I've been busy playing Tales of Xillia 2 lately. I have no idea how far into the game I am, nor do I really care. I'm having fun and enjoying myself.

ToX 2 is a true sequel, it tales place a year after the ending of the previous game, and uses many of the previous characters from that game, as well. They even have the same abilities as the in the first game, which is nice. It also uses most of the same locations as in the first game, which does feel a little recycled, but more credible, being a sequel set in the same world.

I'm not going to go into the story, anyone really interested can google that part. I'm just going to talk about my impressions, things I like, things I don't like, and stuff like that.

In the category of “I like this”:

  • The return of characters from the first game, and the slight changes that have happened to them in the year since the events of the first game.

  • The playable characters from the first game have the same abilities in this one.

  • The Kitty Dispatch system. Early in the game, you take on a job for a crazy cat lady who has lost her 100 cats. You have to find them, they're hidden all over the place. Once you've found a cat in a particular area, it opens that area up for “Kitty Dispatch”, where you send out your cat Rollo (an npc) to find rare items and more of the missing cats. Many of the job requests you need to fulfill have items that can only be gotten this way. The more cats you find, the better the loot Rollo comes back with.

  • The story. I'm busy doing a lot of the side quests and haven't really delved into the main story too much, but I am curious as to what's going on with the main character's brother and how one other character fits in and whether the person I have pegged as being the real villain does in fact turn out to be.

  • Transformation. Ludger, the main character, can transform kind of like Yuri from the Shadow Hearts games.

Stuff I'm not so keen on:

  • The little girl who is a main character in the story but isn't playable. She's an obnoxious spoiled brat that I'd like to toss down the nearest well. And her voice is that horrible fake little girl voice acting that grates on me after about two seconds. In real life, she'd be one of those spoiled kids whose parents don't believe in discipline and have tantrums when they don't get what they want.

  • The fact that the game doesn't come with a manual. The combat is so complex that in-game tutorials really aren't enough. And half the time, the tutorials don't cover the special moves well enough that I can figure out how they work.

  • Debt. At the beginning of the story, you end up 20 million in debt and I'm spending most of my time and resources paying that off. It's hard enough to save up early in the game for decent gear and enough healing items to keep from dying too often without the obviously contrived debt and annoying loan officer girl bugging you to pay up every time you manage to save enough to buy better gear.

The rest:

  • Like I mentioned earlier, combat in Tales games is, I feel, needlessly complex, They just keep adding more and more, and I can never figure out how to do anything more than just button mash and hope for the best. I know I'm not the only one with this problem, because Peter has mentioned it before, too. When I do pull off a combo or a chain, I never have any clue how I did it so I can replicate that action with any reliability. I could probably find something somewhere on the internet to explain it, but it feels too much like work.

  • As far as I can tell, the “d” in Ludger's name is silent. So why they didn't just call him Luger is beyond me.

  • Maps. When you find a cat, a paw print appears where you found it. Seems kind of useless to me, I mean, I've already found it, why do I care now?

There's probably more, but I usually think of this stuff when I'm playing and I can't be bothered to stop and scribble it down.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is, I'm really enjoying the game. I might actually finish before I go back to work at the park in 37 days, but it is a JRPG and they do tend to go on for a while.

Oh good, your blog is back. I clicked on the first link and it wasn't there. Then this one showed up and it works. Yay!

I still need to finish up Vesperia and start the first Xillia before I get to this one.Vesperia was orphaned by the return of my PS3. I wonder if I even remember any of the moves because that was last September.

Yeah, I deleted the initial post, it had some serious formatting issues and it was easier to trash it and start over than to find the problems and fix them.

I'd say skip Vesperia and just move on to Xillia. I had a hard time getting interested in Vesperia for some reason and it sits, unplayed except for maybe the first 30 minutes, on my shelf collecting dust. Had a hard time putting Xillia down.

I'm about 75% done Vesperia so that's why I want to finish it. It actually gets much better once you get farther in.

I'll give it another try later, then. I'll have to start over, though, because I don't remember much.

I'm gonna play Tales of the Abyss soon, but I think I'm gonna do the future part of Graces first.  I feel like being with those characters again... if my PS3 can read the disc.

I wasn't crazy about Xillia, so I might save myself for Zestiria.

I should go back and finish the future part in Graces myself. And what didn't you like about Xillia? Also how far did you get?

I probably got about four hours in.  I mean, there's things I did like about it like the field areas this time, which I thought were more fun to explore than Graces.  But I wasn't really crazy about the characters.  I dunno, maybe I'll give it another shot.

Much like Peter and his reply to me about Vesperia, Xillia gets better as you go along. Give it another try some time when you're in the mood for a long rpg.

Graces was really amazing. I love the story in the game. I have Xillia but haven't got around to finishing it. The current gen has pulled me away from last gen but I might eventually get around to go back to finishing it up.

I was shocked to discover that DS games come with manuals. Those things are becoming increasingly more and more rare. The only Tales game I played was Tales of the Abyss and not for long. The combat did seem overly complicated though.

And Tales of the Abyss came along before they added even more stuff! Like I said, I just mash buttons and hope something magical and amazing happens. I've managed to finish a bunch of Tales games without having mastered the complexities of the combat system, so it hasn't really affected my enjoyment of the game all that much.

So you say my favorite character would be a little girl with a sock puppet monster?  HMMMMM!

I'm just giving you a hard time. :)

Have you ever played Tales of Legendia on the PS2?  That's my favorite Tales game.

Yep, that's what I'm saying, lol.

Yes, I've played Tales of Legendia. I liked it a lot. And the battle system wasn't incredibly complex and I could pull off special maneuvers.

And the music in Legendia was fantastic (Yay Go Shiina), and I loved the characters, especially Grune.  Go Shiina is doing the music for Tales of Zestria supposedly, so I'm looking forward to that.

Finding the cats sounds fun. I gotta learn fishing so a cat can have a trout in Fantasy Life. Things we do for cats. Sheesh!

We are here to serve them, apparently. Or at least my cat thinks so.

I want to write a scifi about cats in space secretly controlling all we think and do. Who are the pets? WE ARE!

Servents. We don't even get pet status.

Boy, cats are even more malevolent than I thought.

I'll have to go back and finish Xillia 2 someday.  (I'm deep into ps4 land now.)  As for the little girls voice, she drives me nuts because all I hear is Chopper from One Piece.  (Sorry, now you will too.)  The combat in Xillia is at least easier to get a grip on than Graces was.  I played about 20 hours of Graces before it all clicked in my head. Just remember, you're assigning the attacks to the buttons you want, the key is remembering which weakness is on which button and spamming it.  Although weapon switching makes it super easy to hit weaknesses.

The secret to the debt thing is spend the money.  If your over the amount she wants she'll call every time you change locations.  Keep the money below that amount and it won't trigger.  I call it the games way of saying 'stop hording ther money.'
