Game Club: Demon's Souls, 1-2

Oh damn do I love some intense battles!

To start, the Red Dragon wasn’t too intense. After about 100 arrows, it fell with ease and little to no challenge whatsoever. The rest of the bridge though? Yeah, it was tough. Shooting arrows while dodging crossbow bolts, it was actually quite intense, yet very testing on my patience. After I cleared the top though, I went down yonder and cleared out everything that was underneath, simply because Ostrava was stuck yet again. He’s such a whiner.

How someone as tank-ish as he is gets stuck constantly is well beyond me…

The kicker though in this level was the Tower Knight.

Naturally, I cleared the archers with little to no difficulty, but the Tower Knight himself was no joke for some reason. Sure, I could’ve taken quick some cheap pop shots from above with my bow, but that’s not how I roll. I instead opted to dodge, dip, dive, duck, and dodge around his attacks and shield bashes. I remembered this battle being much easier, but I think the necessity for a ‘clear shot’ bolstered the difficulty a bit. Seeing how tough it was to hit his head while locked on, I inevitably decided to shoot out his ankles then pierce his head with a dozen arrows when he was down.

Which brings up an interesting point in which I just recently noticed; shooting arrows doesn’t drain your stamina in Demon’s Souls! It’s rather nice considering how often I’m dodging out of the way of everything.

But that’s it! 1-2 is cleared, and I’m on to 2-1 next. I dabbled a bit in there, but very little. Actually, I wouldn’t even call it a dabble as much as a quick visit to grab some Hardstone Shards and level my bow a bit back within the Nexus.

One more thing though…
Shall we look in to speeding this playthrough up a wee bit? By my calculations, one level per week will take us over sixteen weeks to complete. Perhaps we should look into completing two ‘areas’ per week? Your call!

Oh shit, ONE more thing: any ideas on what to play next?

I really dig the sheer size of the Tower Knight in that battle.  I used to think the Ice Giant battle in Lords Of Shadow was big...but that Tower Knight shits on the Ice Giant.

For the next game, I think we should do one of the following:

-Chrono Trigger

-Earthbound

-Metal Gear Solid

-some other game that we can finish in 20 hours or less...preferably a 10-15 hour game

Yeah, I was pondering a shorter game as well.

Unfortunately, I have neither of those that you just listed at my disposal. I'm definitely not opposed to MGS though. I wonder if I can nab it on my Vita?

*edit*
It's only available on PSP/PS3 to download.

I'm pretty sure you can.  It plays nicely on my PSP.....for the sweet sum of 9.99 it can indeed be yours from PSN!!

Plus I've never played past the first 15 minutes, so it'd be a real treat for me to play through this with all the Game Club Comrades

I'm also pondering the idea of a game that could be completely cross-platformed though as well.. I think MGS is only on Sony and respected handhelds, whereas MGS2 and 3 are also on the 360 through the HD collection.

ive yet to play through either of those 2, and would be happy with them as well.

I'm thinking MGS3 is long(ish), but I've also heard it was the best.. And a prequel too if I'm correct. Could be the way to go

Two things.  Yes, MGS3 is amazing.

Apparently you should be able to transfer MGS to the Vita from a PS3.

Oh nice find Transmet!

I was just looking around on PSN from my work computer and saw that MGS1 was slated to download only for PS3/PSP. It didn't mention the Vita.

I've never bothered to kill the dragon in this stage. I just took the low road through the bridge and then rush the crossbow dudes in the end. You actually have a lot of breathing room in that last part of the bridge to maneuver, the fire wont get you. The Tower Knight is very intimidating at first. I do a short sprint around the arena and take out the snipers first. Then ankles and face. rinse. repeat. ankles, face. rinse. repeat.

As for progress, I'm already through much of world 3 and 4. I'm going to farm and grind a bit before doing the awful world 5, then final boss.

I think with PSOne games on PSN, you have to download to PS3 first, then plug in PSP or Vita to transfer game.

I'm all in for MGS1. I think it's a few hours long. Too bad there is no HD remake of it.

We can do MGS1, no problem!

Afterwards, we should hit up something that's multi-platform though so we can have some people with Xbox's join in!

After MGS1, I recommend we do a horror type game for October. Dead Space, F.E.A.R. or a Resident Evil game? RE4 or 5 maybe 6? Maybe find a cheap indie game we can all get easily. I kind of want to try out that Silent Hill Vita game though.

I'm certain I sent you 3 other messages saying this, but...

I just picked up Silent Hill: Book of Memories. Actually, I probably picked it up right before you mentioned it here. It's not great, but not bad either. I'm sure it would be much less monotonous if it was played in co-op.

Speaking of...
I was pondering the idea for the next Game Club game, and the Metal Gear Solid idea keeps popping up, which is fine, but perhaps for the next game after MGS (if it's selected), we can look in to a co-op game and branch off in to different teams? Or if it's a 4 player game and we have 4 people, perhaps we can do a 4-player smash-up?

Just a thought, but I'm digging it!

I bought that Silent Hill vita game. It was on my backlog, and I got it really cheap.

Apart from shooters, what are good 4+ player coop games on console? I'm down for a team smack down! Maybe try a couple of different coop games for that month and see what sticks?  Coop games month!

I suggest putting out a blog post for coop suggestions. I'll volunteer for coop so you at least have one person. Now we just need 2 more.Cool

What games did you have in mind?

Well we can split off in to teams of two and try something like Double Dragon Neon (it's short and quick).

Or all get together and try Pay Day 2 for a bit (which was free on PS+ a while back) or Dragon's Crown.

Whatever floats our boats reall

Actually, you could just spin off this co-op idea into its own thing seperate from gameclub. The gameclub can be used for analyzing games with interesting stories, gameplay, etc. The Co-op is just a social hangout type thing. You don't need to wait until October or blog about it necessarily.

It's no biggy!

I'm just looking ahead for longevity

I am still stuck on this guy...I may have to turn to arrows as well because my dodging is not the greatest out there lol

Dodge, dip, dive, duck, and dodge!

You'll get the hang of it at some point Ashley, just don't give up!

Haha, not giving up just put it aside for now because it made me sad to die so many times in such a short time.

Soul arrows from up top make it much, much easier. You can use the building structure to avoid his attacks and pop out of cover when his guard is down for an easy hit. It takes a little while, but he goes down without much effort.

I missed it this week with all my Xbox 360 issues and having to make up for lost time playing co-op EDF 2025 all day. I'll be back in with a new character next week and see if I can even make it past 1-1. I'll consider that a huge accomplishment for me.

Demon's Souls is for PS3.

You're not thinking of Dark Souls are you?

KnightDriver

08/21/2014 at 10:52 AM

It's confusing isn't it. I've got both systems up and running at the same time. Only one head though. Wish I had three like a Tryclyde. Then I could've played Demon's Souls while playing EDF 2025 and then hooked up my Wii too and played Muramasa Demon Blade. F'n a that would be cool!

Upstairs in my Man-Cave, I have an AV Hub that allows me to have every console of mine connected at once, and I can switch settings with the press of a button. Essentially, I have everything from NES to PS3/360/Wii hooked up on the same TV all at the same time.

Complete...
Glory...

Ah yeah. I'd love to do that too.

i wonder if archers are the fps equivelant of scope sucking humps that use snipers weapons than in your face shotguns...

I wish it were that easy..
Archers in Souls games though are the equivilent of mosquitos trying to kill a T-Rex though
