Final Fantasy 10 was a direct prequel to 7? Say What?

I always thought FF games were completely seperate from each other except for direct sequels and spin-offs, but I never even considered that 7 & 10 were related, with the time travel and all (actually there is a bit of time travel in both). Has anyone else heard of this? This is the first time I hear about it and I'm actually quite blown away by it. Even if it isn't true, the evidence is pretty strong. I'd like to think they are connected. Interesting... interesting.

Shinra from FFX is an ancestor of the people who found Shinra Inc. in FF7. Shinra in FFX researches ways to use the power of the planet to use them as energy (you find this out in an optional cut-scene which otherwise has absolutely nothing to do with the game/world of FFX itself). This is exactly what FF7 Shinra is doing, harvesting the planets energy. I forgot the name of the energy in FFX, it's the farplane or something? Everytime you kill monsters in FFX they die and you see those green "fireflies" returning to the farplane. Tidus is made of it (and Auron). In FF7 this exact thing is called Mako and the farplane is the lifestream. Spheres in FFX and Materia in FF7 are both made from lifestream/farplane energy. The evidence is there, there's tons of it. Just play both games over again and keep the basic principles of how the energy of the planet works in mind. Start with FFX.

Correction Update: FF10 took place before 7.
When I read the connections between games I was focusing on them sharing the same universe and timeline, since FF10 was made after FF7 techinically it is a sequel, but actually FF10 took place before the events of FF7.

Yup, I remember reading about this a while back. Apparently it's actually canonical material, since the creators confirmed it in some guidebook that was only released in Japan. Go figure.

You would think with so many know-it-all FF fans that this would be more common knowledge, but I had never even heard of this. I'm familiar with connections between FF12 and Vagrant Story, but never this? Hmm. Go figure. I feel like replaying 7 & 10 now and look for connections. This gonna be good!

I think you mean direct prequel. But yeah, i've heard of this too before and Britt also confirmed of it being posible canon.

Ity truely shocks me how times have changed. I remember doing the mission at the brothel in thief*2014* and when you peaked into the holes in the wall you saw some really explicit things. When even in japan they didnt show what cloud saw back then,lol. This def shocks me and sadly I prolly would never have figured this out. I played ff10 but not 7. People bite my nerves about it so that pushed me from playing it.

I think this happened with FF 10 and 12. SE wanted to make the games more appealing to teens, so they got very anime and PG. This was one of the reasons that the director for FF12 left Square and Vaan and Penelo were made the lead characters when they weren't going to be in the game at all.

But technically Tidus is "Dead", he isn't really alive let alone real just an imperfect memory to my understanding, one of the reasons why no one mentions him by name.

X is a prequel.

To be fair, the connection is only made in a Japanese game journal and cut scene in X-2 where an excavation team is trying to extract Matera or whatever it's called to use as energy but they can't until the far future. If I remember anything about 10-2, those materia orbs you hunted contained visions of the future, thus they were able to see the use of "materia" in the future. There are a lot of connections to the world besides this.
