Hello Pixlbit! I hope everyone has had a great Mother's Day. Lately I've been debating on getting the PS Vita Slim. At first I didn't think of getting it, but when the Borderlands 2 Vita Slim Bundle was released I started to think. So I wanted to look up some forums to see if it's worth investing in. I've had the original PS Vita 1000 since day one and it's given me a great run. It still works perfectly today. The only flaw it has is the battery life. It tends to tell me I have low battery even if the battery level shows I have around 30% left. But I think that's my fault because there were times where I would charge it while playing.

I remember paying $200 for it when it released and I still had to buy a game and a 32 gb card. At the time there was a bundle offer going on. If you would buy a game and a 32 gb card you would get a case of your choice and a screen protector pack for free. So of course I couldn't pass it up.

In the forums that I've read, of course there's been debates (there still is) about the OLED vs. LCD screens. I won't go into great lengths to say that the OLED is better, but in order to see the full difference between the two screens, you would have to play the same game on both consoles side by side. Honestly, I've played both of them and there's a slight difference but nothing major. The colors are still the same. Sharpness on characters and the text in games look slightly different but almost the same. The LCD screen is a bit brighter than the OLED. If you've played the vita since day one like I have, you will see a difference but looks pretty much the same.

The battery life is a lot better. From what I've read and heard from other people, the battery life is longer than the 1000. The original vita gives you about 3-4 hours of gameplay and takes about 2-3 hours to charge. The slim vita supposedly gives you 5-6 hours of gameplay, but I haven't heard about how long it charges. The reason why the battery would go down faster with the orignal vita was due to the OLED screen. Since the downgrade from the OLED to LCD, this enabled more battery life. When I took it out of the box, I wanted to charge it at first but I wanted to download Borderlands 2 before. The battery life was at 75% when I turned it on and when I was done downloading Borderlands 2 and all of the DLC, it just went to 50%

The weight between them is a huge difference. It feels like if you were to switch from an iPhone 4s to an iPhone 5s. Basically it's lighter, thinner and feels better to hold. One thing I noticed between the orignal and slim vita is the fingerprints I left on the screen. For some reason I can see more fingerprints and smudges on my slim vita than the original. Weird thing is, I have the same type of screen protector on both of them because I had an extra one from the 2 pack I got when I first bought my vita 1000.

The back touch pad and rear grooves are better too. The placement on the orignal one was fine, but as games started to use more of the back touch function it started to become more difficult for hand placement. There were times where the game would have sprint as the back touch pad and I would touch it without any intention and it would be annoying at times. Now with the slim, the grooves on the back are wider and finger placement feels more comfortable. It feels more rounded and just overall more comfortable to hold.

Just a little thing to add as well. The PS Home, Start and Select buttons on the original Vita were pretty small and had an oval shape. With the slim, the buttons are round and feel natural just like the triangle, square, circle and ex buttons.

Anyways, I just sucked it up and bought the PS Vita Slim Borderlands 2 Bundle. To me it's a sweet deal because you get the Slim Vita ($200), an 8gb memory card ($25) and a digital voucher for Borderlands 2 ($40). I still have my original vita and plan to give it to my girlfriend. So overall, I think the slim is a great buy. If it's your second vita or your first, I think this is a great upgrade from the original.

Well that's all for today. Have a great week everybody!

BEYOND!

Congrats! I'd like to try the Slim out sometime but unless my current Vita hit the bucket, I couldn't justify the expense nor would really want to. I guess I could give my existing to my wife but she's more of a Nintendo player if any. You do make a good point about the rear touchpad being uncomfortable at times and the better battery life sounds great. I'm not so picky to care that much about the swap from OLED to LCD so that wouldn't necessarily put me off. Let us know how Borderlands 2 runs. I'm somewhat interested in checking it out.

Honestly, there's no need to rush in to get a Slim. If your current Vita is still working fine I'd say stick to it. I only switched because the battery on mine is to the point where it would die by just one play session (probably estimated time of 1-2 hours of gameplay). I love the OLED as well and there are times in some games where I wish the screen was OLED than LCD. The size, weight, battery life and overall feel to the Slim compensates for the screen. My girlfriend is the same. She plays mostly 3DS, but she's been wanting a PSP just for Kingdom Hearts, but once she saw I had another Vita she asked if she could have my old one and I wasn't going to say no. I actually thought of getting her a Vita.

Borderlands 2 runs great. I don't know if its just me, but I played the game on both of my Vita's and the graphics look smoother on the Slim. Sure the graphics are sharper on the OLED screen, but the motion in the game is a lot smoother on the Slim. So like I said, unless your current Vita goes caput there's no need for the Slim. But if you really want one because of all the features, I'd definitely go for it.

I haven't tried the slim, but I love the OLED.  I wonder how big a difference it really is.  I love the Vita.  It feels so good in the hands compared to the original 3DS.

There's a big difference. I was surprised on how comfortable it feels compared to the old Vita. It's lighter, thinnner and feels more natural to hold. You can tell the difference between the screens, but it's not to the point where you would be disappointed. I know what you mean about the 3DS. When I first bought it I thought it felt nice, but felt pretty small. Then I upgraded to the 3DS XL and haven't looked back at the old one since.

Neat. I'm still debating getting a Vita, but whether Persona 4 golden is enough to tempt me is yet to be seen.

A lot of people get the Vita solely for Persona 4 Golden. It's a great game, but the Vita has a lot of other games to offer. Especially if you have PS+.
