I am next-gen!

Hey everyone,

It's been a busy time for me lately as I was fortunate enough to find a new job and have spent the last two weeks working diligently to bring my replacement up to speed. A hectic time but worth it for sure. I'm a bit slow to blog about it but my last day at my previous employer was July 31st with the start date for my new position being August 11th. This of course grated me a full week out of work and hence............ I'm now next gen. PS4 to be specific.

I had previously posted here about my intention to purchase the Destiny PS4 bundle but being honest, I couldn't bear to wait so here I am.

My first impression of the PS4 was how much more solid the Dualshock 4 controller feels. While I am one of the apparent few who actually like the Dualshock 3, the 4 is most certainly an improvement; primarily due to the comfortable grip and tidier shoulder button layout.

The other obvious change over the PS3 is the interface and the greater community focus of the system. Everyone by now has heard of the Dualshock 4's "Share" button and upon logging in, you can see how much attention Sony wants players to give to sharing. Whether it's uploading pics & videos to Facebook/Twitter, streaming gameplay videos on Twitch or watching other people play, it really is very easy to connect with other players (if you want to of course). To be fair, outside of posting a few screenshots to Twitter, I haven't done much sharing of my own though I could see this changing with both Destiny & FIFA and especially with Tekken 7 when released.

As for current games, to start my collection I picked up MGSV: Ground Zeroes (which seems good so far) and bought LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (which has taken up the most of my time and is genuinely great). I've also played a few hours of Strider which was free on PS Plus and a very small amount of both Doki Doki Universe & Road Not Taken (both also free). I think I might do a write up of Strider once I finish it as something about the gameplay is grabbing me.

Strider

With Destiny due out Sep 9th, it'll be a busy time for gaming for sure. I have also preordered Diablo III (out Aug 19th) and FIFA 15 (out Sep 23rd) and I'm hoping all three games grab my attention. Basicly, what I'm saying is that come two weeks time, I'll see ye all again around Thanksgiving Laughing

Anyway, enough rambling.

Stay classy my friends.

Later

I'm getting both those games but on Xbox 360. I'd like to have a PS4, but I'll probably get a Wii-U next before the year is out.

I'm hoping the quality on both generations is up to snuff if you know what I mean. I generally dislike this between generations phase as some developers tend to make sacrifices to allow their game to work on both the new and older systems.

I've already noticed some slowdown in Wolfenstein: New Order and a full system crash in LEGO: The Hobbit on last gen systems. I think they probably built them for next gen and then adjusted them down for last gen, not always successfully.

I think it was the opposite case last gen when Xbox/PS2 games were made and then barely improved versions were ported to X360/PS3 a year later. Devs are ahead of the game this time.

I'd love to play Strider.

It's pretty good so far though kinda hard to express why. It certainly moves great with no apparent slow down even during the most hectic occasions.

I finished the story mode on Lege Marvel Super Heroes a few days ago.  I really enjoy flying around the open city.

I'm really enjoying the story mode too though I get the impression I'm not that far into it. I think the Human Torch might be my favorite so far to control though Spiderman is pretty great also.

I have a Wii U.  Does that make me 'next gen?'

In a word: Yes. And as I was rightfully corrected below, I guess it's current gen now. Ugh, semantics... Laughing

My wife and I have gone back and forth so much about when to get a PS4 that I can't remember what our current plan is lol. It all comes down to money. But it's cool that I'll already have a little library of digital games, thanks to PS+, once we do get it. You can bet I'll be playing Strider!

It's nice that the PSN allows you to grab games you can't actually play yet. If I had been on the ball proper previously, I would have done likewise...

Congrats on the PS4. I'm not sure if i'll get one myself, but I find it more interesting than the Xbone, that's for sure.

Cheers bud. With my PC not being powerful enough to run anything graphically challenging, I like console gaming for it's convenience.

Congrats man! I'd love to join you in the next gen stuff but there is still nothing big that I need to play on the PS4.

I'm inclined to agree with you but got antsy in my pantsy....

did you get time to bulk up the HD on your new system? I'm sure 500 GB may not last long given all the installs that need to be on the system, digital downloads or game discs.

I haven't really thought about it yet to be honest. I'm planning on getting most of my games on disc anyway (as I like the opportunity of trading it in if I want) so this should cut back on the size on the installs. But I do agree with you, it's not going to be possible to go this entire generation with only 500gb if you want to keep everything installed. It's like my Vita all over again...

I think the PS4 was a good choice, but keep in mind, I am a Playstation guy.  MGSV: Ground Zeroes is my favorite PS4 game, but also, MGS is my favorite series, lol.

I kind of have wanted to buy LEGO Marvel since it came out, I just haven't yet for some reason. Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition is probably my next purchase. I held off on it for PS3 putting all my anticipation in the PS4 version. It's almost here, finally!

Yeah I'm really excited for D3 too. I plan on pumping a whole bunch of hours into it before Destiny drops. I've never actually played a Diablo game before (shock horror!) so everything will be new to me jumping in. I've played quite a bit of Torchlight II these past few months so hopefully that'll prepare me somebit

I'll get a PS4 as well when I'm able! In the mean time it's not so horrible being last gen. Still rockin with my PS2,360,and psp!
