Since last Friday I’ve only managed to play the demo of Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS two times, the second being a moment before writing this blog. Even though Little Mac isn’t playable in this demo I did have a good time with Mega Man despite his controls feel different from what I played in the last three Smash Bros. games. While I enjoyed myself I did have some issues with the controls in general. I hope the configuration menu will have a few things:
- Disabling jump by the circle pad. Normally this is all too common in every fighting game ever made but since one of the first games I’ve ever played was a Mario title all I can say is that pressing up to jump is really fucked up. Usually this option is available in the Smash Bros. games so this one won’t be much of a worry.
- A Smash button. I had no problem with charging a Smash move in these games but I actually prefer to have a Smash button so I can quickly pull off a few moves without the worry of screwing up because I wasn’t still or something of the like. Besides, who needs TWO jump buttons, aside classic Cave Story for the DS?
- Able to switch between the circle pad and d-pad. Now Smash Bros. always used the stick for movement and I have no actual problems with using the circle pad if I have to. Though I doubt they’ll give you the option but since I had some issues with circle pad on Street Fighter IV 3D Edition I figure it would be nice to have the option.
That’s about it for Smash Bros. for the 3DS.
As for the “technophile” part of the title, here’s a little story from a Sunday afternoon after my shift. I’m sure many of you have mothers that have some issues with their computers and/or Kindles and you’re the tech support in the household. Now I will admit I’m not like one of those hipsters that have drawers of memory sticks and hard drives (though I did at one point but they were really outdated) that talk techno-speak but I will say that my skills are at least well into the advance level.
So her issue was getting a full game on her Kindle: she tried to buy the game through the purchase button on the main menu but every time she tried the game stops trying to connect to the appstore and just gives an error popup. After messing about with the Kindle (rebooting, reinstalling the game) I decided to do actually try to buy the full game outside the menu. So I went onto Amazon, signed in to her account, purchased the full game, refreshed the app library on the kindle, and installed it from there.
Now this was a simple problem to solve but I wanted to share this story because it’s moments like that where one of my parents appreciates my skills with tech actually helps my esteem a little. I work at a McDonald’s even after getting my associates degree so my view about my work life has been a bit depressing if I look at it long enough. It also doesn’t help that one of my instructors from the college I finished my Computer Application program actually gets breakfast at the store I work at. But moments like that actually helps my ego. Not only do I actually feel like a techie at home but some of my co-workers actually recognize my skills when I get something to work when they try to get something to stop acting up. So even though I’m stuck at my job at least I know I can hold a candle to my own intelligence and skills.
