So two unexpected things happened at the university paper I do the opinions page for (http://www.thepinelog.com/). One, the boss-boss resigned and two, the Editor-in-Chief (student position) gave us all Christmas gifts.

Mine was a $20 Steam Wallet Redemption code which was awesome and actually thoughtful. Now I am wondering what to get him as I don't like receiving without giving. He loves video games and wants to be a games journalist, so I was thinking of getting him a games journalism book, but maybe he already has all the good ones? I wouldn't know what those would be though or even a single book on that specific topic. My other idea would be to donate for Toys for Tots at the upcoming SFA game in his honor. Thoughts?

Speaking of SFA, while the football team got rolled over in their first playoff game against the same university that ended the basketball team's home winning streak (University of Nothern Iowa, who may become a rival after this year because of those games; they'll never be as hated as Sam Houston here, and there's no trophy going back and forth like Chief Caddo in our rivalry with Northwestern, but to have a university beat you in two sports in the same semester within a couple weeks ... I mean, I hate them if nothing else), they won against Michigan on the road last night by almost double digits. A good sign if they want to return to the NCAA Tournament this year.

Oh and the Mavs won in double-overtime against the Bulls too! Thank you Kirk Hinrich for that gift of a stupid foul, which Dirk called one of the dumber ones he's seen in his 17 NBA years:

Too bad they're currently trailing the Bucks, but we'll see. UPDATE: They just beat the Bucks 107-105 after trailing most of the game.

Happy Hump Day Pixlbit. And because I know how much this community LOVES any time Facebook or Twitter culture seeps through, here's my woman crush Wednesday:

Being an actress on Newsroom and dating Aaron Rodgers are good ways to make me like you.

maybe you should give him that book Knightdriver has been reading and blogging about.  That seems like a good one.

I don't think he's that into the older systems really. I thought about that too though.

Just don't give him my advice about becoming a games journalist (which is, 'don't do it').  I used to not be so negative.  What happened?

Find out what kind of games he likes.  If you don't know what he's got, a gift card to GameStop is great, too.

I don't know who that lady is.  I'm horrible with names.

Don't feel bad, Cary, I have no clue who she is, either.

Olivia Munn. Not an A-lister, don't worry.

The name does sound familiar for some reason.

She was on the video games show Attack of the Show! if that helps.

I never watched that show, but I know what you're talking about.

Gift cards are a good way to go, as are donating to charity in someone's name. My go to charity when I do that is usually Heifer International. We gave a jar of honey to Jason's parents when we donated a bee hive in their name one year. If you go the Heifer route, you should check out Patrick Rothfuss' Worldbuilders website. Toys for Tots is a good one, too.

See above re: woman.

Heifer is a cool name. Also kinda funny. Sounds a bit like heffer. May donate to them just for that.

A heifer is a young cow that has yet to have a calf. What I like best about Heifer International is that they not only give the animals, but also the training to take care of them, and one of the stipulations in the agreement is for the recipient to give the firstborn of whatever livestock they received to another person in need in their area. All in all, they epitomize the saying "Feed a man and he eats for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he eats for a lifetime."

Oh Heinrich, why did you go and do that. He's normally a very good player and then this bonehead play.

As for the Christmas Gift the book sounds like a good idea. If he's into reading books on a tablet I'd say search out what ever books are available on the Google Play/iTunes stores and give him a card with a note saying "hey I saw this book online and thought it would be good".

Oh Olivia Munn, I do love her Sloan character on Newsroom and because of this

Not sure what you mean, but the retiring boss will have a replacement. It wasn't a "screw this I quit," she is just wanting to retire.
