Record Store Day!

Well good morning Pixlbit! It is another nice start to the week, even though I’m a little “banged” up because I slept in a funky position and now I have a small headache and a sore neck. I’ll be fine, but if I were a pro athlete I would probably be on the disabled list. Anyways going back to today’s topic, last weekend was fun because I spent time with the family, and one of my favorite music days arrived, Record Store Day. On Friday I didn’t think I would be able to check out the local mom & pop for RSD because it was spend time with the family day, which is cool, but there was one item I did want and since it was RSD, I figured it would be sold out because I never show up right when the store opens.

So RSD is a day when a bunch of labels and artists have special releases of their work on vinyl. This is supposed to get folks to go back and buy music locally. It seems to be getting bigger and bigger with more and more fans showing up, but this also brings out reseller guy who just wants to make a quick buck. It sucks but that’s the nature of the beast. So after breakfast the family decided to go to the local mall, which means I had a chance to look through whatever, is left and maybe pick up the one item I wanted. There were a lot of other things I would have liked, but it would have been more for the novelty of having an album on colored vinyl rather enjoying the music.

I strolled into the local mom & pop and there were quite a few people there but most of the RSD rush was probably over. There were still two or three of the Crosley briefcase turntables, which were cool, but not $100 cool. This year the owners of the store cleared out a section that is usually for Blu-ray discs and placed all the special RSD albums. Smaller 45s were placed on a fold out table next to the registers and I think any of the freebies would have been there but those were gone.

There were a couple of people standing at the shelves with the special records: A lady who was camped out on one corner and a guy who was casually checking out the opposite corner. I took up the middle looking for my one item. I found a couple of items that were from last year’s RSD like Notorious BIG’s Ready to Die which I missed, as well as a bunch of Rap albums. I would have bought those but I had a big purchase to make the next day so I passed and besides my wishlist for RSD was one item deep. While searching I spotted this

The song is also featured in a Target commercial

I already own the album in both physical form and on iTunes, but having a 12” single would also be cool. My brother called me a hipster for buying it, but I like their music. I couldn’t find the one item I wanted which was disappointing, but as I was going to give up the guy who was casually looking left so I checked out that portion of the display. I think the lady on the opposite end was writing a novel and she wasn’t going anywhere. I saw some clear covers so I checked those out and I FOUND IT!

This is my favorite song from their most recent album, and how is the design? Even the owner of the store loved the concept.

There were two left and I thought about buying both, one to keep and maybe frame, and the other to play. I decided to leave the other one just in case there was someone like me who showed up late, and besides I already have two singles, I’m happy. I made my way to the used CD section **ducks from people throwing things**

I didn’t stay long in this section because there was another guy camped out here (I think he was a Coachella-fest guy), and my brother was getting a little bored so I picked up these albums

X-ecutioners was a flashback to one of my last art classes in college. I used to take a nap before this class because I had something like a five hour break between classes and I needed something to get me hyped as I walked to class with my CD player.

This was the song.

I also bought the other rap album because of the single Déjà vu. This was another college song and I already had the CD Single, but I wanted their album. The Lisa Lisa album I just noticed is a kind of greatest hits album more than one of their albums. Kind of a bummer but it was $2 so it’ not that big of a deal.

Overall I had a good Record Store Day. I found what I wanted, was surprised about my Haim find (I really need to start reading RSD lists), and added some new albums. RSD is fun but you should always check out your local music store, lots of good stuff to be found, and a lot more fun than buying from a big box store, online, or digitally.

That’s all for now, more later!

-Chris

That sucks! Record Stores and RSDs are fun, especially just to wander around looking at the different vinyl covers, and finding new, random, (and sometimes cheap) music.

How could I have forgotten about RSD...  Dang it.  Oh well, at least I got a couple of albums for my birthday.

There's always next year's RSD! Ooh birthday music, what did you get?

Blitzen Trapper, I think that they are the last two albums to come out.  VII and American Goldwing.

My boss had to come in on what should have been his day off to do a training session for some volunteers and I had to shoo him out the door so he could stop on his way home. I gave him all my vinyl and the vinyl my mom gave me. I'd been lugging it around for years telling myself I'd get a turntable some day and I finally admitted to myself that was never going to happen. Andy appreciates the records and I think they found a good home.

That is awesome that you sent him out so he could enjoy RSD, and very cool that you gave him your vinyl. It sounds like Andy will take care of your records.

Andy is taking excellent care of my records. He's one of the best bosses I've ever had, so it felt good to be able to get him out of the park on time for a change so he could do something fun.

I'm with you on Lisa Lisa. I heard one of her songs on the radio and then a couple of days later saw that CD and said why not.

I've eyeballed a few vinyls at Hasting's in Nacogdcohes in the past, but I have no turntable and they're too expensive. Still, if I ever see a copy of Judas Priest's Sin After Sin, I'll buy it just for the artwork.

RSD is a cool concept that I'm not sure is exactly promoted near where I am in Dallas or Nacogdoches, TX. Undecided

As for HAIM, I'm actually glad your bro called you a hipster for that, cause that means I can still play them on KSAU, guilt-free. lol

That clear Paramore cover though ... so is there like a clear, working piece of that vinyl that I can't see?

Sad Wings of Destiny beats Sin after Sin as far as artwork goes. It's one of my favourite Priest albums too.

Nah, I'm still partial to Sin After Sin, but that one's a close second.

The artwork is my favorite part about the records. A couple of records I bought are most likely going to be display pieces. I saw some frames for records awhile back and they would be perfect for a small display.

RSD is odd when it comes to promotion. Originally I found out about it by accident, and the local mom & pop never advertised it.

Haha, yeah Haim is still hipster-ish especially now that Target uses that single.

Nah the circle part, which is the size of a 45 is where the music lives. The rest of the "record" is just plastic, to mimic the part of the video where they were smashing records.

I wish there was a Hastings near me, the one thats close for me is  still 46 mins away. I dont see why they havent expanded. Im hopeing they do  soon. I went in one when I went to stay with my grandmother after my car wreck back in 2012 and liked it. It kind of is a nice replacement for the loss of Borders.

I used to go to the record store once a week. I miss that.

I used to do the same thing, just to browse and maybe find one or two albums. Now I think I visit the local mom & pop maybe once or twice a month.

This blog makes me mourn for the hundreds of records I sold for next to nothing last year.

I have no room in the living room for my turntable anymore and am forced to listen to CDs on a $99 Sony Blu Ray player since my Arcam CD player borked. It is to weep. :(

Sorry man.

That's the one drawback to records is that they take up a lot of space, and dang dude having that player break on you after you sold off your vinyl...I hope the music gods give you some positive karma

That's cool that your pops loves records and music. I like that a lot of folks can trace their love of music back to someone like their parents or other family members.

Thanks! I'm happy there was a couple of them left.

I wish there was a record store closer to me, the only one I know of is a little out of my way so I have to plan ahead.

When in doubt, thrift stores are fun to hit up just to see what they got. I'm lucky to have a mom and pop shop that is 15 minutes away that I can visit, but when you don't have something that close you do have to make sure that when you visit a record store you have to plan your trip and make sure you get everything you want.
