BaD #3: Metroid Prime WiiU is Glorious!

I haven't played a Metroid game in quite a long time, and although I really enjoyed the first person 3D experience of the Prime series, I still really prefer the 2D games, but it isn't fair to compare as they are very different. If you haven't heard Nintendo put the whole Metroid Prime Trilogy on sale in the WiiU eShop for $10 dollars for a limitied time, except there is no support for the gamepad or controller other than Wiimote and Nunchuk. I spent a bit of time with the first game and after making a few adjustments for controls and display like making the HUD and helmet transparent and making the targeting a bit looser, the game is just glorious. I don't think I've ever played another game quite like it. I honestly feel like I've beamed down off the Enterprise and started exploring some wierd alien planet. I've already spent dozens of hours just exploring the planet and getting lost in the overworld. I love the way you can see your face reflected on the screen when there is a bright light on your face or the way the visor steams up when you pass through some weird air vents or water vapor from a waterfall. There is almost an Oculus Rift type feel to the whole experience and while the graphics are not HD, the world is stylized enough to make the envirnments look interesting. The soundtrack is super awesome too. So far I've only had a little snag with sensor bar during the first boss fight, but I was being careless and waving around too much. I'd say the game still holds up. I miss being lost and just wandering around alien planets and shooting all the things. Gamecube deserves more respect honestly. After Metroid Prime Series, Rogue Squadron, Resident Evil Remake and Resident Evil 4 it sure had a great little library of great games.

I love the Gamecube. I need to finish Metroid Prime on hard, I'm only missing that 1/4 of the game's gallery and then I'll have done every possible achievement.

Even the hints are a bit vague. Sometimes you still have to figure out 'how' to get to the point the map is telling you to go to.

That was a problem I had when I first played the first Prime game because I wasn't used to Metroid, but once I caught on to its exploration shtick it wasn't so bad.

But the 'figuring out how' to get from point A to point B is exactly how the 2D Metroids work and what ties the two together. The 3D games are considerably slowed down compared to the 2D games but they are intentionally designed to be that way-- they are more about exploring than running past everything.

I'm saying I had never played a Metroid at all before Prime, so I wasn't really used to that formula yet when I played it.

I'm not arguing. I'm just pointing out that Metroid Prime made the 2D formula work successfully in 3D.

I guess I misunderstood. I thought you were saying you didn't like how the hints were vague and I was just saying that bothered me only until I learned how Metroid games worked. Wasn't arguing either, just explaining myself.

Ad Wind Waker to that list of great Gamecube games. I never tried the original Prime games but I have the Trilogy disc and they are fantastic. I'd buy the Trilogy again but I don't really need to since I have a retail copy, maybe at some point. Glad you're enjoying the games, hope you enjoy Prime 3 since that one is my favorite from the Prime games.

Oh! Wind Waker is a no brainer. It is super awesome. I guess because I have it installed on my WiiU in HD I forgot it was a gamecube game.

I bought the Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii) physical copy this last weekend. I am one of those crazy collectors that must own a physical disc, lol. Plus where I live the internet is not that great. I got it for $35, so not too bad. I think the sale this weekend made the prices dip.

I'd love to have the disc, but I'm glad I got the whole thing for $10. I still have all the games on Gamecube and Wii, so I can always have a true retro experience.

I agree. It is glorious. When I'm at work all I think about is getting back home and playing it.

"but it isn't fair to compare as they are very different."

You're way ahead of 95% of the shitheels who open their yaps about video games. You know how sick I am of clueless kids arguing about whether RE4 or REmake, two competely different approaches to game design, is better for the series?

Ahem. Metroid Prime was the standout game of its generation to me.  I am tempted to say the "best," but since I already proclaimed how foolish it is to rank games that have little in common with each other, I'll settle by saying it's the most finely crafted. It also hasn't been surpassed as a sci-fi game since then, imo.

I think that Metroid Prime was overshadowed by the popularity of Halo on XBox.  They are both sci-fi FPS but Halo became a cultural phenomenon that propelled Xbox to success.

I bought this too today.  Hope to play it tomorrow.

I like the GameCube better than the Wii, which is sad since the Wii can play GC games.  I was on the fence on Metroid Prime at first, since I'm not into FPS style games, but I still liked the Prime games anyway.  Although Echoes got a little too hard sometimes.

Wow this game sounds really good. I have the FP Metroid game on the Wii and that threw me off a bit but Metroid is one of the titles that I feel should thrive in a first person game. Nintendo should remake the original game in First Person.

I definitely agree. The first game with the other two are some of the best games ever made, how the did a smooth transition from 2D and the 3D, inmersion factor and the exploration. I'm really glad I bought the trilogy on the Wii before the copies became rare.

Loved the Prime games. My son just played through the two GC games and is now playing the Wii game. We don't have a Wii U so we have to make do. :)

The entire Trilogy is great. I'm still glad I have the Limited edition in the steelbook case.

Ug, no classic controller support. I don't like the wiimote and nunchuck much. But, when I get a Wii-U, it'll be a no brainer to pick up the trilogy, on sale or not.

I love my GameCube. I have the first Metroid Prime game, and liked what little I played it before I got distracted by the next new shiny game. The GC had some pretty awesome exclusives and I don't think it got the love it deserved. I certainly liked it better than the original Xbox and it had a very comfortable, intuitive controller.

I have my gamecube games as well, but now I think they made it widescreen and the Wiimote controls makes it more immersive. I haven't had much problems with the remote sensor at all, except for when I panick and get all jumpy, but it's more my fault. It's not an HD upgrade but it still looks good and it's pretty fun.
