Cary's Top Ten Favorite Guilty Gear Characters!

On 01/11/2015 at 07:15 PM by Cary Woodham

Recently I played and reviewed the new PS3 fighting game Guilty Gear Xrd –SIGN--. A lot of times when I play a new fighting game, I like to talk about the characters a bit.  So here’s a blog about my top ten favorite Guilty Gear characters.  Just a fair warning, though.  I was in a silly mood when I wrote this, and I usually like characters who are silly anyway so this blog will be a little goofy.  Plus I don’t have a whole lot of knowledge of the Guilty Gear franchise.  I’ve only played this new game and Guilty Gear Dust Strikers on the DS.  And the only reason why I got the DS version was because it was on sale and had silly little mini-games featuring some of the fighters.  I have watched some of my friends play the other Guilty Gear games, though.  And the characters I listed here aren’t in any particular order of preference.  So anyway, let’s begin!

Faust

This guy is really weird!  He’s super tall and fights with a giant scalpel.  He says he’s a doctor, but I’m not so sure.  His biggest feature is that he wears a paper sack on his head with eye holes cut out.  I’m thinking that at a young age, his father couldn’t catch the baby kangaroo that he thought was a giant mouse (oh please SOMEONE get that reference).  Faust also has a lot of silly attacks.  In Xrd, I can make him turn into a baseball player and smack the opponent with a bat!  And when I watched my friends play one time, they made him teleport by opening imaginary doors!  What a crazy guy!

Millia Rage

Only thing cool about her is that she fights with her hair.  But that’s still pretty neat so she goes on my list.  Someone should draw some fan art of her exercising, but her hair lifts the weights instead of her!  That would be silly!

May

She’s some kind of pirate girl who fights by swinging around a giant anchor that’s as big as she is!  So she must be really strong!  Maybe she eats her spinach.  She is a sailor, so that would make sense (not really).  She can also summon dolphins to attack, I saw my friends do that once when I watched them play.  Another good thing about this character is she’s not all mean and rude and dark and brooding like a lot of fighter characters are.  She’s happy and cheerful.

I-No

“Hey, who’s your favorite Guilty Gear character?”

“I-No.”

“That’s great, I’m glad you know.  Do you know their name?”

“I-No.”

“OK, great, can you can tell me who it is?”

“I keep telling you, I-No!”

“SO WHY DON’T YOU TELL ME THEIR NAME?!?”

“THAT’S WHAT I KEEP TRYING TO TELL YOU!!!”

Sorry, I kind of shifted into Abbott and Costello mode there.  Actually I think her name is pronounced “Eee-No” but then my above joke wouldn’t work as well.  I-No is cool because she wears a neat hat and plays a rock guitar.  Only problem with her is that she’s kind of mean.

Baiken

The only reason why she’s on the list is because she has pink hair.  If you are a video game character and have pink hair, you have a pretty good chance of getting on my favorites list.  And I’m pretty sure her name is pronounced “Buy-Ken,” not “Bacon.”  Although that would be pretty funny.  One interesting thing about this character is that she lost her right arm and her left eye, presumably to a fight, I suppose.  That kind of makes me sad because she’ll have a hard time playing video games, but I imagine playing video games is the last thing on a Guilty Gear character’s mind, which is ironic since they all are video game characters.  I’ve been blind in my left eye since birth, so I guess I can relate to Baiken that way.  If I can be serious for a moment, I’d like to say that this kind of character is a good reminder to us that we should be thankful that we have our eyesight and arms and hands so we can play video games and lots of other things.  Sometimes I think we take things like this for granted.

Jam

I can’t remember how to spell her last name, because it’s pretty long, so she’ll just be ‘Jam’ here.  She’s cool because I think she’s like a waitress or a chef in a restaurant, so I think it’s funny her name is Jam.  Also, in Guilty Gear Dust Strikers on the DS, there are a few mini-games featuring chibi versions of the characters, and in Jam’s game she has to catch falling food.  I wish more fighting games would do silly mini-games like that.  Sadly, both Baiken and Jam are not playable in Guilty Gear Xrd, unless they are unlockable or will be DLC later on.

Bedman

I don’t really like this character that much, but I do appreciate how creative it is.  Anyway, it’s a small, sickly, skinny guy asleep in a bed.  Or it could be a girl, I’m not sure.  But since his name is BedMAN, we’ll say it’s a guy for now.  Anyway, he’s strapped to this bed that is like a robot that does all the fighting for him while he sleeps.  I tell you what, if I were a fighting game character, I’d love to do everything while I sleep.  I’m pretty good at staying active and in shape, but I also really like to sleep, too.  It’s one of the few things I’m good at!

Potemkin

If you’re a giant robot guy who looks like a Mega Man boss (think Commando Man from Mega Man 10), then yeah, you’re going to be on my list.

Dizzy

Well she has neat wings and blue hair, but I mainly like her because her name is “Dizzy.”  How can you not like someone whose name is Dizzy?

Ramlethal Valentine

I think she’s supposed to be a villain, but she has these two happy face balloon things that help her attack.  I’m not sure what they are, but they’re kind of creepy and neat at the same time.

Venom

Now if you’re paying attention, you may be thinking, “Hey wait a minute Cary, this is 11 characters, not ten.”  Well it’s my list and I felt like putting another character in, so there.  Venom is cool because he uses a pool stick to fight, and will hit floating billiard balls to attack you.  Can anyone remember if there was a Venom pool mini-game in Guilty Gear Dust Strikers?  It’s been a long time since I played it.  If there wasn’t a pool mini-game with Venom, there should’ve been!

Conclusions

And that’s all for now!  In the comments section, let me know what you think of my list, and tell me if there are any other Guilty Gear characters that you think I’d like.  And let me know your favorite Guilty Gear characters, too!  Later!  --Cary

I honestly can't stand May. Her voice kind of annoys me. And is she really that nice when as far as I can gather she works for a pirate crew? Or is that something I misinterpreted in Guilty Gear X2's storyline? I don't know.

Otherwise, I do think Faust has a cool, quirky design if also a bit creepy, I love I-No's style, and as someone who loves to play pool I agree about Venom.  So I dig your list overall.

The other characters I'm not familiar with as far as names go, but I bet they are in X2 and I just forgot their names.

My favorite character is Ky-Kiske cause that is who controls well for me. He's also a misunderstood authority figure who is just trying to be fair to everyone and do his job and based on an old job I had, I can relate.

Well in the new game, May does have a pirate crew of girls.  And you know I like annoying characters anyway.  I stink at pool, by the way.

I can be a bit of a pool shark. And to be fair, May didn't really seem all that aware of what she was doing in X2, so maybe she simply was hanging with the wrong crowd without really knowing it.

I don't really know the character backstories that well.  For all I care, May's storyline could be, "Once upon a time, May the pirate girl got really strong and picked up an anchor and decided to go beat up people.  The End!"

Lol true. I like having stories in fighting games, but I'm not gonna try and argue they are classic stories or anything.

Backstories are all right unless they get too complicated.  BlazBlue is the worst culprit of that.  But I imaiging Guilty Gear is, too, seeing as both series are made by the same folks.

That pool mini-game is just about the only thing I remember from Dust Strikers. Not that I thought it was bad, just that I haven't played it in years.

Loved those Sylvester Jr. shorts. "Oh, the shame!"

Oh so there was a pool mini-game?  It's been a long time since I played Dust Strikers so my memory is very fuzzy.  Glad you got the reference.

Guilty Gear Xrd is visually amazing, and plays pretty well too.  I kinda hate buying Arc Systems' games because they are worse than Capcom when it comes to constantly revising their fighting games and charging near full price for slightly upgraded versions.  I can't argue with their quality, but I just know I'm going to regret buying Xrd when the next version comes out with all the characters they left out.

For the record, I like I-No's design, but Sol, Ky, Jam, and Chipp were easier for me to use.  Damn, there are so many great characters in Guilty Gear, it's hard to pick a favorite.

They did leave out a lot of characters, didn't they?  There are a lot of interesting characters in Guilty Gear, that's why I decided to just make a top ten list and not put them in any particular order.

I always like the weirdest characters in these fighting games and Bedman is definitely that.

I'd love to be able to lie around in bed all day and have my bed do all the work for me.  (not really)

It reminds me of Nute Gunray from Star Wars Episode 1 in his walking chair.

Yeah but he has to sit up.

And needs giant robotic arms. Maybe he can take them from General Grievous.

Cary Woodham

He could spare a few extra arms, I'm sure.

My Top Ten is

10. Justice

9. Cliff Underson

8. Zappa

7. Faust

6. Chipp Zanuff

5. Johnny

4. I-No

3. Baiken

2. Slayer

1. Order-Sol

Order- Sol is at the top partly because he's my prefered playable character but mostly because he uses a blunt slab of rock to beat his opponants, he beats people with a big rock. That's manly! Tongue Out

This game still has no european date Cry

Wait I thought Xrd was already released there?! That's crazy. Well at worse scenario you can import either version (US and JPN, strangely the JPN had a day 1 patch that added in English support) but many it will be costly. I don't understand Arc's/Aksys skiddishness with European countries. Shouldn't they be parterning up with someone to help out with this?

Cary Woodham

01/12/2015 at 08:36 PM

I'm kind of out of the loop with the import scene now, so I don't know how that would work.

It's not that hard nowadays. Since both the PS3 and 4 are region free all you have to do is just find a retailer and get a game. Amazon is good for NTSC/PAL games (North America, NTSC, PAL, Europe) and Play Asia is one of the best for Japan.

Cary Woodham

I wonder what PS3 games I would import?  Back on the GBA, DS, and PSP, I imported a lot of games from places like NCSX and Play-Asia.  All those handhelds were region free.

Wow, someone uses a boulder as a weapon.  Pretty cool and strong!  I hope you get the game in Europe soon!

But Cary, who's on first? But really nice list. My favorite characters from Guilty Gear are Robo-Ky, Jam, I-No, Ky, and Millia. I have Xrd too, its an OK game so far. I haven't played it much though. Just don't have the desire too really.

The new Guilty Gear game is kind of hard, so I haven't gotten into it much either.  But I had fun writing about the characters anyway!  Thanks for reading!

I've only played X2 #Reload, but Jam was my favorite in that game. Faust was cool too. I don't have any love for I-No after trying to beat her for hours on end during Arcade mode. She literally has unavoidable attacks that take at least 1/6 of your life bar when blocked. Yell

I have trouble beating a lot of the hard characters, especially the ones labelled as bosses.

Well you got a lot of characters there!  You could probably write your own blog about them, too!

SanAndreas

My mains are Millia, Sol, and (in X2) Testament.

I-No's name is pronounced E-No. She was named for rocker Brian Eno. Most of the Guilty Gear cast's names are from rock musicians or bands. Jam Kuradoberi is a Japanization of the Swedish band "Cloudberry Jam." May is named for Brian May of Queen, while Sol Badguy, whose real name is Frederick, is a reference to Queen's Freddie Murcury.

Bedman reminds me of a 1990s anime called Roujin-Z, which was about a robotic hospital bed.

Cary Woodham

01/13/2015 at 08:54 PM

I know that it's pronounced "E-No," but then my stupid joke wouldn't have worked.  You got to get your priorities straight on these blogs, ya know! :)  Stupid humor beats out correct pronounciation any day! :)

It doesn't surprise me that many of their names were based on rock stars.  Guilty Gear games have always had a 'rock n roll' vibe to them.  It's hard to describe, but you know what I mean.  Kind of reminds me how many of the Koopa Kids were named after punk rock stars.  Maybe they should be in the next Guilty Gear game!  Yeah!  Then they could start a band with I-No!  Aren't you glad I'm not designing video games? :)

That description of that robot bed anime sounds really familiar for some reason.

KnightDriver

Woa! That Roujin-Z is pretty weird. I watched some of it on youtube.

I'm going to have to look that up and see if that's an anime I watched in college sometime.  It sounds really familiar.
