A One-Night Stand with Destiny

Destiny is all the rage these days. I know we have a number of folks here on Pixlbit who are playing it. My wife was particularly intrigued and so we picked it up from Redbox tonight to see what it was like. And it seems like a really cool game. Very pretty, even on old hardware (PS3 in this case), and the feel of the gameplay is really good. But for our situation there is one glaring flaw: NO LOCAL MULTIPLAYER. Perhaps this wrinkle was common knowledge but neither of us had heard about it and surely the folks at Bungie threw in all the options. After all, their Halo games support local, LAN, and online multiplayer. Why should Destiny be different?

Well it is Frown

Destiny no split screen

So tomorrow I'll take it back to Redbox and move on. I'll probably pick up a copy someday but right now I have enough single-player games to work through. Of course, if Bungie listens to the fan outcry (a quick internet search proves we're not alone in our displeasure) and patches in local co-op,  then we'll be diving back in much sooner. I don't doubt that for a minute. Here's hoping.

It's an MMO thing. They never support local multiplayer. Also, the reason people on PC aren't getting this: If you've played an MMO before, you'll realise how much of a hack job this really is.

It's a freaking FPS and I don't see any reason why they can't. Screw MMO conventions.

I just wonder if you can play it with less than four people. It seems that you have to form teams to get through this game. I've got one buddy who'll play it but that's about it.

I don't know. I stopped once I got to the part where I'd need to team up with people lol

The whole online-only thing is a turn-off for me as well ... not that it matters, since I can't play it anyway, but y'know.

But you're offended in principle. Take that, Bungie!

i get a feeling that not a whole whole lot of people are going to stick with Destiny.

Maybe not. Guess we'll have to see how much they support it.

My friend is getting a Destiny tattoo already.

Holy cow! That seems a bit premature. Hopefully the game doesn't end up letting him down lol

He wants the symbol of the Titan on his arm. He's just gonzo for the game demanding me to play it every night at work. I just don't want to spend money right now on games. I just blew a bunch upgrading my PS3 and Xbox 360.

you might want to wait a bit longer then. I've read and heard from others that there is hardly any story when it comes to the single player aspect. It's bad enough that the single player mode is online only but this coming from Bungie, who's made games with great single player content, is really dissapointing.

My one bro out east likes it because he says it feels like Phantasy Star Online yet my coworker here is really bummed how it has hardly any story and the enemies keep respawning unlike an usual MMO when you clear an area it stays clear.

The thing about Bungie's games up to this point—including Marathon—is that you can play all of their single-player content co-op. That's why we assumed we'd be able to. It's a Bungie game. Needless to say, we were very disappointed.

Going completely off topic, I realized the other day that I haven't kept up with RWBY at all. A quick internet search revealed that they're, like, seven episodes into "vol 2." Have you watched these? Wikipedia lists the episode lengths and they're all in the low teens (of minutes, that is) and that sounds great. The short length of the episodes was one of my biggest peeves about that first season. Now I just need time to watch them Undecided

yeah. That was a real bummer with Destiny. It's one of the reasons why I decided I probably won't buy it. Now if it's F2P later down the road...

I have kept up with RWBY season 2 and for the most part it has come a long way to redeem itself after the complete dissapointment that was the Vol 1 finale. They've done a number of improvements to the series with longer episodes, fully animated people in the world instead of just black silloutes and deeper character development for most of the main characters.

They'd done their best to make Weiss less of a ice queen and explore more deeply into the team dynamics of the teams themselves as either teh whole team or person to person interactions. Remember the one scene were Ruby talks to Jaunce about his problem with cardin winchester. More stuff like that but in deeper dtetail with individual characters. The talk that Yang has with Blake was excellently done.

their also doing more with trying to show the "coming darkness" slowing starting to encroach on the kingdoms. The series new theme song seems to tell this very well.

So far the series hasn't disapointed and has been able to deliver some real memorable moments. But at the same time there are some odd changes done that I find rather odd. The girls school uniform skirts seem to be shorter now. O_o

Give RWBY season 2 a try when you can. (episode one can be summed up in three words: EPIC. FOOD. FIGHT.) so far they have been a step up from last season though there are some graphics hiccups every now and then. I'd have reviewed them like my "RWBY Tuesday" feature but I'm not sure there is enough insterest. Plus we are already up to episode 8.

I suppose I was your main—and sometimes only—commentor on those reviews. They were good! But also must have been a lot of work, so I can't blame you for not carrying on. I'll definitely watch those when I get a chance. I really enjoyed the first season, terrible finale notwithstanding.

Actually they were not a whole lot of work. They came about quite easily, morso when I learned how to screen capture screen shots of the specific episodes. What really has me on the fense is the way in how I handle the RWBY Tuesday write ups. I don't think I'm a good reviewer really. it's why you don't see me do user reviews of games. I don't think I have what it takes to do the review write. Even now as I look at the last two RWBY Tuesday write ups I completely SAVAGED the RWBY series. I don't think I could post them like they are with some major re-writes. Though i have had some excellent commenters to the RWBY Tuesday blogs (on both here and IGN) I don't think i was doing commenters enough justice with this blog series.

I'm still on the fense so we'll see. Plus it doesn't help i'm behind on the write ups AND there's the RWBY sublimental series running right now. Glad you enjoyed the write ups even if I didn't think they met review standards.

I was a little annoyed to find out that the most social component of games was not in Destiny...  especially since they talked about how it was supposed to be a social experience.

The moment-to-moment gameplay is great but I've heard that the game beyond that has something of an identity crisis. Tries to be everything to everybody and doesn't commit fully to anything Undecided
