Cary's Not-So-Scary Game Reviews!

Well I was hoping my next batch of game reviews would be all scary in time for Halloween, but aside from one game, these aren’t really that scary at all. But I guess that’s what you get for writing for a family-oriented game review blog site! But that’s OK. These reviews still have plenty of monsters and ghosts and kooky spooks! I hope you all can click on the links and read as many as you can and maybe even post a comment or two. I’d appreciate it. Thanks!
Skylanders Trap Team Extravaganza!
Skylanders is one of the big games I get to review every year, and I’m glad I’ve gotten the opportunity to do so for so long. In this one, the gimmick is that you can capture bad guys, then they’ll be good and fight on your side! I think that’s a pretty good message for kids, too, turning something bad into something good. Sure the Skylanders games are gimmicky and a money sink and the gameplay isn’t very original, but I still think it’s one of the best kids games to come out in a long time. It has certainly done well for Activision. I read that it makes more money for them than Call of Duty! And even though we’re all adults and probably don’t get into Skylanders, you have to admit that if we were kids right now, Skylanders would be the shit. So I hope you get to read this review because I do put a little extra effort into ones like these.
Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2 (360)
Those of you who know me, you probably know that I detest the computer animated Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures cartoon on Disney XD. I even wrote a whole blog about it about a year and a half ago. It even made the 80’s Pac-Man cartoon look good. I can’t even believe they made a second season of the new show. Who watches this? Anyway, last year they made a game based on the cartoon, and while it had the unfortunate condition of being associated with the bad cartoon, the game itself isn’t really that bad at all. It’s just a fun and colorful 3-D platforming romp, and you really don’t see those around much anymore. The sequel is just more of the same, just with characters from later in the first and second seasons. Again, not a bad game either. Maybe even better than Pac-Man World 3? I don’t know if I’d say it’s better than Pac-Man World 1 or 2, I have too many special memories associated with those games.
Reader Review: Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (Vita)
The only scary game on this list is this anime-styled visual mystery novel for Vita, and I didn’t even review it! I had my friend, who has a Vita, review it. Of course, you couldn’t tell it was a scary game by the screenshot I chose to go along with it (it has a cute bunny on it). Even though I have no prior knowledge of this game, after looking at the characters I’d have to say my favorite is Akane Owari, the “ultimate gymnast” because she looks cool.
This is just a match three puzzle game from Adult Swim Games, and it plays a lot like Puzzle Quest or Puzzle and Dragons. Even though I said I should stop reviewing these things, Cartoon Network Games and Adult Swim Games have been so good to me that I decided to review this one anyway. It’s not bad for what it is at least. Speaking of Cartoon Network, I have to rant a little bit and complain that our cable provider, Dish Network, just dropped Cartoon Network, Boomerang, CNN, and a bunch of other Turner Stations. I don’t really care about CNN, but I do like watching Cartoon Network, and it helps me with my game reviews, too (being familiar with what’s on that kids would watch). Plus, Sonic Boom is supposed to be airing on Cartoon Network, and I was hoping to watch it there in case I review the games. I can’t believe they got dropped, I’ve been using Dish Network for nearly 15 years and they’ve always had Cartoon Network on it. Sometimes I get the feeling that cable stations and cable providers can be a bunch of crooks. It’s just that I work for a customer oriented company and we bend over backwards to make our customers happy, so it annoys the fire out of me when I see another company not doing the same thing. I thought about asking my contact from Cartoon Network Games about it, but I’m sure she has nothing to do with this so I didn’t want to give her any grief about it.
Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle (3DS)
This is based on a cartoon (on Cartoon Network, no less), but the press release said it was a hit show, but I’ve only seen it come on at like, 4:30 in the morning. So it can’t be THAT popular. The game is an arena style fighter like Smash Bros., except super slow and clunky. After playing Smash Bros., you have to wonder why other game makers would even bother.
Arcana Heart 3: LOVE MAX!!!!! (PS3)
I already wrote about the characters in this game on my last blog, so I won’t go into it much here. It’s a fun and accessible fighter featuring a cast of anime-styled female characters, and it’s surprisingly fun with some neat characters and moves. I’ve never reviewed an Arcana Heart game before, so I’m glad I got the opportunity to do so here.
And last (and most certainly least) is this game that pretty much copies Peggle. Super Monkey Ball Bounce, which I reviewed a few weeks ago, did the same thing but was at least more interesting.
Conclusions
And that’s all for now! I really appreciate you all reading my reviews and blogs and posting comments. Thanks a bunch. I don’t really have any ideas for upcoming blogs, so I’m open to suggestions. If you want to read about something from me, please let me know in the comments section. If I like your idea (and have enough time to write it), I’ll make a blog about your suggestion! Later! --Cary
