Vice City is still super awesome! BaD#13
I made a blog a while back ago about 'defense of mundanity' or games with design built around repetition that can be fun. There are plenty of contemporary games that do this like Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, MOBAs, MMOs, Diablo 3, Shooters, etc.
Let's not get carried away here and try to define 'repetative' because by nature most games expect us to play them endlessly, but there are some games that essentially require repetition in order to overcome them. The recent Majoras Mask comes to mind and possibly Monster Hunter, for grinding purposes.
Anyway. I don't particularly like GTA games. I don't love them like most people except for maybe 2 or 3. Vice City, San Andreas and maybe III and because of the open world design and vehicle chases the game pretty much requires you to familiarize yourself with the layout of the streets and landmarks through repetition, although there is always a map available. The music in Vice City is super awesome even if it's 80s tunes can stand alone on their own. I just didn't love GTA4 or have any interest in 5 after PS2 entries which were great standalone adventures. I don't get bored doing quests riding around the same streets over and over and I quite enjoy the story as well.
I bought the game on PSN and it's pretty much similar to the PS2 version, not in HD, so you could probably get the same experience if you just rolled out PS2 system and find the disc somewhere online for like $5.
I though the game deserved some late praise and I would love to see remakes of the PS2 games.
Community, any thoughts on Vice City?
