Hello fellow Pixlbits,
As some of you may know, I recently spent two weeks back home in Ireland visiting my friends and family. This was followed, unfortunately, by an extremely busy return to work last week so I've had a difficult time trying to catch up here on Pixlbit. I'm looking at 160 messages in my inbox here at present so I've a lot of blogs to read but I'm looking forward to it.
This years annual Ireland trip went completely according to plan. Family were good, friends were good, weather was to be expected so great, and the pints were flying (not literally obviously though I did have a drink on the flight over). Jetlag effected me a bit, which thinking back may be a first for me, but I got over it after a few days. My best friend and I drank the bones of eighty pints over the twelve days I was there so I'm officially set to detox mode for the next month. I felt like such a broken man upon returning that the idea of drinking a feed of pints almost turns my stomach. Moderation is key.
Anyway, enough of that.
The reason I'm calling this blog "Back from the void" is that my parents, whom my wife and I were staying with, still do not have the internet. Combining this with my USA smartphone not working in Ireland (for a decent price anyway) and it felt almost like a step back to a simpler, more carefree time. No internet. No emails, No Facebook. No Twitter. It was actually quite refreshing. For full disclosure, my Mom just bought a laptop two weeks ago and signed up for broadband last week so my parents will no longer live in the 90's. It's strange to me to think how they have no need (other than skyping me) of the internet in their lives. My Mom talks about being able to bank online now and whatnot but they really don't care for it that much. It makes me wonder when I'll get to the same stage and start completely ignoring modern technologies. I ignored smartphones for the longest time but eventually succumbed. I ignored Twitter for the longest time but eventually succumbed. Maybe the fact that I'm a gamer will keep me up to date moreso on things but I wonder whether I'll still be bothered with the latest consoles in my fifties when I'm sure to have a rather tremendous backlog. It'll most likely depend on any kids I have at the time to keep me young no doubt but I certainly could see myself leaning towards my old video game collections and just reading for enjoyment.
Anyway, please pardon the musings of a sometimes sentimental fool. I hope to be back in the swing of things soon so I'll be posting a few more blogs shortly and will return to my usual community contribution. Expect something regarding Stealth Inc. and a blog about FFX (though I may wait for Backloggers Anonymous to post before adding my own comments. I'm lazy that way...)
Stay sexy everyone.
Later
I need to go to Ireland some time in my life. One of my old friends/acquaintances from high school traveled t several European countries expecting to like Paris the most, but hated it and loved Ireland the most.
As for the whole out in the wilderness thing, I already have days where I wish I were your grandparents. Of course, this only happens if I'm on a walk and it's lovely outside, whereas if I'm inside and my Internet is slow, I become The Devil.
Glad to see you back!
Barcelona sounds awesome by all accounts I've heard. My brother has said he became a Barcelona Dragons fan simply cause of how nice the people were, my former high school teacher moved there and is loving it. I have heard nothing but great things about the city and its people.
Just make sure to check out some other parts of the country too. Dublin is fine but it's like going to New York only and saying you know what the USA is like. I'd recommend you to check out Galway & Cork also. You could do all three easily in five days. Ireland's pretty small...
it's one of the reason why I like living where I do. We kinda have a mix of both worlds here. Some area's you'll be lucky to have internet and cell service yet in the next county over they could be tricked out tech wise as if they were a major city. My folks are the same way with internet. Me dad is choping at the bit though to get it so he can enjoy youtube and netflix.
