Cary's Not-So-Scary Game Reviews!

Well I was hoping my next batch of game reviews would be all scary in time for Halloween, but aside from one game, these aren’t really that scary at all.  But I guess that’s what you get for writing for a family-oriented game review blog site!  But that’s OK.  These reviews still have plenty of monsters and ghosts and kooky spooks!  I hope you all can click on the links and read as many as you can and maybe even post a comment or two.  I’d appreciate it.  Thanks!

Skylanders Trap Team Extravaganza!

Skylanders is one of the big games I get to review every year, and I’m glad I’ve gotten the opportunity to do so for so long.  In this one, the gimmick is that you can capture bad guys, then they’ll be good and fight on your side!  I think that’s a pretty good message for kids, too, turning something bad into something good.  Sure the Skylanders games are gimmicky and a money sink and the gameplay isn’t very original, but I still think it’s one of the best kids games to come out in a long time.  It has certainly done well for Activision.  I read that it makes more money for them than Call of Duty!  And even though we’re all adults and probably don’t get into Skylanders, you have to admit that if we were kids right now, Skylanders would be the shit.  So I hope you get to read this review because I do put a little extra effort into ones like these.

Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2 (360)

Those of you who know me, you probably know that I detest the computer animated Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures cartoon on Disney XD.  I even wrote a whole blog about it about a year and a half ago.  It even made the 80’s Pac-Man cartoon look good.  I can’t even believe they made a second season of the new show.  Who watches this?  Anyway, last year they made a game based on the cartoon, and while it had the unfortunate condition of being associated with the bad cartoon, the game itself isn’t really that bad at all.  It’s just a fun and colorful 3-D platforming romp, and you really don’t see those around much anymore.  The sequel is just more of the same, just with characters from later in the first and second seasons.  Again, not a bad game either.  Maybe even better than Pac-Man World 3?  I don’t know if I’d say it’s better than Pac-Man World 1 or 2, I have too many special memories associated with those games.

Reader Review: Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (Vita)

The only scary game on this list is this anime-styled visual mystery novel for Vita, and I didn’t even review it!  I had my friend, who has a Vita, review it.  Of course, you couldn’t tell it was a scary game by the screenshot I chose to go along with it (it has a cute bunny on it).  Even though I have no prior knowledge of this game, after looking at the characters I’d have to say my favorite is Akane Owari, the “ultimate gymnast” because she looks cool.

Adventure Xpress (iPad)

This is just a match three puzzle game from Adult Swim Games, and it plays a lot like Puzzle Quest or Puzzle and Dragons.  Even though I said I should stop reviewing these things, Cartoon Network Games and Adult Swim Games have been so good to me that I decided to review this one anyway.  It’s not bad for what it is at least.  Speaking of Cartoon Network, I have to rant a little bit and complain that our cable provider, Dish Network, just dropped Cartoon Network, Boomerang, CNN, and a bunch of other Turner Stations.  I don’t really care about CNN, but I do like watching Cartoon Network, and it helps me with my game reviews, too (being familiar with what’s on that kids would watch).  Plus, Sonic Boom is supposed to be airing on Cartoon Network, and I was hoping to watch it there in case I review the games.  I can’t believe they got dropped, I’ve been using Dish Network for nearly 15 years and they’ve always had Cartoon Network on it.  Sometimes I get the feeling that cable stations and cable providers can be a bunch of crooks.  It’s just that I work for a customer oriented company and we bend over backwards to make our customers happy, so it annoys the fire out of me when I see another company not doing the same thing.  I thought about asking my contact from Cartoon Network Games about it, but I’m sure she has nothing to do with this so I didn’t want to give her any grief about it.

Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle (3DS)

This is based on a cartoon (on Cartoon Network, no less), but the press release said it was a hit show, but I’ve only seen it come on at like, 4:30 in the morning.  So it can’t be THAT popular.  The game is an arena style fighter like Smash Bros., except super slow and clunky.  After playing Smash Bros., you have to wonder why other game makers would even bother.

Arcana Heart 3: LOVE MAX!!!!! (PS3)

I already wrote about the characters in this game on my last blog, so I won’t go into it much here.  It’s a fun and accessible fighter featuring a cast of anime-styled female characters, and it’s surprisingly fun with some neat characters and moves.  I’ve never reviewed an Arcana Heart game before, so I’m glad I got the opportunity to do so here.

PegGoo Pop (iPad)

And last (and most certainly least) is this game that pretty much copies Peggle.  Super Monkey Ball Bounce, which I reviewed a few weeks ago, did the same thing but was at least more interesting.

Conclusions

And that’s all for now!  I really appreciate you all reading my reviews and blogs and posting comments.  Thanks a bunch.  I don’t really have any ideas for upcoming blogs, so I’m open to suggestions.  If you want to read about something from me, please let me know in the comments section.  If I like your idea (and have enough time to write it), I’ll make a blog about your suggestion!  Later!  --Cary

I do plan on writing a review of Pokemon Art Academy, but I'll do it after the Christmas rush.  So maybe sometime in late December.  And it'll just be a review, not a blog.  But I will dedicate it to my grandmother who passed away last year because she painted and taught art classes.  Not sure if she'd be interested in drawing Pokemon, but I'm sure if she was teaching a kid who wanted to, she'd do her best to teach him or her.

The Gabrielle license is very cute, I do wish Natsume would use it more.

Yeah, I can't watch Legend of Korra at home now cause Suddenlink and Viacom couldn't reach an agreement. What's most irritating is that Korra is online-only this season anyway, but every time I go to watch it on nick.com, I get a message from Viacom telling me it's unavailable and to complain to Suddenlink about it, who of course would simply blame Viacom if I did. Guess I'll just use my free Hulu+ code, since Korra streams there.

Honestly though, when I wrote an editorial about that situation, Viacom honestly seemed like they were telling the truth about Suddenlink being at fault for rejecting their own proposal. It's really hard to prove whether it's the cable company or content provider in these cases though, since I don't think their contracts with each other are made public. But I feel your pain in regards to Turner content, including Cartoon Network, being dropped from your DishTV. Begging the question: How'd you manage to escape Time Warner Cable's borderline monopoly in Dallas? lol Granted, it can't be anywhere near as bad as Suddenlink's monopoly in Nacogdoches. AT&T kind of competes, but Suddenlink really does seem like the only game in town for Internet and cable.

As for Tenkai Knights, I don't know what the ratings are like for that Saturday@5:30am central slot, but what's it matter when Nielsen can't get its ratings right, eh?! You hear about all that? Apparently, ABC got a huge ratings boost cause of an error with Nielsen's machines. It really brought the industry's metrics for what a popular show is into question. That makes a huge impact, since TV profit comes largely from advertisers, who are paying for an audience the networks are selling them.

What makes me sad is there are no more major broadcast channels airing Saturday morning cartoons outside of NBC Kids. And I've never heard of the cartoons they're airing.

... sorry, but I was a Radio/TV major in my undergrad life, so these things interest me.

Thanks for reading and commenting on my reviews.

In the Skylanders game, you can play mini-games where the bad guys do good things to redeem themselves.

The powers Pac-Man gets work better in the game than in the cartoon.

I thought the same thing about the plot of Tenkai Knights being the same as Transformers ike you did.

My brother Jeff told me about the next season of Korra being online only.  That's messed up.  My review of The Legend of Korra will be up next week at this time, so be on the lookout for it.

We've been using AT&T for 15 years or more (they're also based out of Dallas I think), and we get our cable bundled with them.  I thought I'd wait it out a bit to see if they would negotiate to bring Cartoon Network back, but since it's been a while, we will probably complain and see if we can get a discount on our cable because of it.

I'm not a big fan of Time Warner Cable, though.  I see repair trucks of theirs all over town, which is not a good sign.  My friends and family who use them always complain about them, and we just switched over to them at work, and I don't think it's as good.  But then, what do I know?

You got me to thinking.  Maybe my next blog could be about my favorite Saturday morning cartoons?  I think I did that once at 1up a long time ago.  Maybe it's time to revisit that?

That's a great idea. And maybe you could discuss those Saturday morning cartoons based on video games, like TheLastNinja did a while back. Would love to see your take.

There will be video game cartoons on my list, but I'm not going to be as ambitious and list ALL the video game cartoons like he did!

I like the design of the characters in Skylanders. My nephew was way into it for a while. Last time I asked though, he was quiet about it, so either he's out grown it or his Dad made him stop because of all the figures he probably asked for.

At some point I was hoping to play some video games with my neices and nephews but it looks like that's not going to happen. Yet another thing I can add to my life of things missed.

Oh I love the Skylanders character designs.  Very creative and fun.

I hope you get to play games with yoru family.  That's one thing I miss about my little brothers now that they are grown up.

I've seen commercials for Tenkai Knights, but given how early in the morning it gives I haven't had the chance to actually watch it.

The only way I knew about Tenkai Knights was via the commercials.  There's no way I'm getting up that early for that!

Well at least this was something for Octoberween. Once I get caught up I'll try to read up on the possible scary review you did.
