The truth behind the gold Apple watch

The ultimate proof that Apple builds fashion accessories and bling first. Technology is an after thought. Apple's counting on the fact that having too much money doesn't necessarily mean you're smart.

I think anybody who spends that much on a watch is lame -- but Apple didn't invent uselessly expensive watches.  People have been wearing rolexes for years.  I mean, I guess people should do what they want.  But that's just something that's always annoyed me, spending so much money on a piece of jewelry.

You know me, I like Apple products. But I'm gonna wait on the whole watch thing.  But, I do believe it will eventually be a successful product and other companies will follow suit.

That's just it though, other companies already have similar products. I know Samsung has been flogging theirs for a couple of years now.

yes, I know, but eventually with the apps they'll have, Apple will put out uses for the watch that others will copy, kind of like how every phone now has a talking woman like Siri.

and there is another one of their stupid fad ideas. If my Note 4 does that I have no idea because it's a feature with no practical application for me. It may have been suitable for impressing one's friends for 5 minutes but not any longer.

If I want to see if someone has sent me an email or called me I can pull out my phone.

The functionality of these devices is redundant and as I said little more than a fashion accessory.

I can't see this stuff going very far at all unless it's the landfill in a couple of years. You'll be able to pick up thousands of them for nothing there once our disposable society gets bored with them.

yeah I don't use Siri or crap like that, but that's the future, AI thingies (if video games have taught me anything).  Of course, they might try to kill us, but in the case they don't, that sort of thing could be helpful.  Tongue Out

I love my iPad.  I love that I can play RPG's, record multitrack music, use emulations of classic synths, navigate the road when we're in our motorhome...  The functionality is great.

The one thing I think though that Apple has right is the Apple Pay, which works with the new watches and their new phones.  Eventually, that's how we're going to pay for stuff, with our mobile computers, not plastic, and Apple has the leg up on that.  Obviously it has its advantages and disadvantages, your money and your discount cards etc.  will all be part of your phone.

Of course fifty years from now, we will be installing these features straight into our flesh.  Hopefully, me and you won't have to experience that cyberpunk shit.

LOL. I still pay cash for most of my purchases.

When it comes to payments, I'm something of a Luddite. Not a fan of allowing the people I do business with to have their hands in my cookie jar, which is what digital payments often amount to. On the rare occasions I buy from Amazon I do so with prepaid cards.

Crooks will have a field day. If you have all that financial info on your phone and an airhead password like 1234 the person who steals your phone steals your life.

On top of that devices that can attach to your phone and download all that information will start popping up like dandelions in spring time.

yes, but the phone will have biometric devices in them like apple's fingerprint scanner, so only you will be able to use it, #1.  Apple watches in the future might read your DNA before allowing a transaction.  is this a perfect solution? Um no.  Is there such thing?

sure, anything is hackable.  but someone can hit you over your head and steal your cash more easily.

The future may be imperfect, but that's just the nature of reality.

I'm a Luddite. I don't want my stuff talking to me, I don't need a watch that does anything other than tell time, and my phone only needs to make calls. I have a map, so I don't need GPS devices. Now you kids can take your fancy talking watches and get off my lawn!

Meh. I don't really see the need for a smartwatch myself, can't imagine any use they might have that my iPhone doesn't cover.

But when you get right down to things, you don't really need clothes that don't come off the shelf at Walmart for a few bucks instead of several-thousand-dollar suits from Giorgio Armani or other European designers, you don't need $200 Nikes instead of $20 Walmart shoes in most cases, a cheap Korean or Indian car that has anything more than four wheels and an engine instead of a luxury car boasting "German engineering"... or some crappy little Chinese cell phone, for that matter.

Fashion has always been about branding, both from the companies making a case that their name is worth a lot of money, as well as from consumers who want (or need; in some social/career circles you need to dress for success) that kind of branding to be taken seriously in their social circles.

I haven't worn a watch since High School.

I used to wear a watch everyday but not anymore. It actually bothers me to have a watch on my wrist.

I want that watch in Goldeneye with the laser. I'd wear that.

At first I wanted an Apple Watch because I wanted to talk to something on my wrist but I just don't wear watches. Even when I tried to, I would still pull out my phone. I like the concept of the smart watch and I think there is a market, but for the gold Apple Watch I put it in the same category as the all gold Lamborgini smart phone, or the jewel encrusted iPods as items for folks who have way too much money to blow on random items.

Even if the Apple Watch sounds like a good idea, I'd rather put that 300 bucks towards more storage on my next iPhone.
