The Good. Sandox. The Bad. Level Grind hamster wheel. The Ugly. World chat/community.
Of all the games on my MMO Summer games list, I was pretty excited to be playing the beta for ArcheAge. One of the main selling points for this game is the "sandbox" element. In fact, on the homepage for the game, it is very explicitely referred to as such. This is also the element the drew so much interest from players trying to grab beta keys and flooded the chat and game forums with stupid comments, racism, slurs and general rudeness towards other players. The game will be F2P when it launches later in the year, so opening the flood gates to everyone in an anticipated game will naturally draw trolls. I actually made it a rule to stay away from betas, as the excitement for when the actual game lauches takes a bit of the excitement out of it. So I did get to about level 25 or so, in a game that capped at 50 I believe, at least in the beta.
I am looking forward to playing an MMO that emphasizes things like crafting, farming, housing, trading and economy as opposed to the usual grind to end game and grind repeated raids or dungeon for epic gear, which most current popular MMOs are guilty of. I like the idea of logging into a perpetual world where I can exist and live of the land and contribute to the world economy with crafted goods as opposed to "killing all the things" for more "things". Unfortunately, for this game, the beginning is met with the usual grind to level cap, so I'm assuming that the "good stuff" that I'm looking for is at the end, but that's okay.
A couple of interesting thing that this game offers very early on is transportation/mounts. You can actually do mounted combat at level 10, and receive a shiny new mount at about the same time. You also recieve a small rowboat, which you can later upgrade to large ships. And of course, the coolest thing about the game are the gliders. Flying around the world on your personal glider is actually quite fun, although your first glider is pretty crappy.
Visually the game looks like Guild Wars 2, including the inteface and the character models look like Final Fantasy: A Realm Reborn, which is to say they look pretty good. I will keep following the progress for this game and do a bit of crafting if I get into the next beta, but the idea of a character wipe really bothers me. I might try out different classes and races next time for comparison. I'm feeling pretty positive about this game, but I'm a little worried about other characters being able to kill you, steal from you and you possibly going to prison, which I don't fully understand the mechanics of.
See y'all next week with another MMO!

huh. never heard of this one. I hear you on the want for a MMO where it's kind of a persistent world without the grind. I dunno how that is gonna happen. I like FFXIV and secret world but I just can't handle the grind right now, too many other games.
I've been playing Divinity: Original Sin. It's pretty darn good man.

Most MMOs have built in grinds, and then end game is just raids and gear. That's not what I like about MMOs. Actually, The Secret World doesn't really have levels, and you can swap out different weapons/classes when ever you feel. I'm sure ArcheAge has end game grind, but it supposably also has persistent world elements. There just aren't many sandboxes out anymore.
I had a hard time getting into Divinity. I thought the controls were wierd. It looks good though. I need more impressions before I jump back in.

Man, if I ever have a house and a yard, I'm going to water the plants in a full suit of armor just like in that screen shot you posted. To heck what the neighbors think!
Some notes on the video:
A knight's armor with built-in hang glider? I love it! Castle sieges? Ah cool! Those sailing ships look amazing!

I'm glad you liked the video. A lot of that stuff is from the Alpha, and those people payed $150 just to test the game. There are some new things in there (Pirate sea battles/ Castle seiges) that I don't think I've seen before. It looks pretty cool. I just don't know how much of it will be behnd a pay wall, and I really need to try the launch game to find out. We should play when the game launches, and we will be like pirates lol!

Ive been keeping an eye on this one on and off recently. I signed up for the beta/news things today. Its looking like a good MMO but im shocked that people payed 150$ for a game that will be f2p upon release. Of course....I guess I cant talk because Im really tempted to pay the 200$ for the Hero of the north pack on Neverwinter.....

I thought the game was pretty fun, albeit very similar to Wow and Guild Wars 2-- in a good way. I will definitely play when it releases.
As for NeverWinter, actually I've seen a lot of rage over the cost of the Dragon-face expansion lol. I don't play NeverWinter but I want to try for my MMO Summer. Do you play it? Maybe you can offer advice for the best server, class, race etc. I really want to try NW next.

I havent played it in a while actually, i need to download it to my laptop tomorrow so I can jump back on it. I played as the hunter type class and really liked it. I dont remember the server I was on sadly. It kind of reminded me of diablo when I played it. Not excatly like diablo of course but certain things. I honestly dont see why their raging about that. It comes nothing close to the Hero of the north one which sets at 199.00$. Honestly I wish they would drop the price on it. One of my biggest reasons for wanting it is you can create Drow characters. I have a love for Drizzt which is reason that, lol. I wish I had played it more then I could prolly fill you in alot better but sadly I didnt get to. Let me know if you decide to play it for ur MMO summer. Ill gladly jump on if I can with you.
