I like free, but... and other bits and pieces

Last night I downloaded the current Games With Gold game. The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief is a point-and-click murder mystery in three chapters, of which only the first part was free. I played for a bit last night, and honestly, if I'd paid for it, I would have been pissed. Loading times are long, dialogue is cheesey, the characters are not terribly engaging, and it controls terribly. I'm not even sure if I'm going to finish it, to be honest. It's obvious why it was free. The other two chapters are $9.99 apiece, and I sure as heck won't be spending that amount for what isn't a very good game. Color me disappointed in the extreme, as I usually like point-and-clicks. Well, the next game on the 16th is SSX, so hopefully I'll enjoy that one more.

Other games I've been playing are a series of point-and-click survival horror flash games called Deep Sleep, Deeper Sleep, and The Deepest Sleep. They're pretty good. Very short, but that doesn't bother me. The puzzles aren't too hard, the music and sound effects are suitably creepy, and the graphics aren't bad. And they're free. They sort of remind me of The Last Door, but graphics are a bit more modern-looking.

I'm having a hard time getting motivated for Christmas. I'm listening to Christmas music right now to see if that inspires me. So far, not so much. Once I start in on making stuff, that will all change, but it's the getting started part that is difficult.

I'm waiting to hear back about several jobs that I've applied for this week. I really hate the whole move to online applications. I much prefer walking in and talking to someone face-to-face. The room cleaning job at the local Hilton has the most promise, hoping the head of housekeeping calls me back today.

Well, Pixlbit Nation, I'm going to make myself some lunch and then find something constructive to do with the rest of my day. Happy Wednesday!

Back in May I bought the full game for $4.99 on PSN. I didn't play much of it. Got stuck on the train interviewing passengers. I swear I talked to everyone over and over again and could not figure out what to do next to move the story along so I quit. Hey it was only 5 bucks.

Giving you one chapter free and making you pay 20 bucks for the others sounds like a typical slimy M$ trick.

That's why I don't waste money on Gold anymore. My son stopped playing multiplayer and I got tired of paying $60 bucks a year for what amounts to nothing.

I think I get my money's worth out of it. And I got stuck at that part, too, because you have to be standing in exactly the right spot or the "Examine dish" and "Look behind the counter" options don't show up. I got stuck trying to figure out how to distract the violinist so I can look in his case for the stolen purse.

Yeah I found myself going back and forth and just catching the prompts after a couple of passes. I may actually go back to it and find out exactly where I quit.

I guess Gold might have some worth if you are a multiplayer type but for me it offers nothing because I don't play well with others. :)

I thought I saw SSX on some site for really cheap. Can't remember where though. I've played a couple of the old SSX games before and they were kind of fun but like driving games I'm not that good at them.

Oh, I'm so going to suck at SSX, but it will be amusing.

Too bad about The Raven. I really liked the graphics I saw of it.

It's not the worst game I've ever played, so give it a try. It's free, what'll it hurt. You might like it better, or at least you'll be warned that it's not all that and a cup of tea with a crumpet.

mmmmmm, crumpets.

I might download it anyway then. Why not.

I hate online stuff too. What really infuriated me was showing up dressed for an interview in a shopping strip and having every single store tell me they wouldn't take my resume and to apply online.

That had to suck, Joe. At least I've been doing most of my job hunting through the Maine Jobs Bank, so I know before hand which jobs require online apps. The room cleaning job at the Hilton was the exception. I had to email the head of housekeeping first, and then she asked me to come in and fill out an app. Unfortunately, she had something come up and wasn't able to meet face-to-face, but I have an interview on Wednesday at 9:00 AM.

I got it on psn for $4.99 and its slow to start but gets better but I wouldn't pay 20 bucks for the whole game yet alone for 2 more episodes lol!!

I'll go back to it if it gets better. Thanks for the heads up, Rodney.

If you like point and click adventures, I highly recommend some of TellTale's stuff.  I'm not really into their newest offerings, but a few years ago I was enjoying their Sam & Max games, Tales of Monkey Island, and Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures.  I wish they still made whimsical stuff like that.  Now it's just all dark Walking Dead stuff.

I picked up a bunch of those games in a PSN sale last spring. I started one of the Sam & Max games, but got distracted before I got very far. What I played was fun, though.

I've had a nightmare with this guitar for my brother.  We ordered the wrong one because of a mistake on their website, and now returning it has been a pain as Fedex wouldn't come pick it up.  Finally mailed it back UPS today and it cost $70.  Goddammit.  Ordered a different guitar through a different company now and I feel better a little.  Hope to set up my tree in my bedroom and do some wrapping today.

I hate those sorts of hassles. Jason went through something similar when he bought a TV off ebay (first mistake) last year that arrived and didn't work. Good luck getting things sorted out with that.

I haven't played a point-and-click game since Shadowgate on the NES. I've always meant to play more of 'em but I keep forgetting.

Good luck on the job front!

Thanks! Job interview at the Hilton Garden Inn on Weds.

There are a lot of really good point-and-click adventure games free online. Let me know if you want any recommendations.

Okay I'm seriously going to have to try those deep sleep games. What platform are they on?

Also, I like that model. Getting the first part free and then deciding if you like the rest enough to pay for it is a good idea IMO. Too bad the game was shit.

The Deep Sleep games are flash games and are available in a couple of places: Armor Games and Kongregate are the two I know of. I played them on Kongregate.

That is the good thing about the freebie games, if they're terrible you didn't waste any cash on them. I do like the SSX games, but the last one I didn't play much of. I actually borrowed a copy from my cousin, played a little bit, and didn't go back to it until I bought my own, and played just a little bit more. Like I saw with the other games in Mount Backlog, one day I'll get back to it. Hopefully you have more fun with it.

Good luck with the job. Since I'm a little late with my blogs hopefully you already got it!

Wow? Really? That bad? Honestly I haven't gotten to the game yet but Now i'm curious to give it a try to see how it is.

I'm also waiting on SSX too. I passed up on it due to online pass but since EA killed their online pass system all is forgiven!

Tried playing again tonight, and gave up in frustration.
