Sixty Hours Later – Dragon Age 2

I think that Dragon Age 2 might be one of my favorite games of the last decade. Not the best game of all time or a superior successor to the first DA game, but I had fun nonetheless and I think that’s what really matters in the end, right? There needs to be something said about a game that is capable of taking you away from other games long enough to want to see it through to the end, right? By long enough I mean sixty full hours! I can’t think of many games, aside from certain MMOs or possibly an open world type game that has pulled me into its world recently the way this game has. My only real regret is giving up on it when the game first released. I’m not sure what happened between then and now that I suddenly found this game to be so intriguing?

The only difference between this play through and the last is that this time my main character is female and most of my party is made up of females. The main antagonist of the game turned out to be a female as well, which was also a surprise. This actually kind of blew my mind. I’m sure there are other RPGs out there that have all girl groups going up against some evil bitch trying to end the world. Actually, Final Fantasy X-2 had a similar type theme. The game is so dialog and character driven, as most Bioware games are, that it gave my all girl group much more dimension than I’m used to seeing in other games where female characters are somewhat lacking in character development. (Lightning in the XIII saga comes to mind). When it comes to legends I’m so used to seeing men dominate the spotlight that when it came to the final battle, it was all women setting the world on fire, and it was kind of EPIC. I also liked my ending. The champion disappeared off the map and is being hunted by yet more female characters. Of course being a Bioware game and given all the dialog choices, players will have different experiences with different characters and different endings. I really enjoyed mine though. I’m far more interested in seeing how all of this plays out in the third game. I would consider the events that occurred through my play through to be quite significant.

I really didn’t want to get into very long game but it just pulled me in. I don’t think I want to play through another long ass game at the moment with so many new games out and a backlog to get through I might just hold off on Inquisition for a while. Bring on the short games! Currently I’ve started a new play through of Etrian Odyssey IV on 3DS and I’m looking to get into some old school PC RPGs like Baldur’s Gate so something must be wrong with me.

Community Q&A:
Have you been pulled in by any long ass games recently and has it cut into your other gaming time and have you completely changed your mind about a game you said you swore was terrible but then loved?

EO IV is great!!!

I'm surprised you like this so much.  A lot of people hate this game.  I haven't played through the whole thing, so I don't really have an opinion on it.  I'd like to play through it though.  Have you played Origins?  I suppose you have.  Well, it's Inquisition time, now, man!!!

EOIV is dope!

I was surprised I liked it too! But I did! It is definitly more action oriented and I was definitely over powered half-way through the game and I was wiping hordes off the screen like a fold out page from an X-MEN comic. There is a lot of talking in this game. A lot! It reminds me of those Tell Tale games sometimes but with more action.  With all the super powers it kind of reminded me of those top down X-MEN RPGs that came out last gen. I think one was called Apocolypse or something.

It isn't focused on exploration at all. I think this was the biggest gripes from fans. You spend most of those 60 hours in the city and revisit the same locations. Story-wise I thought was interesting to see the power struggle between Templars and Mages. Character-wise I liked all the characters backgrounds and struggles.   The action is super fast paced too. I think this was another issue with fans. Whatever.Cool

yeah i heard the story was great, but like you said i think the reused environments turned a lot of people off.  I still want to play it and try to appreciate it for what it is though.

The story is basically X-MEN. Mages are feared and persecuted by the Templars who control the city of Kirkwall. You show up and essentially take sides with one or the other and it all culminates with political factions tearing the city apart in the end. The bulk of the game is spent trying align yourself with one side or the other and the characters in your party are all divided themselves Mages vs Templars. I thought it was pretty good. Some of my party members actually abandoned me before the final fight becuase they disagreed with my politics. I was like seriousely? WTF? But that can happen in Dragon Age which is why I love it.Cool

I don't completely understand why so many people hate on Dragon Age 2 so much.  Yeah, it's not like DA:O, but I enjoyed the story and many of the characters.  DA2 is a good game.

I was mostly interested in the story. The combat is very streamlined and fast paced but I mostly looked at it as a diversion between story elements. A fun diversion mind you. I think the game did a good job of building up tension until the very end. I felt like everything I did mattered and I wanted to get to the bottom of everything that happened.

I don't know if there's a game I have hated and then come around on.

That's a good question.

Yea, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has stopped all my other gaming. The game seems practically endless. I'm up to 80 hours now and there's still a lot to do. Plus co-op is fun as hell. I'm going to log over a hundred hours for sure before 2014 ends.

Etrian Odyssey IV is not a good choice for a short game. Howlongtobeat.com says the main story is 59 hours and to 100% the game it'll take 100 hours.

I played the demo for Dragon Age 2 and was like "meh", but I'm glad to hear it's good, because I still want to play it sometime.

How is Borderlands 80 hours? I got into it because I read it was a short game? Well if you can milk all of that game out of it then that is great!

Yea, so you can finish the main story and side missions in like 25 hours, but then you can play it again on two different difficulty levels which are seriously challenging. Then there are hidden bosses, co-op, higher level weapons to find, and achievements/trophies. It's just fun to stay in the world with a buddy or two and work your way through the game on higher difficulties and tweak your gear, which changes frequently due to the large number of items that you are always finding. Plus each item you find is different and creates different effects. It's just fun to watch them at work. At one point I was all ice gear and my attacks would make it snow where ever I was fighting. It looked awesome!

Knights of the Old Republic 2 was this for me. I was so consumed by the first KOTOR that by the time the 2nd one rolled around I had hyped it up to the point that it could never satisfy me. I remember playing perhaps 10 hours the first time around and forsaking it for something else. Cut to earlier this year when I decided to fire it up on Steam and played the whole thing through in a couple of weeks.

I think games can mesh with you at different points of your life depending on your dominant mood at the time. I was really in the mood for a deep thought provoking story and KOTOR2 certainly filled that for me this time around. I now regard it as one of my most beloved games.

Spot on Mart! Actually, I 've never played the KOTOR sequel and now maybe I should.
