Game Review Overload

Hey folks, are you ready for another batch of game reviews to read?  Well you’d better get used to it; because with Christmas coming up, I’ll be doing lots more game reviews for a while.  Anyway, I hope you do get a chance to click on the links and read my reviews and maybe even post a comment or two.  I’d appreciate it.  I know there are a bit more iPad games in this batch, but keep in mind that I was on vacation to Disney World in between posting these reviews.  But I promise my next batch will have more console stuff.  One tough thing about reviewing games this time of year is that it’s harder to play the games I want, like Hyrule Warriors and Smash Bros., because I have to review other things.  But I’m not complaining.  People who get to write game reviews semi-professionally like this have NO RIGHT to complain!  So anyway, let’s get on to the reviews!

Cooking Mama 5: Bon Appetit! (3DS)

Can you believe there has been five of these games?  More if you count the spinoffs and Wii titles!  I actually like the Cooking Mama series, though.  I don’t know why.  I like reviewing them because they’re really kids’ games at heart.  My one complaint is that it’s just more of the same.  But since these are kids’ games and there will always be a new generation of youngsters to experience these titles like never before, I guess it’s OK if it’s just more of the same.  Kind of like Pokemon.

BlazBlue ClonePhantasma (3DS)

This is a silly take on BlazBlue with chibi characters and simpler arcade style arena fighting gameplay.  It’s a sequel to the DSiWare game BlayzBloo.  It would be pretty fun if it weren’t for the last boss character, which is just a giant version of your rival.  They’re nearly impossible to beat.  I couldn’t do it, and it’s a shame because the rest of the game is so easy.  Plus, my favorite BlazBlue character isn’t in this game.  Can you guess who it is?  I’ll give you a hint if you need it (you’re not being very observant, though).  OK here’s the hint: even though my favorite character isn’t in this game, her panda hairpiece is one of the power-ups you can pick up.  Guess in the comments section!

Super Monkey Ball Bounce (iPad)

It’s really just Peggle with Monkey Ball characters thrown in.  Kind of reminds me of Pachinko games, which means it’s not that interesting.  Remember Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 on the GameCube?  Those were such awesome games, some of the best for that console.  And the mini-games were great, too.  I never felt the need to buy a bowling game for the GameCube because Monkey Bowling was so good.  Monkey Target was great, too.  Can you guess the monkey character I always used?  It’s a shame that future Monkey Ball titles have not been near as good.  What happened, SEGA?

Thomas Was Alone (iPad)

I had heard a lot of folks talking about this game a while back, so when I got the opportunity to review it for iPad; I wanted to give it a try.  I don’t see what the big deal is, though.  It’s just a bunch of squares with different jumping abilities doing the same jumping puzzles over and over.  I did like the narration, though.  I hear the guy who did that even won an award for it.  Otherwise, though, I just didn’t ‘get’ this game I suppose.

Light in the Dark (iPad)

This is a really clever puzzler I played at PAX that features puzzles involving light and shadow, as well as mixing different colors of light.  The characters look suspiciously like the ones in Cut the Rope, though.

Fallin Love (iPad)

Speaking of squares, in this game you’re a guy square who falls in love with a girl square, but she only dates guys who wear the clothes she likes.  So in the game you tilt your tablet to move the guy square around a maze to get the outfit she likes and head for the exit.  It’s a neat puzzler, but hard to twist and turn the mazes if you have a bulkier device like an iPad.  I think it probably works better with something smaller, like a phone.

BoxPop (iPad)

In this game you try to clear out as many squares as you can from a playfield, but you can only move in directions like a knight on a chessboard (two squares up, and then one left or right).  If you like chess strategy games, you might enjoy this one.

Gummy Drop (iPad)

And last is yet another Candy Crush clone.  I swear I need to stop reviewing these things.  Back when I was writing for The Dallas Morning News, there was a time when Deer Hunter games were very popular.  So my editor sent me every single one to review.  I finally had to tell him to stop sending them to me because they were practically all the same game.  And I hated having to tell him that, too, because I don’t like to say ‘no’ to a game reviewing opportunity.  I may have to do that again with these Candy Crush clones, though.

Stay Tuned!

And that’s all for now!  Thanks for reading my reviews and posting comments.  I really do appreciate it.  Hopefully I’ll be able to find enough time soon to play more Hyrule Warriors and stuff.  Speaking of which, the other night I had a funny dream about Hyrule Warriors.  Let me know if you want to hear about it in the comments section, and I’ll tell you about it in the reply.  Next time on my blog, I’m going to talk about the silly characters in a fighting game I’m reviewing right now called Arcana Heart 3: LOVE MAX!!!!!  Later!  --Cary

i would love to hear about the dream.  I had a dream about that new show Gotham the other night.  Can't remember it very well though.

OK I'll tell you my dream about Hyrule Warriors.

In the dream I was building Princess Zelda a castle.  Except the weird thing is I was building it out of giant interlocking blocks and panels.  Kind of like giant LEGO, but more like those castle playhouses you build for little kids.  But I was hefting these huge stones and walls and turrets over my head and setting them into place.  I thought I was either really strong or Zelda was making her caslte out of plastic.

At one point, I decided Zelda needed a waterslide spiraling down one of her turrets.  So I somehow built that.  But then, Zelda's guardian Impa rushed over and bellowed in my face, "How DARE you make a mockery of Zelda's castle!  That goes against all regulations!  You WILL tear down that slide right now!"  But then Princess Zelda poked her head out of the window and said, "What's the commotion about?  Oh, nice waterslide, Cary!  I love it!"  I then turned to Impa and shrugged, and she GLARED at me.  If looks could kill, I would be dead.  So I decided that for the rest of the day, I would build the castle as far away from Impa as I could.

So I worked all day and got really tired.  In Skyward Sword, Link can sleep in any bed he comes across, so when I saw a bed I just fell right to sleep on it.  Yes, I spent most of my Zelda dream sleeping!  But at one point, I thougth to myself, "Whose bed am I in?  Would they get mad?  Is this Zelda's bed?  Or even worse, is this Impa's bed?  She was already sore at me today, I'd better try and wake myself up so I can find out what bed I'm in!"  So I worked so hard at trying to wake myself up, that I ended waking myself up in real life!  And that's my Hyrule Warriors dream!  --Cary

Yeah I always hate it when I dream I'm in an exciting place, and what do I decide to do in my dream in that place?  Sleep.

I'm reading Freud's Interpretation of Dreams right now and I know right away what he'd say about building turrets and water slides.

Ew.  No, no, no, no, no.  Castles are supposed to have turrets and waterslides are fun.  That's all that they meant in this dream.  The only thing you can interpret from my dream is that I played too much Hyrule Warriors before going to bed, and my brain is messed up from watching too many 80's cartoons as a kid. :)

Ha ha! That's Freud for ya. Always taking an uncomfortable approach to psychoanalysis. I'm finding though that he's not just all about what he's famous for, but he has some interesting ideas about dreams relating to childhood and to everday anxieties and experiences. I wonder what Impa means in your dream?

Cary Woodham

I like Impa in Hyrule Warriors because she's a strong and tough female character.  I guess she just got mad at me in my dream because I built a silly waterslide that's probably a security hazard and she has to worry about stuff like that being the Captain of the guards and all.

One thing I did not tell you about my dream was that when Zelda poked out the window, she was wearing a nightgown.  I chose to omit that detail knowing people like YOU would interpret that as something else other than 'she woke up from a nap.' :)

But really, most of the dream was just me building a castle and sleeping in a bed.  I work hard and sleep hard, even when I'm dreaming! :)

Interesting. Frued says the one thing you omit when retelling a dream is the key to the dream. I'm not saying that means it's something salacious, although it could be, just important in some way.

I hope I'm not bugging you too much with this Freudian analysis, which has become a bit of joke in modern times (remember the SNL skit with Dan Aykroyd and Laraine Newman?), I just like to apply what I'm reading and see is true or not true.

Cary Woodham

That was such a small part of the dream, though.  I think I'm going to go back in time and put some duct tape over Freud's mouth.

Ha ha! I'm sorry I brought it up.

Nah, it's OK.  I just don't want you thinking I'm a weirdo.  Although it may be too late for that. :)

I've always had very weird and vivid dreams.  One time I dreamed I was in a new Final Fantasy game with a pretty epic story, too.  Not sure how my brain came up with that.  I was a White Mage in the dream.

There are 5 Cooking Mama games?  Which ones are really worth playing?

Cary Woodham

10/15/2014 at 06:23 PM

It really doesn't matter.  They're all pretty much the same game.

If you can find it, the WEIRDEST game in the Mama series is Babysitting Mama for Wii.  Look it up.

I almost bought that game a few years back.  It's the one that comes with the doll that you you can insert the wiimote in it's back.  I saw it for $10.

Yes that's one of the weirdest games I've ever played.

You need five exclamation points after Arcana Heart 3: Love Max.

Cary Woodham

10/16/2014 at 07:21 AM

Yes that is part of the title, according to the press release.  Stay tuned next week for my review of it on GamerDad.com and a special blog here, too!

Neat. I always like the character designs and the strange special moves during battles in games like this.

Yeah I had never played an Arcana Heart game before, and I liked some of the characters enough to write a blog about them.  Again, it'll be up next week, so don't touch that dial! :)

Her hairpiece is the hint?  Not the first thing(s) I think of when I think of Litchi :p

Cary Woodham

10/18/2014 at 12:40 PM

Yeah, in the game, her panda hairpiece is a power-up.  What other thing(s) were you thinking about?  The fact that she's a teacher and she's nice and smart?

OK, OK, I do know what you're referring to. :)  That's not the reason why she's my favorite character, though. :)

I was curious about the Blazblue game.  I'm glad you reviewed it.

And I'm glad to review games that nobody else will touch and review.  And I'm thankful that you read and commented on my stuff!

I haven't played much of it, but that's the charm of Thomas Was Alone, the narration and the flow of the story more than the puzzles.

Cary Woodham

10/18/2014 at 05:46 PM

Yes, but charm can only take you so far.

Alex-C25

10/18/2014 at 06:22 PM

Just a matter of taste then, since I also tend to get inmersed on narrative. I can see why you couldn't get into the game though.

Cary Woodham

Narrative can be good, but gameplay is king!

I'll get to what I can but I'm just to busy with my Octoberween celebrations myself. Blogs galore!
