So my editor-in-chief at the university newspaper I do the Opinions page for (http://thepinelog.com) recently suggested the staff get a capture card and start doing let's plays. A lot of staff members seem to be on board. I'm excited.

My hope though, is the suggestion to do dance games (I know who probably suggested it) is put off until ... much later. Not cause I'd be embarrassed really. I dance like a jackass on purpose in public all the time. I've gotten over the fact I suck at dancing since high school ended for me six years ago and have embraced doing silly dances for the entertainment of others at my expense. I just ... don't really like dancing games all that much. I kinda like sitting. And eating. And thank God I'm still 162, cause given my sedentary lifestyle and eating habits since I said "fuck it" in summer, I should probably be a lot worse off.

Do you guys watch Let's Plays and what do you watch them for? Personally, I go for the ones that are just meant to be funny, and pay more attention to the commentary than the game itself most often. But I can't handle anything trying too hard, like older videos I've seen of PewdiePie, so I pretty much watch Game Grumps exclusively and stop watching when it's not funny. I also watch Let's Plays to see what certain games look like. I used to watch ClementJ462 (or whatever his username is) but got a bit bored with his channel. I do like that he plays Mega Man and Sonic games though and I'd like to see more of his videos just so I can watch how the newer Sonics look.

So let me know how you feel about let's plays and what you like or don't like about them etc. I'll get in the chief's ear if there are any good suggestions, but mostly I'm just curious.

I wonder if well get retsupuraed ...

oh that might be fun for you man.  I've considered doing this for lesser known PC games, but it's not really my style.  But it might be a lot of fun!

I'd have more fun doing it with other people I get along with and the staff is pretty cool. I'm hoping this happens.

Let's Plays are great to watch. I personally go for both informative (like ClementJ), just fo hilarity (The Runaway Guys) or a combination of both (Chuggaaconroy, a member of the second group here). I think as long as they entertain the viewer while providing information of the game, it's all fine.

Entertain and inform? That's too much pressure. I'll just make a channel where a cat plays video games instead.

Be glad you didn't say that on the Something Awful forums Tongue Out

I don't know if I'd ever watch a Let's Play of a dance game.  But then, i'd rather just play games.

I've been watching videos of games a lot just to see if I want to play them, or find out how the heck anyone can beat such a difficult game. Last time I looked at a gameplay video though, I wanted less chatter and more gaming. One guy took like three minutes just to create a character in a pc rpg because he was constantly talking about the history of the game and strategy. I was like, "JUST PLAY THE DAMN GAME!".

However, I really enjoyed watching The Spoony One doing an Ultima retrospective. For a long game like that, it's nice to have someone rip through it and give you the highlights as well as be funny as heck (http://spoonyexperiment.com/game-reviews/ultima-retrospective/ ).

Oh and one more thing for intros to Let's Play programs. Make them SHORT. Some guys got this incredibly long intro. It's so self indulgent. No one wants to see that long intro over and over again.

Yeah, I like the Game Grumps intros. They add a sense of familiarity, but are really short and they pretty much just jump right in after the intro.

Do Dance Dance Revolution! I've always wanted to do taht myself but teh wife wishes not for me to expose myself to the internet too much.

I watch some let's plays every now and then. Mostly when they are funny. the one's I watched the most was be the Spoony One's let's plays of Phantasmagoria 2 and SWAT 4. Phan 2 started out slow but was hilarious at the end. SWAT 4 he was able to get a running gag going when his character got in the way of another SWAT officer which prompted the NPC response that always sets Spoony off in a nerd rage.

Maybe we'll play DDR with a controller, just to be difficult about it.

Or better yet. get Playstation Home, make an avatar, visit the Konami Penthouse and play the DDR Dance game there. You have no choice but to play with the controller. Plus it's really hard given the delay of the game, your avatar and the online connection. That way you can dance while at the same time not dance. It's brilllaint!

I haven't heard of Let's Play, but the it sounds like it could be fun especially with the rest of the staff. As for the Dancing games, you really don't do much with your arms unless you're playing the games on the Wii. Then you can do what I do and play while sitting in a chair and just moving your arms.

Oh, Dance Central makes you do a bit with your arms.

Anyway, here's an example of a Let's Play:
