Tropes Vs. Men on the Internet

I haven't been around much, or rather I guess I just haven't felt like I've much to say. After that whole "Tropes Vs" video thing I dunno I just haven't had any real desire to post on gaming sites/forums much. It's not the videos that do this to me, but rather the kind of idiots they bring out of the woodwork. I know not everyone (on both sides) are idiots, but the ones that are just make me want to fucking DESTROY EVERYTHING.

One of things I find so disheartening about this is all the people who go on about how "THE INDUSTRY HAS TO BE CHANGED FOR WOMEN!" and yet they stop arguing with you when they find out you are a woman. I mean if you really are behind a cause shouldn't stand for it no matter who stands in your way. These people are just in it to impress women they don't actually care.

Second the people who think feminism is about "PROTECTING THE WOMAN BECAUSE SHE IS ALWAYS THE VICTIM" These people right piss me off that's the exact opposite of what feminism should be about and anyone with a brain should be able to see this. That's all I have to say on them.

And lastly this is people on both sides anyone who calls people names, sexist, tells them to eat shit and die, etc. because you disagree kindly grab a hammer and smash your router and every every other device that gives you internet acsess because you don't belong here, thank you.

So anyways, I'll be around just probably not blogging much or engaging in any serious discussion for awhile. I know this wont go away i just need to take a break for the sake of my own mental (and emotional health) Till then I'll be spending my time staring at the bright colors, lolis and bishies in Atelier Ayesha because it helps dammit.

Now with more blatant yuri themes!

Kay, your opinion and mine are pretty close on all of those points. Don't you just want to say to some people "Oh, get over yourself?"

Ouch. I would ask you what made you so mad, but I'm afraid to be dragged into a men vs. women argument. Laughing Anyways, not all of us guys are sexist, nor does it matter which is better. We are who we are, which is human. I just don't understand why we can't just all get along lol.

Site threw an error on my post so I'm just going to type a condensed version lol. Sorry that you feel this way. It's funny has some mainstream depict women in an incorrect way which influences the opinions of others on your sex as a whole. However, I feel that some media, video games in particular, have made strides in this regard which allow us to have more mature female characters in games like the new Lara Croft and Ellen Page in Beyond and Last of Us. Some smart guy once said that events in history generally move towards the side of good and hopefully, this is one of things that will continue to be improved upon.

It'll blow over soon enough, like any topic.  With the Sarkeesian documentary starting to hit, the topic is rife for click bait pieces from all sorts of places - which is why there is more arguing than debate - more discourse that constructive conversation.

Hope you don't stay away too long, Kay.

That's exactly my problem people aren't debating they're just fighting and ugh it's just wearing me out. I'll still be around just not posting much till it blows over. I'd like to have actual intelligent conversations about this but it seems posting anything gets some one to jump on you, and I'm not really in the mood to deal with.

I agree.  It's funny, not long ago I was in a discussion with someone about racism.  This person called me a racist, I didn't know black people, and I wasn't sincere to their needs, yada yada yada.  After a little back & forth, I finally let this person know, I am black.  Comments stopped.  I go back to read those comments and I laugh. Laughing

It's sad that some people want everyone to change just for them. Undecided

Heh I actually have a funny story about this myself. I'm really not a fan of gameranx and me and a couple of friends were making fun of one of their articles over twitter so the editor-in-cheif over there blocked my account. Weeks later I had made a joke about him blocking me. It lead to some conversation and he unblocked and followed me when one of us mentioned I was female. He didn't stay following me for too long though haha.

Only Iron Shiek should tell people to eat shit and die. And by people, I mean Dwight Howard.

The only things I've really seen on it were a couple blogs here, the only one I posted on being asrealasitgets just sharing the video. Didn't seem like much arguing on there to me, seemed like pretty relaxed discussion, but I'm guessing you're talking about messageboards elsewhere. I pretty much only posted in that blog, so I'm kind of oblivious to the rest of it.

Otherwise, I've just kept posting and commenting on everything on this website that's just simply about games, and nothing too serious. I don't really have that much to say on it anyway, really, so I'm just keeping to the "fun stuff." lol

It's not that really I just don't really have any desire to go into lengthy dicussions about anything gaming related right now. They feel tedious with all this around right now i guess is what I'm saying.

Ah. I like my gaming discussions short and sweet as well; I can understand that.

I plan to avoid it this time if at all possible, Kay. I still remember the darkest time in 1up centered around their month of writing about gender issues and female tropes in gaming. (Sadly, it started with making fun of otaku & Jrpg lovers by implying they were  misogynists & pedophiles) That's when Bob Mackey and I clashed swords. (Something he and his gf apparently never moved on from.)

The thing is they tried to paint me as a angry male "monster" who hated women just because I disagreed with the way they presented their case. Yet the whole time I was actually for pro-equality.

I really think people are chasing "hob goblins" within videogames right now. It's as if they care more about what happens to polygonal animals & polygonal people than "real" living beings.

Lastly I HATE broad generalizations. Aka, when certain so called "professionals" try to paint us with an unflattering brush based on the type of games we like.

If you disagree with a professional, you're totally a monster. Always. Cool

Yeah i remember that I honestly dont know how they could keep Mackey around after all that shit. This whole thing has just been blown way out of proportion and I just want people to fucking just look around see what they are doing and try to realize they aren't being rational, but hey it's the internet i guess you can't expect people to have sense.

I'm not mad Anita Sarkesian has gone ahead with what she promised. However, it is kind of shifty she's disabled comments. On one hand she will not have to deal with genuinely nasty trolls but on the other hand she will not get any positive feedback and helpful criticism either.

I'm just gonna let the misogynist man babies and pseudo white knights fight to the death! Hey, at least they will not breed! (If only idiots really died from internet fights. That would be glorious!)

Yep I'm avoiding this topic till people start making sense again.

Bleh....I'm kinda burned out on this whole issue rght now. I guess my view is: If it would bother me elsewhere (specifically, any context where I can apply what I call literary criticism and what those around me call overthinking it), it'll bother me in video games. Badass female character? Awesome. Badass female character who goes on and on about not needing male help? Not so awesome. Also annoying as fuck. Badass female character who never actually earns her badass cred on-screen or in any manner the player/viewer/whatever can observe and constantly needs rescuing? Also not so awesome. Also also annoying as fuck. And so on.

Not sure if that was at all relevant, but there ya go. Hope you don't stay gone too long, Kay.

Honestly not much to add to the conversation here, as I too will be avoiding this discussion (at least for now) like the plague. However, I did want to commend everyone here for their civil and respectful tone.

These discussions while undoubtedly frustrating are also important to have. Thus, even if its “us” simply coming together to express our disappointment in the internet’s inability to foster a real discussion; it’s reassuring to know that at least in our little slice of the inter-webs there is room for discourse and intelligent discussion.

Moments like this make me excited to be part of this community.

F.Y.I. while I know most of you are more than fed up on the discussion, a while back produced some content on gender in the gaming sphere.

Jesse, Chessa, Sam, and Myself recorded a podcast discussing our various viewpoints on the subject.

Additionally, I also wrote a feature around the same time, discussing the importance of acknowledging gender within the gaming space.

I know most of you are simply fed up with this discussion (which is fine) so please feel free to tell me to “bugger off!”

Just thought I’d let everyone know the content is there if you are interested, again thanks community for being so awesome.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who feels this way. The arguments I've been having for the past week have been driving me crazy, I'm fine with talking about it I'm just wore out on the whole thing, and need to let it rest for awhile.

and yes as far as internet communties go this is one of the best glad I went her over Dtoid.
