The Sega Genesis. The Genesis was the console my brother wanted for Christmas one year. I was in high school and at this point I really wasn’t into video games other than my Sega Game Gear and a regular Gameboy but I would play a game every so often. Anyways years later I took control of the Genesis and brought it to college because I had a lot of time between classes, which looking back I should have used to study but hey it was all about keeping busy before the everyone got internet crazy.

Bulls vs Lakers: Yeah this game was fun for its time. I don’t think I can go back and play it today. I started watching NBA Basketball right around the time the Bulls won their first title (WGN man, that channel sucks kids in). I borrowed a copy of this game from a friend and sometimes rented it from Blockbuster. Eternal Champions: My brother and I played the hell out of this game trying to pass it. The end boss is a dirty cheat. Some day I’ll fire it up again. I think this cart cost $75 at the time from Toys R Us. Steel Empire is an interesting Shoot’em Up that I found at a thrift store (I had a huge Genesis find at Goodwill one morning). Prime Time was an ok sports game. I think this is the one where you could move NFL teams, and I moved the Browns to Los Angeles. Aladdin was fun but I think I played more of it on the Game Gear.

Baseball Tonight was one of the first games I ever beat on the Genesis. I think it only had a playoff mode as well as other things like Home Run Derby. In HR Derby right after the red light blinked the ball would be pitched, and I would spend hours just hitting home runs. That Sonic game didn’t come with our Genesis. I think we got the Core set bought also got Mortal Kombat and Eternal Champions. Shaq-Fu is a game I wanted for a while but never got my hands on until a random encounter I think at a thrift store. Barkley Shut Up And Jam is a slower pace NBA Jam where you play a no rules 2 on 2 basketball game without all the crazy dunks. Street Fighter II. Yeah the SNES version was probably better but we were a Genesis House.

Golden Axe was fun. I think that was the first non fighting game we played on my brother’s Genesis.  The old school Madden games were interesting because it came with what felt like 300 page manual, along with all the Sega and EA stuff like warrenty cards, product catalog, and other paperwork. I bet a case of these early Madden games weighed a ton. Ecco The Dolphin. I never understood what the point of the game was. My younger cousin had the Genesis along with a copy of this game. We played because it wasn’t a fighting game.

We rented Streets of Rage 2 a couple of times and it was fun to play because it was co-op and my brother and I would try and take all the little weapons and health items to screw over each other. I think we played this game more than the original. College Football: I bought this at Target I think my Senior Year of High School. I was a football fan but never really played a college game and this one played exactly like Joe Montana. The best part was that this game included SDSU because of Marshall Faulk and Darnay Scott. I won some National Titles in this game. Road Rash was freaking awesome because it was such a new genre for us. Little bit of racing combined with fighting and sometimes trying to crash into a cow.

Sonic 2 is the first Sonic game I ever played, and it was on the Game Gear. I first played this version on my cousin’s Genesis. Still it’s a fun game. MK3 was good but I didn’t think it was as good as the first two MK games. X-Men we rented a couple times because we got into the X-Men cartoon and bought the trading cards and a couple of action figures. Cyberball was my favorite football game in the arcade pre-NFL Blitz. I thought it was cool that Joe Montana Football would say “Montana back to throw, Touchdown!” The Joe Montana ’94 game I sunk a lot of time into in college. After class before my friends and I would walk to the commons for dinner, I was either playing this or sleeping. Such a fun game.

NHLPA Hockey became a favorite especially after the announcement that Anaheim was going to get a hockey team. Before that I thought about rooting for the Kings but didn’t, but I did get caught up in Gretzky hype and how they didn’t win against Montreal in the Stanley Cup Finals. I think the next installment of NHL was the one used in the movie Swingers “You made Gretzky bleed.” Sunset Riders was this Streets of Rage like game except it was a western and one of the levels I think took place on a moving train. Altered Beast was one of those games I needed to buy because it was one of those Sega staples. My brother actually played through it, I didn’t care for it.

The next section of Genesis games are just cart only.

I found a cassette tape travel case from Goodwill and surprisingly Genesis carts fit so that is what I use for the non EA Giant carts. I buy the cart only games as place holders until I can find complete games which are getting harder and harder to find.

I think I played more of Sparkster the sequal to Rocket Knight than actual Rocket Knight. I might have got this game first which could be the reason. I love Kitana on MK II. I used to hustle Freshmen after high school at the local market that had a machine. We were a MK household. Primal Rage was one of those games I liked to play at the local arcade because it was different from other fighting games. I finally played through that game a couple of years ago. I think I’d be better if I actually knew some of the moves. I love Columns as much as I love Tetris. I could always sit down and play those two games. I wish I could find a complete Streets of Rage. My brother and I sunk a lot of time into that game.

The big carts are kept in a plastic tub that were made for shoes. I’d like to find the tennis game that controller ports on top of the cart for four player games.

Well Pixlbit there you go, these are my Genesis games. I am reading through your BaD blogs and I have to say its going to be fun because there is so much content. You guys/gals/little green men in space are awesome! I’m checking that out as well as following college football’s National Signing Day. Most of the Aztecs Class was already solid before today but we shall see if there are any surprises. Oh and this weekend I'm going to look for my missing NES carts in the back of the closet. If I find any random Genesis games I'll post later on.

That’s all for now, more tomorrow!

-Chris

I have a crapton of Genesis games.  Those I picked up from the local thrift shop, along with three different systems.

I could have used one of those giant Madden booklets when playing the new games. I'd prefer the training in those games to explain why I run certain things. I generally know what's going on, but it seemed up in the air whether I was able to get the ball off at all.

Then again I was playing with the 2013-14 Cowboys, so maybe that's why. I guess their O-line kinda sucked.

Golden Axe was The Shiiiiiiiit.  Loved that game.  Killed Death Adder a thousand times with my brother.

I'll tell you what my favorite game was. General Chaos. That was a fantastic Genesis game that I would try and beat my brother at. Also Landstalker! The greatest non Zelda that tried to be!

The Genesis was the first console I ever owned. My downsatirs neighbors had one and they'd invite me down to play every so often. I was working second shit in the warehouse at LL Bean at the time, and there was nothing on TV after I'd get home from work and all my friends were asleep, so I got the Genesis to give me something to do to wind down after work. I still have that console, and it still works. I also have most of my carts (some mysteriously vanished, we had a house guest with a drug problem and I think they may have pawned a bunch of my games for drug money).

I never had a Genesis as a kid (I was a SNES man, myself), so there were a lot of games on that system that I missed out on.  Luckily I got to play some good ones years later.  Some of my favorites include Ristar, Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 3, etc.

Cool! I love the Genesis. I was trying to track down The Tick game a few weeks ago. Jay Str. Video Games is going to text me if they get it in, but no luck yet.

How did you know I was a little green spaceman? I'm going to have a talk with mission control. This is NOT supposed to happen!
