BaD XVI: Moving Pictures

For the mostpart, the Oscars was pretty dry last night, but I did like NPH as a host better than Ellen. I liked most of the musical performances too, especially "Glory," "Everything is Awesome" and that surprisingly good Julie Andrews tribute Lady Gaga did.

Also very surprising to me was Birdman taking home Best Picture. It's been top of my list for movies to watch for a while now, but it did not at all look like something the Academy would go for. I mean it looked like it had humor in it, for Chrissakes! Then the director won and it won for best cinematography and original screenplay and I was pretty surprised. Will be renting that on red Box soon.

You folks in the north will be happy to hear that Texas finally has gotten some of your shitty weather. Of course, it's not as bad, but I do need to watch it driving on what will possibly be icy roads here in Nacogdoches when I go home and then come back up to meet with the running club. If they decide to go outside this time, I might not follow them. Cold is one thing, ice on ass is another.

Meanwhile, my parents are in Dallas where stuff is actually shut down due to weather. They're expecting icy conditions and other crap that will be unsafe to drive in, at least by southern standards, so my mom has asked what's good on Netflix.

Hope you all are doing well.

Birdman winning didn't surprise me at all since from what I heard it's about an actor realizing he may have peaked and trying to prove he still matters. That plays right into the people voting's fears so even if it is that good, it's another one of those esoteric winners

I just thought Grand Budapest or maybe The Imitation Game would be more the Academy's stule, even despite the actor narrative. I'm looking forward to seeing how well they pulled off the continous shot editing.

I avoid awards shows like the plague and the Oscars is no exception. In the end they don't seem to have anything to do with the movies, TV shows or music and a lot to do with what the actors or musicians are wearing and who they came with.

I wouldn't mind hearing the Gaga performance. I'm not a fan but I saw her perform on SNL with just her on piano and vocal and realized she is capable of more than the product she churns out for the masses.

I'd say the Oscars, besides the red carpet ceremony, are a bit of an exception. The awards go to what film nerds would like as opposed to simply what's popular (Grammys, aside from sometimes like that Beck win).

And Gaga's a classically trained Juliard musician, so that didn't surprise me. I actually like her pop songs too, just sometimes am not in the mood for the videos.

I had to miss the Oscars like last year, only that this time it was pure studying for collegue instead of time difference. Odly enough, I had to watch a movie for today and it was Oscar nominated Moneyball.

Anyway, i'm pretty interested in Birdman and they are actually screening that where I live. I might check it one of these days and I think many Latin Americans are happy because Gonzales Iñarritu won both movie and director. I did kinda wish they gave more recognition to Boyhood or atleast the director award to Linklater because man, that one atleast deserves something for just the ambition of a project like that and succeding at it. Of course, you would disagree....

I wouldn't have minded him winning best director and I wasn't mad about Patricia Arquette's Oscar. I just don't like the second half of that movie. I really wanted to like it.

Moneyball is a good one. Dry as hell, but I've always been fascinated by the process of drafting players.

I didn't watch the Oscars.  I have bad taste in movies, so most of the movies I like don't even get awards.  And since I'm lazy, tell me which movies won the best animated film, and best animated short.  And someone told me that some old Japanese animator got some kind of recognition.  Was it Miyazaki?

Yeah the ice is pretty bad where i'm in near Dallas.  But I sitll had to go to work today.  Yuck.  Not looking forward to tomorrow either.

Yes, it was Miyazaki. Best Animated was Big hero 6 and Best short was Feast.

And my parents are probably happy they live in Dallas right about now. They would never get off in Wisconsin for similar conditions.

I liked Big Hero 6, but it was just one big long 2 hour Saturday morning cartoon.  I guess it didn't have much competition.  How to Train Your Dragon 2 was pretty good, though.

That was part of its competition. And Lego Movie was not nominated.

That's too bad, as the LEGO Movie was great.  Looks like I'm going to have to make my own movie award show.

I've been meaning to watch Birdman. I've been meaning to watch Tim Burton's old Batman movie again too. It'd be a nice change of pace from the 60s Batman. I don't watch the Oscars. For the most part, I don't keep up with shit lol. Sealed

I've kept up with less and less as I've gotten older. I used to seek stuff out like a hipster at a garage sale, but now I just don't have the energy or time. You want me to look at something, I better already be interested or you better be sellin', but don't get annoying about it.

Kind of been wanting to watch Birdman, maybe I'll give it a shot if it hits one of the premium channels or something.

I'll just rent it. Honestly cheaper that way.
