New art and Netflix adventuring! (Some spoilers)

Did something new for my Deviant-art page. Those as prehistoric as myself will recognize it as a subtle tribute to Scooby Doo only I took some liberties with cramming the Mystery Machine with my own cast of characters. For a lot of teenagers I imagine “the road trip” is used to establish tighter bonds with friends and that was what I was trying to go for here.

On Netflix I finally got to see Time Of The Doctor where Matt Smith regenerates into Peter Capaldi. I cannot speak on behalf of the squealing fan-gurls who probably get wet in the pants for Smith and Tennant but I’m personally pretty excited that an older and more troubled Doctor is at the helm again! Something about Capaldi reminds me of Hartnell and Troughton so I couldn’t be happier!

Movie wise I was intrigued by Nymphomaniac Volume I. The story of a sex addicted girl taken in by a kindly stranger who encourages her to spill her guts about all her wild adventures seems promising at first but being it is a two-parter I messed up and looked up the second part on wikipedia out of sheer curiosity. Sadly the director/story-teller takes on a “pretentious embittered dick-head” approach, destroying the chance of either character becoming remotely likable at the end. “The kindly old man” who rescues Joe at the beginning later tries getting it on with her and the ending implies she shoots the old codger and robs him. (And though Joe may not be the best person for retaliating that way, I almost understand. Her trust was betrayed afterall.) Yes, Mr. “shock jock", show us how much humanity reeks of selfish decadence! Wow, that’s so original! You’re like, the only guy who has ever taken that direction in a film before! Sarcastic? Who me? Okay, you got me and furthermore your snooty “art movie” sucks my sweaty balls!

Do I recommend Nymphomaniac volumes 1 & 2 to anyone? If you can get over the inherent cynicism in the films they have good acting and some rather steamy sex scenes. I’m simply not a fan of movies that deliberately show humanity at its’ worst. (See Black-snake-moan for the same premise with a more positive and uplifting conclusion!)

I can enjoy in some way how disturbed I can get from watching cynical movies about the worst of humanity, like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Speaking of which, I knew I recognized that blue guy in Guardians of the Galaxy! Damn Michael Rooker, you typecast. Anyway, I think the director of Nymphomaniac is also the director of Anti-Christ, which I saw Oancitizen/Kyle Kalgren do a review of a while back, so the cynicism doesn't surprise me. Nor does the worst of humanity being showcased. I mean, come on. Shia LeBouef is in that movie. It's a bit hard to not do that.

I still have yet to watch anything but part of the very first episode of classic Doctor Who, though both old and new series are in my Netflix Watch List.

Is the moon crying blood? That picture kind of reminds me of both Majora's Mask, because of the moon, and Twilight Princess, because of what I am guessing is a wolf in the van?

They're good movies so long as you can stomach the cynicism,Joe. Even LeBouef does a rather outstanding job as Joe's sleazy BF/boss!

Honestly the moon's inclusion was simply to give the piece a surreal horror/mystery motif but now you bring it up yeah, it does have that Majora's mask vibe! As for Dwayne? When I drew him as a wolf I was simply trying to drive home the Scooby homage and since he was already a werewolf it worked out well!

Oh God, LeBouef is a guy named Joe's boyfriend. I'm not a fan of this. Not at all. lol

Ha ha!  That's a funny picture.

I only watch classy things, like Rifftrax making fun of the 1998 Godzilla movie. :)

(That's what I did tonight).

New blog coming this weekend.  It's about Tekken.

Ah,good ol Tekken! I'll probably chime in with some commentary though I have not been fortunate enough to play Tekken Tag 2,Cary.

Yes I hope you get to read my Tekken blog because I really think you'd have some good knowledge and insights.  More than I would anyway.

Can you guess who my favorite Tekken character is? :)

I'm familiar with Capaldi on In The Loop. On that show, he's as foul-mouthed as Ian McShane was on Deadwood.

It's a Lars Von Trier film, man. A director who's a broken man that makes films about broken people. I still want to see those films. Put up a spoiler tag next time, please?

It says "some spoilers" in the title. I tried to be clear. Yell

I stand corrected. Apologies, sir.

Would love to see a game using your art.

I used some art of mine as battlers in my first rpg. Er, maybe I'll be able to use more art in a future project. Wink

great pic man!

Yeah, Lars Von Trier movies are very down on human beings.  I gave up on that director a long time ago.

Apparentely Lars has a reputation I should know about. This is my first time hearing about the guy. Foot in Mouth

Every time I see Peter Capaldi, I think of the "Fires of Pompeii" episode.

Yeah,he's actually guessed starred in Doctor who before being the doctor twice I think. lol. Supposedely there's a buried subplot in there.

I've been wanting to see Nymphomaniac, so now that it's on Netflix I'll probably watch it sometime soon.  Having already seen a great many of Lars Von Trier's movies (Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, Melancholia, etc) I already kind of know what to expect.  They are not always the easiest movies to watch, but I usually enjoy them for what they are.  They are defintely not for everyone, and I can only watch them when I am in a certain mood. The guy certainly does have a cynical and pessimistic view of humanity

This was also my first introduction to the guy so I probably was not prepared for his brand of cynicism going in. I did not mean to spoil anything which is why "some spoilers" was in the title. I guess Von trier is famous but I honestly never knew much about him. Not my cup of tea personally but I can still acknowledge the film-work and acting in his movies tend to be pretty good.

I need to catch up with Doctor Who so badly.

As many described above, that's Lars Von Trier for ya. I haven't seen his films (i'm certainly interested in watching them), but from what has been described by others, he's a very dark filmmaker.

Though now that you mention that comment of media showing humanity in a cynical way, I kinda want to share my own opinion.

I just find "showing the dark" all the time to come off as pessimistic and pretentious. I actually was around for the first wave of "shock films",aka movies that delibertely had hopeless and cynical premises. Needless to say, as an art student at the time I got burnt out on that kind of stuff rather quickly. I'm not saying it's "wrong" but it's just not an approach that jives with me. (And I do not consider it "honest" because it's only showing the bad of humanity when there is good in humanity too)

Even though my knowledge of Doctor Who is only of the new stuff, I think it's refreshing to go with an older actor to play the Doctor, I can hardly wait to see what's in store.

It is the return of the 70s for Doctor Who, and I couldnt be more excited.

After watching Matt Smith's final apperance I'll probably stop watching Doctor Who from here on out. Don't care much for the new guy for the exact same reasons that you meantioned, I wasn't a big fan of Hartnell and Troughton. Plus Peter Capaldi was already in a Doctor Who episode as a Roman in the fires of pompeii, that itself is a big no-no after what happened in classic Doctor Who.

I saw that being offered as a suggestion on my netflix awhile back. not sure why but I made sure to say no and give it one star so that others like it don't get suggested again. took them awhile to remove the gay/lesbian option in my searches.
