Late to the Party: eSports & Open World games

One of the most memorable things about this E3 was the Smash Bros Invitational hosted by Nintendo. I think it was earlier in the year that Nintendo shut down a Smash Bros Competition for charity, then letting it continue last minute, and now hosted their own. Of course, this was a win-win situation because fans get to see the new Smash Bros game and Nintendo gets to advertise their new game to them and the masses and the circle is complete.

I have to say that I don't play MOBAs and the eSports culture and twitch streaming/assisted gameplay is alien to me. I didn't get how people could fill arenas to watch others play video games. I always felt like playing a game was more fun than watching others play. But I feel different now after watching the Smash Bros event. I watched all 3 hours of it. It was very rivetting and exciting. Geoff Keighly from GT  hosted the event and compared it to Armageddon from the film "The Wizard". If you don't know about this film, I won't explain it, but it ends with kids playing a never before seen Mario game at the end of a gaming tournament, thus Mario Bros 3 was introduced. So here, a new Smash Bros was introduced.

I don't particularly like fighting games, and dont care about Smash Bros either. It seems this game is fun when playing coop with 2-3 other players. The sudden death matches between two players, where it only takes one good hit to take out your opponent was rivetting.  I would love to go to a live event of smash bros. I would love to see more smash bros event streams and I will look for them. I would love to see what a skilled player can do to break these games as well. These 'champions' didn't have much experience with the new game, so I don't think they were able to do a lot. I would say it was as fun to watch as a great boxing, ufc, or insert any sport here.

And the audience went wild when Mega Mans Super Smash was unleashed. Watch here!

Open World Games

(Zelda Skyrim? An explorable world and play dungeons in any order?)

I have to say that I don't like open world games. I think it's because I don't have time to explore. I just want to get through something in a timely manner. I loved open world back in the day with games like Zelda (NES) and Metroid (NES) of course, etc. I used to think the linearity of a game was a actually a beneficial quality to a game, but lately I've been warming up to open world types of games.

I really love JRPGs, which are still mostly linear, but certain games like Xenoblade and Nier have left me wanting more. I doubt that I would jump into Skyrim, Fallout or GTA, but I like the idea of exploring an open world that has more JRPG vibes like Xenoblade and whatever comes of the Zelda Wii U title which is supposably influenced by the vastness of Skyrim. I've also been playing a lot of MMOs and it seems that many new games are going into this direction: massive, social, coop, multiplayer, open world, etc. So I better adapt or else give up on gaming altogether. Like the title says, "Late to the Party".

(Xenoblade Chronicles was a massive explorable JRPG on Wii)

Yeah, the problem with open world is always "where the hell am I supposed to go next?" and if you get turned around in the wrong direction, no one has time for that crap. Having said that, I don't think Zelda will be that hard to navigate, but we'll see.

I actually love fighting games, but I can't get into watching them. I remember seeing bits and pieces of The Wizard as a kid though and I kinda wanna watch it start to finish, even if it is "sooo bad."

My main problem with Open World is not enough time to explore all the things. Open World is not necessarily bad, but I dont think that every open world game utilizes its massive space creativly as a dev with a limited space for example. I also don't always need arrows directing me exactly where I need to go all the time, more of a time issue.

I have fighting games like Marvel V Capcom, Super Street Fighter IV, Mortal Kombat, but I never play them. Smash Bros was fun to watch. I guess it depends on the game you are watching. I don't think I would watch other fighting games. Smash Bros is just a crazy game to watch, so much going on.

Funny how Skyrim has become the catch all term for "open world," yet none of these open world games take place in northern environments which is the thing that made Skyrim different from the other Elder Scrolls games, which are are all more or less the same.

This new Zelda sounds like its going to be like the orignal NES game in terms of world structure: open world, tackle dungeons in any order. What I'm wondering is if it will also have the fairly challenging combat (compared to the more recent LoZs) of the original?

I think one of your issues with open world games, besides preferring JRPG style, may be the same as mine - you prefer focused open world progession that necessitates exploration to progress, as opposed to open world where play is fueled by tons of little quests and you explore at will as some kind of virtual tourist. Problem with the latter is that most of the quests are simplistic chores and very few of them yield fruitful exploration (i.e. no good treasure or interesting spaces to find). For example, after Morrowind, Bethesda has seen fit to implement level scaled loot into their games, which means exploration won't yield any powerful weapons or artifacts because they will always be at your level. In Morrowind, you had a good chance to find unique magic items or valuable equipment when you went out of your way to explore a dungeon. And then there the Rockstar games where you don't find much at all as there is no loot/treasure system and not much in the way of random or special events to be found. On the other hand, FarCry 3, which I'm enjoying now, has all sorts of wildlife to find and hunt and the side missions allow for more emergent possibilities than these other games.

TL;DR open world games of the latter kind have a lot of lightweight filler and empty space to pad out their size. I prefer to play in smaller, content rich open spaces like Deus Ex, Metroid, Ultima, Yakuza, etc.

You said what I was trying to say in my post. LOL. I actually really enjoyed Dead island. It also had an open level structure with cars and things, but I think because of the zombies chasing me i felt like I had to get in and out of areas quickly, or atleast prepare for each outing, so I really enjoyed this game design, as opposed to large empty space where you just walk. "Open World" is a catch-all term so it isn't fair to compare to Skyrim or Fallout, but I felt like more was at stake. Xenoblade had awful sidequests, but I wanted to push further to see more of the world because it was so interesting, along with dynamic weather and day/night cycles. I'm warming up to these games. Just baby steps. Maybe I will eventually get to Fallout and Skyrim, but I was eyeing Farcry 3 for now. Just waiting on the Steam Summer Sales!

I watched some games on Twitch last week. I thought it was hilarious and strange at first but after a while I started to get interested. It's kinda fun to watch.

i recently made a foray into the LoL hubbub.  I had a good time with it, but won't be returning until I have an improved rig.

I know next to nothing about game streaming though.

I never got into Smash Bros type games. I tried the Playstation version but it wasn't my thing.

I do like Open World because I can take the game at any speed I want. Of course I do get lost. Maybe a little structure is good Tongue Out

I dont hate open worlds. I'm just interested in seeing what a company like Nintendo would do with that concept like in the new Zelda, or Konami and Metal Gear 5, which is supposed to be open world. I like a little order every now and then.

That little peak at the new Zelda was interesting, I can hardly wait to see more details.
