Windows 10 - Good or BaD

I've installed Windows 10 as a virtual machine on my Windows 8.1 laptop because I'm curious to see what they've done.

For a start they've put back a Start menu that doesn't whisk you away to a completely different interface. That was the reason we deployed Classic Shell on all the Windows 8.1 machines we have at the board, so that people could click on the Window Icon in the lower left of the desktop and get a conventional Windows 7/XP style Start menu instead of the Metro interface that is pretty much useless unless you have a touch screen.

Instead of going back to the Windows 7 skinny start menu Windows 10 gives us a hybrid. Part regular start menu and part Metro interface. You can leave it as is or expand it to full screen. This is what it looks like.

Windows 10 desktop

Well it's kind of like an old style menu but a lot wider and it has all the lovely Metro icons on it. If you click that symbol in the top right corner it goes full screen on you.

At the moment I'm not sure where you find legacy programs but I've only just started looking at it so I'll tell you more later. I'll be trying to run a couple of games on it but keep in mind that I've only given the VM 3 GB of memory to work with and 1 GB is reserved for video. Therefore they will be old games.

I may actually take my older non-touch screen laptop and make it a straight up Wndows 10 machine. We'll see if I get that brave.

See you tomorrow Pixlbitallion.

I distinctly asked for a private room. This hotel sucks.

It works for tablets, is ok on touch screen pcs but completely out to lunch for a non-touch environment.

I just checked out legacy of kain soul reaver on the image and it seems to run ok.

i've never used a Windows tablet.  I'd like to get an android device, and there's a Nvidia Shield tablet that's cool, but I might wait a while on that.

I like all the games and apps on iPad.  That's what attracts me the most.  I don't use the internet a ton on a tablet unless I'm travelling.  But I like playing rpg's and recording music on the iPad.

I didn't know Windows 10 was out yet. I made sure to avoid Windows 8 like the plague when I bought my new PC. I don't regret that either.

It isn't really I'm running the preview courtesy of work. When it does come out it will be a free upgrade from 7 and 8. I'll kinda be forced to use is for learning purposes.

Metro might be ok for touch screens, but I still hate the look of it.

Yep, it's not that elegant. :)

Never knew they released it so early.

I'm not into the Metro interface, which is why I asked before I got my laptop to not start it up over there everytime I turn it on.

Yep, to accomplish that you right click on the task bar, choose Properties>Navigation and check the box that says "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen go to the desktop instead of Start"

There are a lot of simple tricks like that to make Windows 8 work like 7.

I've been using Windows 8 on my laptop for the past few months; I really hated that App menu.

I think I'll be sticking to Windows 7 for the time being, with my luck the way it is I don't want to risk something weird happening.

Considering upgrading my win 7 64 bit laptop to win 10, but I have to backup everything first in case of trouble. I have to find time for that first.
