Selective Memory

I finished up Twilight Princess yesterday and really did want to talk about that.  There is one issue, I have lost the desire to talk about it.  I enjoyed it, and left the game with a far better taste in my mouth than when we last talked.  Outside of the mostly dark tone of the game, it is the Zelda game I would have dreamed about recieving, if Ocarina of Time had been my favourtie in the series.  What I mean to say is that the game feels like Ocarina of Time, but with a massive increase in scope.  Good game, and I am glad that I finally played it.

I have had a desire to play some Super Mario Bros 2.  So I downloaded it onto my 3DS.  I played a bit of it, but something felt a little off.  I was having issues even getting to the end of the first world.  I know that I hadn't played the game in years, but Mario is like riding a bike.  How could I forget how to play?  I have decided that the issue lies in the 3DS controller.  I played it on the Wii with a gamecube controller and have not had a single issue so far.  I think that the answer lies with how the A and B buttons are positioned on the 3DS as opposed to the NES, SNES and Gamcube.  I need pictures to explain it properly, but if you probably know exactly what I am talking about since this is a videogame site.

What other topic did I have to talk about...  oh yes, I listened to that Past and Pending podcast.  I am happy to say that I made it through that 2:45 monstrocity...  anyways, the topic of music had come up and it really pissed me off.  So much so that I nearly threw something.  The issue was this, apparently some youtubers said that the 60s, 70s, and 80s had the best music and the 90s sucked.  I have already had extensive conversations with people at work about similar things.  They have rosy memories of things from the 80s, but everything that has come out in the past decade has been derivative crap.  A lot of crappy movies and music from the past two decades is still fairly fresh in out memory.  Memory is a tricky thing and a lot of crap from the past seems to fade from memory.  So, the majority of music that people refer to when it comes to the 60s, 70s, and 80s is music that has stood the test of time...  it is timeless.  All of the crappy one-hit wonders have faded away and nobody seems to remember them.  So, of course the 90s and 00s seem to be the crappiest decades for music we can still remember all of the crap.  How many more times can I say crap?  The same ends up being true about movies and even videogames.

Here is proof that we have very selective memory.  I grew up with 6 siblings.  I know that we had to have been a pain in the ass for my parents.  Yet, when I look at my neices and nephews I think, "thank god I wasn't that bad as a child."  There is no way I wasn't that bad, but I cannot remember those bits.  I remember learning to ride a bike, playing Chip n Dale for the NES, swimming...  all of the fun parts of being a kid, not the punishments.

Each decade has had its highs and lows in all media, and that's all there is to be said about that.  To single one decade out and classify all of its offerings across the board as crap....that's just ignorant.

So great you enjoyed Twilight Princess. I had a wonderful experience with that game. I remember when you had a bed feeling about Midna. What do you think of her now that you know the reveal?

Most of that about nostalgia is very much because, like you said, the good things are the ones fondly remembered and stand the pass of time. I'm sure that in a decade or so, they'll say how their current media is crap while the stuff of the 90s and turn of the millenium was great. It's always like that.

Ah,screw the haters. The 90's was just as good as the 80's and 70's for me music wise. I remember listening to Green day,Cranberries,Nirvana,Sound Garden,Smashing pumpkins,NIN,Coolio,Wutang clan,SOAD,Vast,Prodigy,NERD,and a plethora of other ace bands/musicians that filled my head and ears with delight!

The main problem I had with Twilight Princess was the graphics were so brown and muddy that it was hard to see things sometimes.

Twilight Princess has two of my favorite characters, though.  Princess Zelda in that one was really cool, and I also liked Agitha and her bugs.  Further proof that there is lead in the Hyrulean waters.

I liked it at the end of the game when Midna revealed her true form and Link's expression on his face was like, "Duh...Girl...."

Haha well when those YouTubers (SourcefedNerd) I was talking about acted like Vanilla Ice was all the 90s had to offer, I got kinda mad too. lol

It is funny that you mentioned this because my friend and I were talking about this very thing yesterday. We noticed how those past decades all had some defining music genre, cultural movement, fashion, or all of the above. Yet we could not really think of any defining qualities for the last decade & a half. Maybe were just old and jaded. lol But in all fainess there has been plenty of good music, movies and such, it just seems like you have to look a little harder to find them though. Nostalgia can also cloud our memories too. Learned that lesson when I tried to watch the Garbage Pale Kids movie after I grew up, I must have been VERY easily amused when I was 8.lol

I grew up in the 80's and remember hating the music. Lately though, I've dug a little deeper and found lots to like from that time. I guess I just missed the good stuff and wrote off the whole decade because I was sick of things like Genesis' Invisible Touch, or Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, or Flock of Seaguls' I Ran.

I think those who dislike the 90's must've grown up in it. There's lots of good music there if you look for it and stop focusing on the annoying mainstream hits that we got bombarded with by the media.

I would probably place A Link to the Past above Ocarina, but just slightly. I really didn't like the forced wolf levels in Twilight. If I recall correctly, there were parts in the game where your progress was stopped to play collection minigames as a wolf or something. I don't hate Twilight, but I remember hating that part.

Also, I grew up in the 90s and even I have a hard time listening to that music now but mostly because I remember a lot of it being very dark and depressing. Even rap and hip-hop were in their gangsta rap phase, and metal/rock was all grunge and industrial. I have to put myself in a dark place to be able to listen to it. I know a lot of alternative music was out in the 90s, but much of it was dark.

For reference this is what I remember being hot in the 90s:
Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, Marilyn Manson, Korn, Rage Against the Machine, Garbage, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, No Doubt, Tool, Alice In Chains, Radiohead, etc.

I don't think these bands were all bad, and I don't like all of them, but it was everywhere and pretty depressing.

Also, I love the WiiU Gamepad for old NES games.

That's an interesting reaction to Twilight Princess. Ocarina is my favorite Zelda, but I felt Twilight was too busy paying tribute to that game to be a great game in its own right. The world map in Twilight actually felt less epic in scope to me because though it was bigger they sectioned it off into narrow segments.

Glad you liked Twilight Princess. I certainly enjoyed when I played it. It's definitely right in the vein of Ocarina of Time. And memory can be such a funny thing. As Sturgeon's Law would state, 90% of the music from any decade is crap. Probably a good thing we don't remember it.

I think I understand what you mean when it comes to mario on the 3DS. I recently bought NSMB2 and it just doesn't feel quite right with the button placement. I'm working on it but it just doesn't hit the sweet spot exactly.
