After Rare was bought out by Microsoft the Donkey Kong games were left in a sort of strange situation.  And when it came to getting a proper Donkey Kong side scroller for the gamecube...well let's just say it didn't happen. Don't get me wrong I Love, absolutely love Jungle Beat...but it's not Donkey Kong Country. Nintendo decided to go venture into completely new territory, with a completely new developer in Paon. Together they developed three Donkey Kong titles: DK: King of Swing for the GBA, DK: Jungle Climber for the DS, and the unholy  cherry on top... Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast.

The biggest problem with Barrel Blast is that it was being developed for the Nintendo Gamecube and utilized the DK Bongos. There are three titles that used this control scheme. Donkey Konga, Donkey Konga 2, and Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. Now when the Wii was announced a lot of let development titles were pushed towards being developed for the Nintendo Wii as well. Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, and Donkey Kong Barrel Blast were 3 such titles. While the first 2 didn't suffer majorly from the change...Barrel Blast completely discarded the notion of fun controls.

And that's why this game sucks. The controls for a racing game....require you to flail a motion device in your hand. To accelerate, the player must shake the Wii Remote and Nunchuk alternatively, lift them simultaneously to jump and use the motion sensor to beat rivals and obstacles and using items, while the character will be guided by the route of the tracks, including curves of automatic. Players can learn to race at Cranky's flight school where Cranky gives 8 lessons on how to play the game, acceleration, use of elements and Wild Move.

Imagine if you will, Mario Kart using this hair brained scheme...What fun would that be? I'll tell you...None, nada, zip, zilch, zero. I understand that starting from scrap would not have been the same, b ut having to do what you do in Barrel Blast is an exercise in torture so unholy I can't begin to describe.

You see these tracks? They look fun right? It definitely looks like a decent racer. It has a a grand prix like Mario Kart, ghost trials like Mario Kart, multiplayer and crazy items and such like Mario Kart...But it misses that online component. It misses that craziness Mario Kart has and often you'll find races mundane, repetitive, and boring, and most importantly BB forgets that a game needs a good freaking control scheme!!!!!!!!!!! GAHHHHHHHH I HATE THIS GAME!

Barrel Blast could have easily been a blast to play...instead it blasts out crap. It's boring, not fun, and completely uncontrollable. Stay far, far away from this racer.

Score: 3/10- If you are a fan of on rails racing you can't really control and boring gameplay...Barrel Blast is for you

So what is next for me to despise?

You know what on second thought...I might play Barrel Blast again.

Sounds like it could have been decent with a Gamecube controller.

or even just a regular control scheme for the classic controller! It baffles me why they did it that way.

Yep, controls can ruin any game. Too bad. Bring on George of the Jungle. I want to watch out for that tree.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is one of my top favorite DK games ever.  It was so brilliant.

The DK climing games on the GBA and DS were not that bad.  Kind of reminded me of Crazy Climber.

I think I reviewed Barrel Blast when it came out.  Such an awful game, one of the worst Nintendo first party games I've ever played.  The controls were so awful I couldn't get past the first set of tracks. I can't help but wonder if it would've been better with the bongo controllers, but I don't know.  Yeah the Wii had a weird transitiion there with games that were really meant to be on the GameCube.

I am with you Cary. The bongos would have made it so much better and Jungle Beat was amazing!

I do agree it's not a very good game, but I consider the game more bland than outright terrible. It just didn't inspire me that much to continue playing it.
