I've been looking forward to this game for a while, but I had to put it down and buy it later on cause I bought something else with that money. I do like the character designs and I haven't really played a fighting game with anime-styled graphics, so I'm looking forward to it when I get it.
The Fighters of Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late

Recently I reviewed a one-on-one 2-D fighting game called Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late. That’s a really long name! When I first started playing it, I thought the characters weren’t that interesting, because they all looked like typical anime stereotypes. But as I kept playing, some of the characters ended up being a little more interesting than I thought. And since I sometimes like to write about fighting game characters in blogs, I’ll do just that with this game right now. Plus I don’t have any other blog ideas anyway.
While this game doesn’t have quite as interesting characters as BlazBlue or is as visually stunning as the last Guilty Gear game I reviewed, I do have to say that this new game feels more accessible to fighting game novices. I won’t go into the storyline, though, because it’s just a convoluted anime-style plot. And you know I don’t like those. Anyway, let’s take a look at the characters from my point of view. Hold on to your hats!
Hyde
I guess he’s the main character of the game. Just a typical anime teen with a suit and tie school uniform who has Yu-Gi-Oh hair. Why are main characters in most fighting games the most boring ones?
Waldstein
He’s a big strong old guy who fights with Hsien-Ko claw arm things. I like him, he’s cool. He is pretty slow, but has a long reach.
Orie
She’s a blue-haired lady with a maid-like outfit and fights with a long fencing sword. She acts like a heroic type of person, so that’s cool.
Merkava
This one is kind of cool even though I think he’s a bad guy. He looks kind of like a half robot, half monster. He has blue fiery hair and a robot voice. Like Waldstein, he is really slow but has a strong reach. When he defeats enemies, he picks them up and flies away with them! Uh oh!
Seth
He’s just as boring as Hyde. Another anime teen dude with an outfit that covers his mouth and he fights with two knife things.
Hilda
I think she’s the main evil bad lady in the game. Most of the characters fight her last in arcade mode, at least. She has blonde hair and wears a suit that’s half white and half black. Kind of reminds me of Two-Face or Cruella de Vil. She also does that stereotypical anime female villain “Oh ho ho ho” laugh. When you play as her, she has to talk to everyone before a fight in arcade mode, which is exhausting. She fights with these floating black sword things, which are most effective if you keep your distance while playing as her.
Nanase
Just your typical anime schoolgirl with orange pigtails. She hefts a big sword and uses tornados to fight and has wings on her shoes. Yup, just your typical schoolgirl.
Eltnum
One of my favorite female characters in the game, she’s a purple haired lady with a Cammy-like hat, and uses a whip yo-yo thing and a gun to fight. She keeps breaking the fourth wall and says she’s from another fighting game called Melty Blood. Never played that one, but I have heard the name somewhere before.
Linne
I think she’s one of the main characters in the game. Just a little girl who dresses like Velma from Scooby Doo. But the most notable thing about her is that she has this pet flying creature that looks like a Mew with long ears tailing her. But nobody in the game seems to acknowledge that it’s even there! But that’s the first thing I noticed! Well, OK, someone did mention it in one of their endings. Apparently its name is Kuu. But that’s the only thing I know about it.
Carmine
He’s a really mean looking guy with long red hair and uses red spikes when he fights. He has scary red eyes and a mean wide grin.
Gordeau
Just a guy who wears a jacket and no shirt, and uses a big scythe to fight.
Vatista
She’s a girl wearing a Lolita dress, and her hair looks like a little halo on top. She has these mechanical looking hologram angel wings that she uses to fight with, and says she’s an ancient artificial life form.
Yuzuriha
She wears a Japanese robe over her shoulders and uses a giant samurai sword. But she also wears a tube top and skinny jeans and is obsessed with her cell phone. But she’s also kind of silly, so I like her.
Chaos
Nerdy guy with glasses and he’s always holding an open book, even when he fights. He has a pet that looks like the evolved version of Totodile, though. I wish you could play as that creature; he seems more interesting than the guy.
Byakima
He’s just a purple headed guy who hangs out with a purple haired girl who he says is his sister. And he uses spider claw things on his back to fight. A lot of characters in this game have purple hair. I hear in Japan the color purple represents evil, so maybe that’s why so many wear that color in this game to match the dark tone of the story. Wario and Waluigi wear purple, too, so I guess that makes sense.
Akatsuki
And finally is this guy, who also has purple hair and wears a white lab coat kind of uniform and carries a briefcase. He uses electric attacks and says he’s from WWII and just went into hibernation for a long time.
Conclusions
And those are all the characters! Let me know if you’ve played this game and which characters you like. And fill me in on any missing details. Although I doubt very many people reading this have played the game, but oh well. That’s all for now! Later! --Cary
