There are only so many kinds of things and eventually everything falls into an established category (barring a game changer, of course). The physics puzzler on the App Store has proven very popular and a good fit for mobile, and Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage falls firmly in that category. It's similar to Cut the Rope but instead of trying to get a piece of candy into the mouth of an adorable monster, you're getting one or more Vikings into a little Viking barge (whatever those are called) with the power of slicing with your finger. While you do cut ropes sometimes, you mostly cut through giant blocks of ice, hence the name.

I've played through the tutorial and am partway through the first world and so far I like the game a lot. The puzzles are well thought out but short so far. You earn coins for completing the levels in as few swipes as possible and for getting treasure chests out of tricky spots and into the boat. You can use these coins to unlock extra levels on the world map. The game's website says there are over 140 levels, so this game should keep anyone busy for a while. (It also says there are epic boss fights but I haven't gotten to one of those yet.) The graphics are charmingly cartoony and the music is nice. I also like the game's sense of humor. It's put a big grin on my face more than once.

Overall Icebreaker is a cool little game. It's not real novel but is executed very well. I'll stick around at least long enough to see one of those epic boss fights and maybe longer than that. After all, who doesn't like Vikings?

Here is a review I found on youtube that summed it up well. I haven't seen some of this stuff in the game yet myself.

I remember playing this as a flash game way back when.  I had a blast, for the hour or two that I spent with it.

Cool. Didn't know it was that old.

Yeah, I think I played it as a flash game, too. And the boats are called longships. There's a really awesome museum in Oslo, Norway where they have three on display. They were archaeological finds at burial sites, and many of the grave goods are also on display. It was my favorite museum to go to when we'd go into Oslo for a day when I was a kid and lived in Norway for three years.

You lived in Norway for three years? That's cool. I had a roommate for a semester in college who was from Finland. A very odd fellow lol

I've never played The Lost Vikings but I always thought it looked like a fun game.

If you like Vikings, you should check out Volgarr the Viking. That game is awesome. It's really hard though and I don't know if they released it for the consoles. Undecided

I don't think that came out on consoles. I'm sure I would have heard of it in that case.
