The 3DS Makes The WiiU Look So Redundant

So I've been considering either a 3DS or a WiiU for the past few months--even wrote a blog about the former way back when. The recent Smash Direct helped finalize my decision pretty quick. It was revealed that Super Smash Bros 4 on 3DS would not only run at 60fps, but would come out several months earlier, have online play, and have all the same characters as well.

I...honestly see no reason why I should get a WiiU anymore.

- The 3DS has plenty of first-party franchise representation--multiple Mario games, multiple Zelda games, Starfox, Kirby, and Smash too. It also has stuff the WiiU doesn't, like Animal Crossing, Bravely Default and Pokemon.

- It's fully portable, unlike the psuedo-portability granted by the Gamepad.

- The dual screen functionality looks much more intuitive in the 3DS than having to switch back and forth between the Gamepad and the TV.

- A brand new 3DS XL is $200, with games at $40 each--and several are going to get cut to $30 permanently by Nintendo on Tuesday (fucking finally). $60 for Pokemon X/Y AND 3D Land seems far more enticing than any of the $60 titles on the $300 WiiU, either now or in the future.

- And speaking of futures, the 3DS looks to have a brighter one than the WiiU by a mile, despite its sales peaking in 2012.

This sort of thing wasn't an issue for me when it came to, say, the PSP and PS3. Both had enough great first and third party offerings to justify owning both. But when I look at all the stuff the 3DS has going for it, I just can't think of any reason to invest in a WiiU. Alongside my PC and Vita, the 3DS is plenty IMO.

Yeah, I want a 3DS for Smash, but the only console I'm eyeing is a PS4, which I only won't get if the XBO is looking better come winter or whenever I actually plop down the cash.

Right now, I'm honestly more interested in seeing more about Sunset Overdrive and Season 2 of KI than anything lined up for the PS4. But I feel like all three companies have a lot to prove at E3 TBH; none of the consoles look like they're worth their asking price to me yet.

I like the look of both games you mentioned, but I ultimately still want a PS4 more than an XBO. The $100 difference and more connection to the brand, plus lack of horrid PR moves all factor in.

It's so strange. The PS4 is much better hardware at a great price, but the Xone has more interesting games to me. It's like the PS2 and original Xbox in reverse, LOL.

They both have good games for me, so I'm leaning way in PS4's favor as of now. I want to play inFamous Second Son and a few others more than I care about Killer Instinct or Sunset Overdrive. We'll see, though. My older brother has owned Nintendo and Sony consoles, where I've only owned Nintendo, so maybe it's MS's turn in this family, especially if it sees a price drop soon enough.

I kind of see that. But I also still see some value in the Wii U. The Virtual Console is bigger and there are a few games that you can only play on the console like the Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, and Mario Kart 8. Plus with Smash 4, I prefered to play it on a Wired connection. I have bad memories of playing Brawl with Wifi.

That being said, I don't blame you for wanting a 3DS because the has a much more dependable track record. The 3DS is the only Nintendo system I've played more for the last 3 years. If I could transfer my Virtual Console stuff from my Wii to it, it would be perfect.

Indeed, that consistency is what makes the 3DS seem more appealing to me. It isn't a victim of the frequent software droughts plauging the WiiU. My main fear with the WiiU is that I'll pay $300 + the cost of the games only to see it collect dust half the time.

Ironically, I was just about to get a Wii U a few weeks as an early B-Day present to myself. Now I'm not sure. I want to get it because I've wanted one for awhile and I can get one at a discount from the store I work at but still...its not a bright future for it.

You have a larger software selection on 3DS for sure. Especially for the types of games that I enjoy, which are JRPGs. The question is, how badly do you want to play Mario Kart 8? I already own a WiiU, and play Monster Hunter a lot, but it's just one game. I also play the VC games on the gamepad, but there are only a few of those. I like the system, but it needs games dammit! For sure buy a 3DS, I'm not sure about a lot of things in life, but I can definitely tell you that the 3DS--XL will bring a lot of happiness!

I'm not really into racing games, so Smash and Bayonetta 2 are pretty much the only upcoming games on the WiiU that I'd really be interested in. Meanwhile the 3DS has Kirby, Azure Striker, the new Shantae game, Shovel Knight, and Smash on the way, not to mention the shit-ton of great games it already has.

I honestly view the 3DS and WiiU as two seperate ecosystems unlike the PSVITA which benefits from accessing games from PSN that cross play between PS3, and VITA. Also you can play off screen with VITA in some cases. Im just saying that I cant compare WiiU and 3DS. They are worlds apart unfortunately. Cry

I understand your reasoning.  I do really love my Wii U though.  I wish the gamepad was more portable, but it's ok.  I honestly don't ever play my 3DS though.  It's too small, and I don't really care about the games.. I'm much more into my Vita.

I ended up selling my PS3 in part because of how much more time I spent on the Vita, LOL. :p

Same here. The prices have refused to budge since I put them in my Amazon wish list last year, LOL.

I bought my 3DS xl in Sept. and I love it.  I plan to get a WiiU, but I'm waiting for a price drop.

I just ordered the 3DS XL and Pokemon Y on Amazon. So excited. :)

I want an XL and a Wii U. I love the games on my regular 3DS it's just so fuckin' small!

I'm missing so much already on Wii U and when X drops I may have to sell and organ for it.

I was considering the original 3DS...but with my big ass hands I didn't want to take the risk. :p

3DS was the easy choice for me last year with the many titles I wanted for that system over Wii-U. This year, there's been nothing for 3DS for me, so the two are about even for me at the moment. Wii-U, though, still hasn't shown me anything interesting beyond Pikmin 3 and HD Zelda. I really hope there will be something I'll be interested in for either system this year because so far it's been litterally nothing.

The sheer number of interesting games in the 3DS catalog is insane. It will be a long time before I run out of stuff to play on it.

Yea, I have plenty in the backlog already. I'll be fine for a while.

While I like the Wii U and think it will have a solid future ahead of it - the only system Nintendo simply cut off dead was the Virtual Boy, and that because its sales were abysmal even in comparison to the Wii U and there really wasn't much more that Nintendo could do with a monchrome red system - I can respect this decision. Right now, the 3DS has by far the best library of any current gaming platform, and that includes consoles as well as handhelds.

For sure. I already have a Vita (and love it), so the 3DS looks far better than anything else on the market in terms of software.

Oh it wouldn't be you without the passive agressive Nintendo relationship :P

I respect your decision though and I do agree that the 3DS has great support. However, i'll still get a Wii U because I have more options to buy, I prefer Smash on console (I could consider the 3DS though), GBA virtual console and I find the tablet/TV set interesting.

I have booth and love them, the Wii U does lack in games but it will pick up. I think E3 will do good for Nintendo, especially since news of the next Zelda title will be released. The 3DS has a good library and would def be a good buy.

But they want you to buy their skylander type toy swapper figures so you can use them in other games and have different stats? Is that not enough to make you want to go out and get a Wii U?

...

No?

...okay.

The Amiibo toys will be cross-functional with the 3DS after they release a special accessory. So, nope, you don't need a Wii U for that.

Now you'll need one for all the awesome new games they announced at E3!
