hmmm, you might be right about this. Making our own Mario games will be a lot of fun, and just think of the great levels people will come up with.

Where previous game-creator titles have been love letters the 8-bit era (whether Final Fantasy, Mario, or Zelda)-- this is a game-maker with the source IP of everyone's inspiration. Super Mario Bros. is the reason the whole console industry exists today and was the first gateway to virtual worlds for millions and millions of people. This is where it all began, again (after the Ataripocalypse). The characters, the images, the sounds, the worlds, and the rules of Super Mario are all iconic and ingrained in the memories of gamers and game-developers; and Mario Maker lets everyone make their own Super Mario and it does it with a fantastically streamlined click-and-drop interface.
This is the beginning of the opening of the door; to give the player the tools to create their own adventures, and thus it is fitting that Super Mario Bros. is the first entry in the Maker franchise. Nintendo is providing the language that will allow game design to be accessible to the masses (as with writing a book or painting a picture). As the public are able to create adventures of their own and share them; using the language of Nintendo's games, game design can finally become art. It becomes art when it crosses over from being a product to being an avenue for self-expression.
In the absence of Nintendo, the fans have created editors to create their own Zelda games. I created a Zelda quest (below) a couple of years ago using Zquest. Unfortunately, Zquest is as complex as a cow's digestive system, so there is still a barrier for those who are less tech savy-- this is why it is needed for Nintendo to make official tools for making 8-bit and 16-bit games and sharing them.
