New Targets, Same Old Bullshit

If you are one of the fortunate souls to not know about any of the toxicity which took place in gaming over the past two weeks, I envy you. Don't look it up unless you want to hate the internet forever, instead just know that one of the results is a petition to shut down Steam for one hour because of sexism.

Now, one hour is not bad at all. The question, however, is why should we all get punished for some shit another asshole said? I'm horrified by what happened, but that does not changed that I have done nothing wrong. Just because a few people are doing the wrong thing does not mean everyone else should be punished.

Just like when Ubisoft put DRM in games because people were pirating games. Or when Microsoft wanted to put the used game market under their terms instead of the free market's. Sure, right now it's just an hour. Even though many people have limited enough gaming time as is, which should be respected. But what if it's successful and tried again for longer? Even if it's a small retribution, punishment should never be targeted at innocent bystanders.

The reason I bring this up is because I have seen the pro-feminism side support this. And I think that putting a stop to sexual harrassment and inequality is a lot more important than video games. But there is a right way and wrong way to do everything. And this is the wrong way.

I thank the rock I live under that I missed what you speak of. But I think I might have an idea of what's been going on from reading up on Ben's blog. I hope I'm wrong becasue for that situation to have come to this. Yikes. This is getting out of hand.

yeah it's like all out war.  I haven't been paying so much attention lately, but there's a lot of shit on twitter that's unavoidable.  Luckily, I follow mostly sane people.

My Twitter account has lain dormant for years. I should probably delete it, because I hate Twitter. It's mostly a cesspool of quasi-celebrities, grandstanding politicians, and keyboard sociopaths.

yeah i know it's pretty bad.  but I like the people I follow.  I only follow like 90 people.

I honestly feel like the gaming/internet community has gotten out of hand. Not just this feminism thing, but there is also this swatting thing that also happened this week and a lot of people are just as angry about this. I think at a certain point, gamers need to grow up and stop acting like idiots. I know it was a few individuals that are causing problems and they don't represent all of us, and no, just because you criticize the idiots doesn't automatically make you a feminist either. Why do I bother? The internet is not the best place to have a thoughtful discussion. I don't care honestly. I hope the bad guys are prosecuted and arrested.

Thats why I love Pixlbit. We respect each other's opinions and want discussions, not circle jerks of how right we are

Fuck this whole topic. Seriously. I don't care if you don't like Anita or Zoe Quinn, but they have a right to their own safety, and making them feel so scared that they need to vacate their own home kind of makes you a pathetic fucking psychopath. Whatever Zoe Quinn did isn't worse this harrassment, and it certainly isn't so bad that you need to target and harrass those who are merely showing support of this. Fucking die already you pathetic low life cunts. Kill yourself, because if you act like this, no one can honestly say they love you you fucks.

No, this isn't a real reason to take down steam, and even if it were, it's not going to do anything. The kind of people who did this would probably try to take Steam offline to piss people off anyway. They're probably laughing their asses off at this shit.

At first I thought this was directed at me, then I saw the real targets at the end. I don't like either of them, but that's because of the shady stuff both does, not because they have opinions or visions for gaming I disagree with. Threatening their personal safety is just fucked up

Haha, if it were aimed at you, it would have been a touch more tactful.

The mainstream press is catching wind of this maelstrom, and boyoboy, it ain't pretty.

I was thinking more monkeys. No one thinks, they just throw shit.

I hadn't heard anything about this, but I'd definitely be annoyed if I couldn't get on Steam for this reason. It would just make me annoyed at one side and not much else. Even though the other side needs to be put in prison, but y'know, do that before limiting access to the games I payed for. I didn't do shit.

Yep, but the people on the other side calling everyone misogynists aren't helping. Call someone stat long enough and they'll believe it, only making them worse.

Even with all the activity I've been seeing around Tumblr, I just don't care for this issue with Zoe Quinn and all the Twitter bullshit and gaming journalism. Too much drama and I just want to play games in peace. Atleast something worthwhile is seeing the flaws of popular gaming journalism and may even make people think twice on trusting sites like Kotaku.

Kotaku's been needed to go down a peg for a long, long time. I think every major game site will be hurt sooner rather than later

That reminds me of the way teachers in my Middle School would keep the whole class after school for the actions of a few. It was stupid then, and it's even dumber to do it on the Internet. This whole situation is a total mess, but this is just about the worst way of going about it. All it does is anger people needlessly.

What a loser sub-cult we have with this hobby. I'm beginning to believe few among the audience or press even have the intelligence to speak fluently about a medium as complex as video games, so we get this ancillary garbage instead.  We are seeing the chickens come home to roost with the people involved in this kind of nonsense. This may be the last time I comment on anything that has nothing to do with design, development, history, or the market/sales.

It's the result of anonymity.

I heard a little bit of this situation but I didn't know it went as far as trying to slow down Steam. Yeah let's punish the folks who had nothing to do with the whole situation. I agree with KnightDriver in that a lot of folks hide behind anonymity and go overboard with their comments. Its crazy, and the normal folks who have nothing to do with it get punished. WTH!
