into a fellow gamers tastes.
This is an ambitious blog/list, and I'm certain that I'll never get through all of these games. The plan is to stick with the list, acquire what I don't have, and enjoy them for as long as I can. I rarely finish up an entire game before starting another. I seem to average between 25 and 30 hours on a title I like (such as Ni No Kuni) before I need to stretch my legs and take a break from it. Some games that are standouts, like Skyrim, I was able to play a full 115 hours and enjoy the entire time, not having to cross over into another game to rinse my palate.
It's an RPG-heavy list. I like what I like. This list will see updates. Additions, and when I beat the game, a letter score based on absolutely nothing more than my own personal tastes.
Most of the titles on this list are games that I missed for one reason or another. Some of them are games that are pending release. Most of them are games that I've heard other people reference. mention and/or blog about
-Golden Sun: Dark Dawn DS My kiddo actually has this game right now, we ended up getting it in a combo pack bundled with a Professor Layton game around Christmastime this past year at Wal-Mart. I ended up also paying $40 for a copy of God Of War Ascension that ended up permanently dropping in price to $20 a very short time later. I was super pissed off, but should have seen it coming. Anyhow, I'll be giving this one a go pretty soon. It looks good!
-Disgaea: Hour Of Darkness PS2/PSP This is another PS2 Classic I've had my eyes on, being as I've no SRPGs at all in my lot of games. I played Shining Force with joy as a youth, and wouldn't mind getting into this genre again. Most of the SRPGs that I'd choose to play within the genre easily run 50+ hours to complete, so taking the plunge into the NetherRealm and exploring this wacky, stat-filled goodness would most likely mean foregoing another strategy/tactical rpg for a while.
-Always Sometimes Monsters PC I'm really excited to play this title. I don't know a whole-whole lot about the game, other than what I've seen in trailers and that it's touted as an RPG about the human experience. SOLD! It'll be out soon.
-Shin Megami Tensei IV 3DS It's been out for a while now, and I'm just waiting for a sale or a price drop to pick it up. Hopefully my boyo will let me use his 3DS to play this one, provided I don't "wear out my welcome" while playing Golden Sun Dark Dawn. Anyhow, I've read about the difficulty level of SMT IV, but that the story is super worthwhile.
-Breath Of Fire IV PS While I recently dropped a foolish belief I used to hold - that the older generations of games weren't really worth experiencing - I've always thought that BoFIV looked good. I've watched a lot of YouTube videos reviewing the game and some of the general gameplay, and I'm beginning to think that they don't do the game justice. For 6 bucks I'm going to see for myself.
-Final Fantasy Tactics PS I've been reading a lot of back and forth "which is better" and "vs" forum threads around the Web about FFT's superiority to Disgaea. While I do in fact already own a copy of the PSP version of FFT (War Of The Lions), I'm pretty sure my PSP has given up the ghost. For $10 on the PSN, it can't hurt to double up and finally check out what many people hail to be the definitive strategy/tactical RPG. I know LeeRadical really digs this game, and his write-up is part of the reason this title is stuck in my head lately. Another big draw for me is that job system up there...depth incarnate.
-Chrono Trigger SNES/PS/DS I've wanted to play this game iin a proper fashion for a long time. I tried playing it via emulation on a touchscreen phone a few years back but it just didn't do the game any justice. I recently picked up a copy of Chrono Trigger on the PSN. The load times are a bit longer than what I'd like (by maybe 3 or 4 seconds) but it's not a deal-breaker by any means. This game still looks gorgeous, even when played on a 55-inch HD plasma screen. I'm about an hour into this gem and I'm sure it'll be my daily go-to game in between other gaming sessions. I'm just not in a huge hurry to finish it; I'm content to sip this one rather than chug.
-Odin Sphere PS2 I've had this one in my digital library for a few years now, it's time to finally pull the trigger on it. It's an action-RPG that I'm pretty sure is the spiritual predecessor to Dragon's Crown. Good times!! Developed by Vanillaware and distributed by Atlus. This one should be at the top of my list, but its hard to decide if I want to play this before I play...
-Persona 4 PS2 This one is also in my digital library. I don't need to explain why this game is good, everyone knows. I was hoping i'd get a Vita and be able to experience P4 The Golden, but the original isn't going to make me complain.
-Terraria PS3/360/PC/iOS/Droid I'm not a fan of MineCraft. Not sure why, it just never caught on with me. Terraria, on the other hand, looks cool as fuck. It has bosses. I think I even read somewhere that you can level up. It's got more than enough RPG elements to satisfy an RPG fan like myself. I'm just afraid I'm going to like it way too much and give up on other games.
-Valkyrie Profile PS Now I've come to the first title on this list that I may not get a chance to play - Valkyrie Profile. I'd love to see Lenneth's story begin, but I just checked out the used price of the game on Amazon...$80 for a less-than-stellar copy. Maybe I'll be able to find it out in the wild one day here in town at a thrift store, scoring a gem like GoAztecs does.
-Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga GBA This is a game I never had the pleasure to experience back in the good old days of the GBA. Fortunately it holds up well with emulation, and I was able to play it fairly well on a touch screen when I first tried it out a few years back. I'll be giving it another whirl soon.
-Tales of Xillia PS3 I started up a game of Xillia a while back and ended up putting it on hold because I'd borrowed my buddy's copy of ACIV Black Flag, and wanted to finish up with that and get him his game back. I've enjoyed the brief time I've had with it so far. When I get back to this one it's highly likely that I'll re-start the game, as I like to keep the continutiy of a story as fresh in my mind as possible.
-Bravely Default 3DS The final fantasy game that never got named Final Fantasy? I'm all for it. However, the likelihood of me buying this without a serious price drop is pretty small, and there are a couple portable games ahead of Bravely in my list. Still, I can wish though...
-Borderlands 2 PS3 I really enjoyed the first Borderlands. It was a mash-up of something RPG-like and a first person shooter. I'm all for the FPS, so long as it's not a modern military fps. Add in tons of loot and it makes for something that's addictive. It's the itch to a scratch I can't quite put my finger on. When I want to play a video game and not think, this is what I've been playing lately. So far I've been soloing, I'm about to break level 9 as Axton the Commando. I'm upgrading my turret to full strength and will focus heavily on continuing to upgrade the turret. I love how it lays down a nice thick blanket of cover fire and allows me to get in a flank or throw a volley of grenades to soften up a bunch of Pandora scum. I may not renew my Plus membership for a month or two, and I really want to play this through one full time before I lose the rights to play. Anyone wanna co-op?
-Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2: Eternal Punishment PS SMT games always appeal to me. Typically the games feel like they're quality video games, the translations are good, and they're tons of fun. Everything I've seen about Eternal Punishment looks good to me, save that it's just the first half of the story. The second half was released for the PSP a couple years ago, but that's not what I'm interested in. Though the battle mechanics in Eternal Punishment aren't as spiffy and polished and modern as those that came after it (looking at you, Persona 3 Portable) they still look like a ton of fun. And the story is what SMT games are REALLY about. With a psychotic bag-headed antagonist named the Joker and all the demon summoning you can want, it definitely warrants a space on my dream list here.
